We called ahead and ordered "to go". Mrs G had the egg-fried rice and rates this as the best that she has had in the UK. I had lamb vindaloo (dumb old me me!) it was hot and spicy (I have had so many disappointing experiences from local Indian restaurants that I was seeking flavor! The menu is huge and everything I have ever tried has been great. Favourites include fish cakes, sweetcorn cakes and chicken satay for starters (they also do a Thai platter for two or more to share, which would be a great introduction for people unfamilar to Thai cuisine). For the main course the green curry is to die for! Prices are quite reasonable (about £6/£7 for a main course). Set menus are also available. Staff are really friendly. The decor is fairly traditional and not really my cup of tea, although the chairs are very comfortable! If you fancy somewhere more modern the same people also run a Thai restaurant in Quorn in Leicestershire which is much more funky, modern and upmarket - although that's also reflected in the prices. I cannot rate this place highly enough - it's worth going for the free prawn and spicy rice crackers alone!

It is a popular lunchtime venue, particularly with local business people during the week. In the evening Zamani's has a more expansive menu, with no fixed prices. There are always interesting daily specials to compliment the menu like Venison Pie or Roast Duck, to name but a few. The main menu has numerous pasta, pizza and seafood dishes, with most dishes having the option of starter or main meal sizes. The meals are full of flavour, even for basic dishes like carbonara, a real treat for the tastebuds! Desserts range from the traditional Tiramisu, to lemon tortes and profiteroles, rounded off by a good strong cup of coffee. The staff are enthusiastic and friendly, and the whole restaurant has very relaxed feel, tastefully decorated with stunning wildlife prints. Mrs G enjoyed the small portion of fish served with a few vegetables (small potatoes and small tomatoes as we recall) and mine was a rather mediocre lasagne. One thing we had in common - after eating our meals we were still starving hungry. I suspect that portion sizes have shrunk somewhat compared with our previous experience with other "Ask" diners (which perhaps explains why the restaurant was so empty lunchtime on a Saturday).

As the name suggests, it has an extensive cellar and it takes as long (if not indeed much longer) to choose the wine as it does to choose the meal. The owner is very knowledgable and friendly, making the choice a little easier. Upstairs there is a sitting room where you can take your drink while you wait for your table, so getting there a bit early is no problem. It also has a large whisky shop up there with the finest assortment of malts (and the odd brandy) this side of... ummm... Oh I dunno, somewhere that sells a lot of whisky. This isn't the usual supermarket chioce either. While you'll find a few bottles that you would recognise off the shelves of your local CostLo, the range at La Zouch is more what you would expect from a good whisky shop and contains some pretty fine drams. It's not as extensive as some I have been in, but it's probably similar to the whisky shop in York, for example. Back down in the restaurant, the food is well cooked and well presented. I've been a few times and have yet to have anything to complain about. The service is always pleasant and the price is pretty reasonable. My only gripe with this place, and the reason it hasn't hit the dizzy heights of 5 stars, is that they never seem to change the menu. I must admit I haven't been for a while now, but the a La Carte menu is still the same now as it was 4 years ago when I first went. If you happen to be visiting the bustling busy business district of Ashby de la Zouch and fancy a power lunch with some high flying clients, then La Zouch is a great place to visit, although you'll soon get bored of the food choice, which, considering the baffling choice of drinks, lets this place down. This would be a wonderful place to sit in the summer because it is a bit a sun trap. The courtyard is fairly large and the walls are adorned with old food signs like Brooke Bond tea. Inside the spacious nature continues, with tables of varying sizes, both upstairs and downstairs; it never feels cramped like some cafes can feel. Menu wise, very comprehensive, from breakfasts to lunches and more formal dinners. Prices seem initially on the high side for the food, but when you see what you get for your money, you'll see why. We've only dined there for breakfast, and are yet to try the delightful cakes on offer or the tempting looking lunches. However, the breakfasts fare is very impressive, from a full English Breakfast, to generous sausage and egg cobs, to my personal favourite - the scrambled eggs on toast. Too often scrambled eggs can be tasteless, but at the Courtyard Cafe they are a real triumph, full of flavour and a portion to fit even the heartiest of appetites.
