While walking around Boston's Chinatown, I stumbled upon a small store located a basement hidden…read morebelow the many fabulous restaurants that most people come to Chinatown for. I lucky spotted a door open at the bottom of a long set of stairs. To my surprise there were people hustling and bustling below. I also saw a bunch of boxes and decided to take a quick closer peek at what was going on below street level. I ventured down a few steps and to my surprise saw a full blown old fashion Asian Apothecary store complete with an older woman behind a counter mixing multiple herbs and dried roots and wrapping them in brown paper. The store was impressive with the high quality of the Apothecary here, from ginseng roots and extracts to 50 lb bags of miscellaneous dried mushrooms to lotus flowers etc. I purchased some Korean Ginseng Tea at a very reasonable price. This is a great find, next time I will inquire if they have any Goji Berry products or Lingzhi Mushrooms which are somewhat difficult finds. I give Kok Wa Co a Solid 4 Stars. I may have gone up to 5 if I could have communicated with them.

We were able to find everything we needed, aside for some ginger, which they only had huge portions packaged off. We only needed a small piece, so we will find that elsewhere. Otherwise, there were pretty cool selection of goodies and unique finds in the freezer section. When checking out, there was a pretty rowdy group of kids yelling and running around (no, their parents didn't bat an eye) and inevitably was swinging a pack of glass drinks and some flew out and exploded as they hit the ground. Brown liquid and lots if shattered glass were on the ground right behind me. The parents still were frozen, but the workers were pretty nice and told the kids to watch their step and be careful as they got another worker to come help clean up the mess. These parents are a disgrace and should've done and known better. Their kids were running around the entire store with free will. I commended the professionalism that these workers had, because I would've crashed out lol. We left before the clean up so not sure if they had to pay for it or not... I would've charged them double.

Not the case here the floors were exceptionally clean. I didn't buy any fish or meat but definitely would have. The fish were well kept under ice as they should be. Homebest Market in Allston is a small Asian snack store that punches well above its size. We walked…read moreinto a compact but well organized space, with shelves lined with snacks, drinks, and pantry staples from across Asia. The selection is genuinely impressive for a shop of this footprint, covering a range that you would otherwise have to travel further for. The layout is easy to navigate and the store feels well stocked without being cluttered. The snack aisles are the main draw. We noticed the Chinese matcha options in particular stand out, with a variety that goes beyond what most spots in the area carry. Prices are affordable across the board, which makes it easy to stock up without thinking too hard about it. The ice cream in the back freezer bin is worth knowing about, especially during warmer months when a cold snack on the way out makes the stop feel complete. Service is welcoming and the kind of place where regulars are clearly appreciated. We felt a genuine warmth from the staff, and when we spent a little more than usual, the experience was pleasant in a way that feels like a neighborhood shop rather than a transactional convenience stop. Overall, Homebest Market is the spot to know in Allston for anyone with an interest in Asian snacks and drinks. We would come back for the matcha options and the ice cream, and we appreciate that we can find so much in such a small space without breaking the bank.

It was more of an egg omelet cooked with some crab rather than a lump of mostly crab meat, but it was soft, savory, and delicious. The kimbap was also delicious and was restaurant quality for less than restaurant prices. Unlike the Central Square location, this HMart does not have a Paris Baguette inside or a seating area in the front, so you'll need to take your grab-and-go items somewhere else to eat. The variety of items was about the same though, with premade korean foods, premade sushi and sashimi, and many aisles of Asian frozen foods, produce, and packaged foods. I would definitely come back here again!

However, for the dining service the staff at the counter was on his phone the entire time and totally inattentive. It wasn't clear when he was talking to us or on the phone and wouldn't pause his call to take our order. Just would take our order in between him speaking on the phone. The food itself was also mixed. The jerk chicken was really good with an okay kick to it. The fried okra was very tasty and crispy. The hatian hot chicken though was very disappointing. It was a poorly constructed fried chicken sandwich without anything unique about it. The chicken itself was okay but the sandwich definitely is not worth the $14. You can get much better fried chicken sandwiches in many other places. And overall the atmosphere wasn't great. Wasnt bad but sort felt like a high school cafeteria. This tiny store wasn't very appealing when we first wandered by, but what caught our eye was the lychees for sale on the street level outside the store. When we wandered into the shop they had a ton of frozen and vacuum sealed items with little fresh groceries. The cashier was present physically but barely made a peep when we said hello. We ended up buying a bag of lychees which were amazing. Beyond these, the store was fairly bland and there are plenty of other shops in the area selling similar items. Final thought, if you enter the store with items from a different store be prepared to be vigorously questioned about paying for them here. We had this experience with a few bottles of water we brought in.
