    The Devonshire Arms

    The Devonshire Arms

I came to eat here last week with my boyfriend and his family. I was especially looking forward to…read morecoming here as it had won Restaurant of the Year 2011 by Eat Sheffield! The drive to the restaurant was lovely and scenic, going down dark and winding country roads until suddenly we drive around a corner and The Devonshire Arms appeared! We'd got there a little early and we sat down by the bar for some drinks. The menu was displayed on a chalkboard by the seating area and it all looked yummy! The dining area was quite small but very nice and cosy. The kitchen was open and you could see the chefs chopping and cooking away which I quite liked. I chose the rabbit and pheasant terrine with grape chutney as my starter; it came with onion bread and the slice of terrine was huge! I really wanted to finish it, but I couldn't as there was no way I'd be have enough room for my main! For the main, I had venison steak served with new potatoes (usually served with mash which I couldn't have as it had milk/cream in it) and braised red cabbage. The steak was pink and cooked to perfection and the red cabbage was sweet but with a little tart edge to it. I didn't have a dessert but the rest of the party did - my boyfriend had a deconstructed banana cheesecake and his sister had a brownie (I overheard her saying it was the best brownie she'd ever tasted!). All of the staff were really nice, especially the lady who served us that night, she was really lovely and very attentive. The Devonshire Arms fully deserves it's awards and hope it gets more in the future. If you're ever around the Sheffield area and want to venture out of the city centre for some food make sure you come here. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect meal.

Beginning with a glass of wine outside overlooking the river, the evening started out brilliantly (the English term, I think, for INCREDIBLE). Corinne was warm, welcoming, and hospitable The Scallops dish, as a starter, was creatively designed, and - while not overly complex and varied - SPECTACULARLY executed. The crispy smokey outside with soft and juicy interior of the scallops couldn't have been better. Oh. Then the Veal Main. HOLY WOW... Nuanced yet rich. Perfectly cooked mid rare loin, dressed with a complex yet subtle combination of Braised cherry tomatoes, Broad Beans, Broccoli Rabe is perfected by the rich and flavorful jus touched with an essence of mint. The perfectly crispy fried, lightly curried onion Bahji adds a perfectly complementary crispy texture and subtle onion sweetness that would be greatly missed in its absence. I am embarrassed to admit, that the Hazelnut herb crumb lightly dusted over the top - while a brilliant design addition - was too subtle for MY palate. Those of you with a more refined palate will be fortunate to enjoy more than I this finer nuanced component. This dish might be the very best designed veal dish I have ever experienced... and... executed BRILLIANTLY. Friendly staff, luxuriant surroundings and décor, also add to the experience. There are comfy sofas and leather chairs in the lounge area, or more traditional tables in the 'snug', which is where we mainly dine; whereas the more formal dining area, has that little bit of elegance for that special occasion. Having been through many incarnations since my original review, it was time for an update. The lunch/lounge menu, consists of dishes like hot and cold sandwiches, with the accompanying sides of dressed salad and the Blenheim's legendary chips, so tasty!; They also do pizzas, themed on cities around the world like Roma, Parma, New Delhi and of course, Derby! There are other dishes like burgers, hot and cold meze platters and the fish of the day. The burger was strangely underwhelming, but the Sea Bream, Salmon or Sea Bass when they are on, are definitely stand out dishes, a perfect balance of flavours. The Blenheim is on the pricey side, but the food on the whole is excellent, a great place to wile away a few hours, in comfortable surroundings.

Here, even though they were getting ready for a 200 person bash - they were friendly and accomodating, even setting a table for us despite our only wanting a bar snack. 5 stars for that! The food was ok - I have a feeling it's actually much better, but I'm letting them off because they were obviously very busy! We were also able to finish our work in the bar; we weren't rushed and didn't feel pressured to go; even the tables being carried past us! xx
