Took my beloved dog into to Sumner February 4th (Sunday) it was an emergency, my dog was/had what appeared to be a seizure, called the Sumner Vet they said to bring him in right away and they would assess the urgency! They took him back right away and I waited for 3.5 hours for the vet to call me back and tell me he was fine, I insisted that he wasn't fine and the vet suggested some bloodwork, I said great, waited 3 more hours to be told my dog had thyroid problems and a UTI given meds and sent home! My dog died Feb 6th! I definitely felt like the Vet did not do his job and was more concerned about money than the care of my pet! I would never take any animals there! The front office gals were all very nice and professional, the office manager was also very kind, but the Vet and his boss were horrible and dishonest, and for those reasons I leave them a terrible review! The worst vet experience I have ever had. I've been bringing my dog here for most of his life due to epileptic seizures. But today I brought him in to have his anal glands expressed, when he was too squirmy they sent me home with Trazadone (which side effects include seizures, irregular heartbeat and sudden death). So on the way to vet, he had two separate seizures. When we arrive I am not happy, obviously. So I get on the line with one named Dr. Larson, who had to be the most rude veterinarian/dr I have ever spoke with. He said my dog was aggressive, and a liability for his staff which is a point blank a lie, especially after the lady told me the day prior he was not aggressive in any way. Of course i was being a tad aggressive on the phone, but who wouldn't, when it seemed Mr. Larson did not care about my animal or his needs whatsoever. On the other hand the ladies that helped me and my dog were amazing and very sympathetic. As for the Dr, I cannot say the same. Update: Was told my dog expressed his anal glands after having a seizure and that they were empty, but the next day he expressed them on the floor of our home. I will not be lied to any further by this vet and can tell you with complete confidence that they have lost a long term customer. I can't say enough about Sumner Vet Hospital. Last night my daughter and I brought her dog in after waiting for hours at Summit. I called Sumner and spoke to Danny or Annie about my situation. She was very thorough explaining they're check in process and that they're wait times were high at the time. She did recommend coming prepared with a charger and snacks in case the wait was longer than expected. How thoughtful! Although the news we received wasn't as hoped for- the staff was absolutely wonderful. Danny even made sure we had cold water and a full box of tissues on hand while we were in the room. I have had to utilize this vet clinic multiple times. My dog has cluster seizures that are not easily stopped. During the pandemic this place was doing its best to accommodate a high number of patients. Despite this, I've been happy with the services here. The only issues I had were related to payment when I had to use the overnight shelter and the wait time for emergency appointments which is out of their control. They're doing the best they can. Today they really earned bonus points! I arrived 15 minutes early for my appointment and mentioned to the front desk I'm a little worried about the timing of the rest of my day. I do feel sorry for the staff here, having to explain to each person with an emergency that their pet didn't make the triage cut and send them home with no care. After getting hit by a car, we were turned away with our animal who was critically injured because the vital signs were "normal." The tech that brought our animal back out said it looked like "something is wrong with the leg" which was a gross understatement. We found an ER in Tacoma that would take her based on the severity of the injury and later that day, put down. I'm sorry we wasted precious time here waiting for vitals to be taken. If I could give it a zero star, I would have. This is the worst place to bring in your fur babies. The wait time is over 8 hrs, if not longer, and you can't leave and have them call you when your time is almost up, or you will lose your place in line. When you ask the front desk an eta, they can't give you one. This is the most horrible place I have ever been, never again!!! With only one Dr. and a bunch of staff people that can't do Sh*t. Two weeks ago, we were faced with having to hug our six-year-old fur baby goodbye; we thought we would have much longer with her. So to say that we were shocked and heartbroken is an understatement, it happened so fast we are still having a hard time processing that she is gone. Xena had an amazing but short life, she loved going to Sumner Veterinary Hospital for all services from wellness care, to grooming, lodging and daycare services. Xena had to spend her last three days of her life in the ER at Sumner Veterinary Hospital where she had to have extensive treatment from, blood transfusions, IV's, feeding tubes and around the clock care. I was able to visit as much as possible and I watched all the technicians day and night treat her as if she were their own pet. Dr. St.Cin and the other attending doctors were amazing with their communication, the diagnosis and what the best and realistic treatment options we had. In the end, Xena's poor body could not fight any longer and we had to say goodbye. We were kept up to date daily about where our finances were at compared to the estimate we were given. I saw firsthand how hard the teams were working not only to care for my pet but for other pets that were there too, for people to say they only care about money is not true. I am very thankful I have pet insurance so I did not have to make decisions based on money and it being a financial burden to care for my pet to the best of my ability. read more

We brought our dog for an emergency visit, he suddenly lost feeling in his rear leg. We got there at approximately 9:30 PM and waited 7 hours to be told he had a tumor and she had never seen this in a dog. She also said he had a heart murmur which was serious and we need to take him to a cardiologist right away or euthanize him. We found a cardiologist in Vancouver at Pacific Northwest er vet. After driving the 3 hours to get there we were told his heart was fine and he had a problem absorbing proteins and did a scope and biopsy to find out cause. He stayed for 3 nights, was put on a feeding tube. It's been a week since we brought him home and he is doing great and eating on his own now. We go back tomorrow for biopsy results to find out cause. He's been on meds and is walking on his leg again. WE WILL NEVER GO BACK TO SUMNER! We recently had to have our cat put down. They were very respectful and kind. We were pleased with their care.

I originally gave them 5 stars for their customer care and efficiency. But, it seems there is no communication or follow through for prescriptions. The the front desk told us that the prescription was taken care of, obviously a lie. After a week of issues with them verifying the prescription for our cats special food, the pet store has cancelled our order even after they called and emailed the veterinarians office, and they never got back to them. So now my cat is out of food. I will be showing up there tomorrow, and will not leave until I get a prescription. read more

We lost our father last Tuesday, a short illness after difficulty breathing and then he was gone. We had no way to take care of his dog, Dotty. Dot, an 11 year old dalmation, had bloody urine and trouble urinating. We suspected bladder stones, which is a serious problem. I called around, all the local vets were overbooked. Sumner Vet Hospital was recommended by a friend and I called. Kelsi answered the phone, was terrifically compassionate during the hardest time in our lives. She told us straight up that there could be a long wait to get Dotty medical attention because of the COVID pandemic but that they could help. I drove down with Dot, waited the three hours Kelsi said was about typical and right on time they called me in the parking lot and came and took Dot inside. I waited an additional hour, then began to feel ill myself. I called and they said 'No problem, we will call you when Dotty's evaluation is completed. I drove home at 11:30pm. The next morning I checked my phone and Dr.Van Maren had left a message. She said she had heard I wasn't feeling well and was apologetic, but that Dotty had a simple UTI and they would give her antibiotics. What a relief. I called to ask about boarding and another nice girl helped us make the arrangements with no trouble at all. I want the thank Kelsi, Dr. Van Maren and the rest of the staff for helping us in such a difficult time for us under unprecedented difficult times for the entire world. When I got her to my vet at 7:00 am the same morning they called me, she did in fact have a fever and was experiencing a pretty serious infection. Yes I did sign a financial responsibility but they wouldn't even allow me to come in the door to be able to even sign this form without charging my card FIRST. AWFUL business practice if you ask me. Just there for the money $165...$165!!!! That's what I was charged to be told my cat didn't have a fever before they sent me on my way because they didn't want me to wait. "We'll call you when we can see her." The triage girl told me that only 3 people were in front of me and they'd do bloodwork. Oh I understand more critical cases are seen first. For the hour I sat there before they sent me home, not a single car pulled in. Unless your pet is about to breathe it's last breath or it's limb is handing DO NOT bring your pet here. The cat got very sick and had urinary blockage, the techs rushed in him into the back and started care right away. The doctor was very knowledgeable and helped us choose the appropriate care. ***DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU LOVE YOUR FUR BABIES***Let me start off by saying that I don't want a response to this review from this Vet Hospital. There is nothing you can do or say to make the terrible and heartbreaking experience that I had any better. Responding would be putting salt on the wound. I brought my sweet dog Dozie here because she was throwing up and having diarrhea. We arrived right after midnight, and they took her in within about an hour after we waited in the parking lot (I'm not mad at that). However, during the time we waited for her to be seen Dozie threw up twice and it started to look like there was blood in it. I showed the vet tech person that came to get her the mess to verify if it was blood or not. The doctor called me about an hour later and asked if anything had changed with Dozie's diet. I told him that we changed her food about a month ago, but she's been fine with it. I also stated that I gave her ¼ of a hamburger a couple of days before and with that he automatically said that she had pancreatitis. He never offered to run any blood work or tests and after reading more about pancreatitis in dogs, the doctor should've ran blood work to verify it was truly pancreatitis during that first visit. He stated that he was going to give her a shot that would keep her from throwing up for 24hrs and, some medicine to help with diarrhea. I bring her home and put her in her room to go to sleep. I wake up from a stench coming all the way from her room. There was blood everywhere coming from her backside. I took her straight back to them at 7:45am. The tech came straight out to get her, and she said that Dozie did look space headed and not good. The doctor (a different one from the night before) called me and stated that bleeding in stool is common for pancreatitis and asked if I would like to have them to do blood work to verify that it was truly that, I said yes of course. The doctor said it would be about an hour to get the results and if I wanted to leave instead of wait in the parking lot I could. I wasn't going to leave and then my "feelings" got hungry. I went to pick up my breakfast and was headed back to the hospital, but I received a phone call from a vet tech saying that Dozie stopped breathing and asked if I wanted them to try to resuscitate her. I said yes, save my f'ing dog!! I get back to the hospital and the doctor calls me again and says she had a weak heartbeat but not where it should be and there wasn't very much more, they could do for her. I asked if I could go see her. They let me in. I waited in a waiting room and the doctor comes in with Dozie with her togue hanging out and gives me her. The doctor said that he had the shot to put her to sleep. I asked again, if there was anything else they could do for her, and he said no. I said my goodbyes and she was gone. The doctor took Dozie out of the room and then the tech came in to go over all the paperwork and billing. The tech kept calling Dozie by a different name and I corrected her. The tech actually started literally laughing and said, oh this whole time I thought her name was ...Whatever she was calling her. I couldn't believe she was being all lighthearted and giggly. The tech had no empathy skills at all. Fast forward to yesterday, I called to see if Dozie's ashes had arrived yet because I haven't heard anything from the Hospital, mind you she passed on 9/29/2021. The person who answered the phone asked if I have been contacted yet and I said, no that is why I was calling. She said, I see here that we did try to call you on the 10/3 to let you know that we had her ashes, but your voicemail was full. It is now 10/13 and they only tried to call one time. WOW!! AGAIN, STAY CLEAR OF THIS HEARTLESS PLACE!! ***FOLLOWED UP TO THEIR RESPONSE TO MY REVIEW & THEIR AUDACITY!!**^ Oh, if you are going to comment on my review, you better have your facts correct!! There was NEVER any discussion of ANY Outpatient treatment VS Diagnostic!! That is is BOLD FACE LIE!!! I WAS NOT given any choice other than medication the first time I was there. Then in the morning when I brought her back YOUR clinic wasted time calling me to ask me if I wanted CPR done on my baby instead of just starting it on your own. I did opt to euthanize my sweet dog because when I came in to see her, she was lifeless with her tongue hanging out AND THE DOCTOR SAID THERE WAS NOTHING MORE THEY COULD DO!! They have a credit card machine in the exam room because even if they make you wait forever and end up doing nothing for your pet - they still want you to pay before you even walk out the room. I live in Winlock, WA. on June 1, 2021 my dog went down and couldn't get up or walk. I called every clinic including my regular clinic in Chehalis to a Clinic in Lakewood. The Lakewood clinic couldn't see her but they suggested the Sumner Veterinary Hospital. I called them and they told me to bring her up. I arrived there at 2:30p.m. Remember this was during COVID so I couldn't go in, but they instructed me to call and tell them which parking spot I was in. It took 5 hours for someone to come out and look at my dog and 12 hours before she went in. Yes, it was 2:30a.m., but at least they treated her. Fast forward to this past August my dog quit eating; again no one would see her except SVH., they found a internal abscess. They drained it and and put her on antibiotics, she was fine for almost two months when she quit eating again. This time a clinic in Olympia said they would see her, but they ended up telling us they didn't have the proper equipment to treat her. So, we went back to SVH. After examining her, they found she had a large tumor on her intestine. Being 13 years old they and we didn't think she could survive the surgery or the recovery, So, we had to have her put down. The doctors and staff were great and showed real compassion for her. Expensive, yes for an emergency visit, but still cheaper than other clinics. Schedule an appointment and they are reasonably priced. If we get another pet SVH will be our regular vet. clinic. Phil W. read more

I have taken both of my dogs to the emergency vet here now. The staff has been professional, sympathetic, kind, and knowledgeable both times. They stitched up a bad cut on one dog and ran diagnostics on my other dog when he suddenly collapsed. I trust them with my pets' care and also appreciate that they make sure I understand what they've done and what follow up I need to do after the visit. I have been giving my 16 year old cat with stage 3 kidney disease subcutaneous fluid injections for three years, which he needs to stay alive, and we ran out of solution and needles. He needs his treatment immediately. Suddenly they refuse to refill his prescription unless I pay them an additional hundred dollars for a checkup, and won't even schedule a checkup unless I pay it up front. I don't happen to have a hundred dollars at the moment, and he's out of fluid, so they will be very happy to just let my cat die unless they get their money first. What a bunch of scumbags! (I don't like them anyway... the last time I was in, the vet suggested rather than go to all this trouble I should just consider letting them kill my cat since he's old and sick anyway. We called them after their worthless apology and they didn't seem to know what we were talking about. Unfortunately we had to bring Sammy in for a 4th time because nobody else was open. My review remains the same. We asked them repeatedly for all the records for our Puppy from all visits and each request they promised to send it to our email and yet we have received NOTHING. Horrible! Won't be coming back! WARNING - STAY AWAY FROM SUMNER ANIMAL HOSPITAL! LET ME START BY SAYING and I think we can all agree, "It is very stressful when a beloved pet is ill. Add to this the rudeness/attitude of the staff upon arrival and the dismissal of my pet's situation". there is just no excuse for this and the equivalent of inadequate care! It seems the attitude was to just do the minimum to get my pet seen, but charge as much as we can in the process. Seriously, how do these people sleep at night! I brought my cat in on the evening of August 9. He wasn't able to go to the bathroom and was very ill. I explained the situation and that i believed he was constipated. I was told only critical care patients were being seen. When it is your pet the last thing you need to hear is that your pet is not sick enough to be seen right away or within a reasonable period of time or maybe not at all. What? Not being able to defecate is not critical? The first person to speak with me took my information and brought my cat back to the treatment area. She was rude and very short! Very poor communication skills. A robot would have been friendlier. No one spoke to me for over 3 hours except to say I must pay the $195 fee up front. This staff person even tried to call me saying I wasn't in the building when I was sitting right in the waiting area. WTF! A doctor would not look at my cat until I paid the fee. Are you kidding me? Sorry, but this is outrageous. I arrived just after before 7 pm and all they cared about was getting this damn fee charged to my credit card. When I finally saw the doctor he spoke so fast I could not understand a word he said. He started by saying my cat was the most critical case that evening and then throwing out all possible diagnosis of cancer, kidney failure, heart failure, etc. Talk about stress! And every time I would explain why I was there he was not interested in the "history". He kept interrupting me in an effort to shut me up. it was almost as if he wanted my cat to sick! He just wanted to talk over me and paint a very poor picture of my cat's situation. He hadn't run any labs yet, but he was saying all these dreadful things. He finally ran labs and everything came back normal! Imagine that...the final diagnosis, the cat is constipated. He needed an enema for Christ sake! Finally got an enema and low and behold the cat could poop. Oh, and yes he pooped but they didn't even bother to clean him up. He came home covered in feces. Poor baby! And then the final bill of $466 over and above the $195. Labs and an enema cost me nearly $500 more. This place is a disaster! An animal hospital without any care, compassion, or staff that knows/cares what they are doing. Front desk help standing around chatting. And I am sitting waiting 3+ hours to be seen What is wrong with these people? Do they honestly think we are not watching what they are doing? The staff was rude! The doctor was a joke! Very unprofessional! They care only about adding tests to drive up the bill. I left there thankful my cat was able to relieve himself but completely dissatisfied with how I was treated. I have never seen such disrespect and ATTITUDE! DO NOT TAKE YOUR BABIES HERE. WORST CARE EVER!!! TO THE SUMNER STAFF: you ask that we be kind to you; that you are "overworked". Absolutely terrible. Just got back from 12 hours at sumner, 6 of which my cat was not seen at all. I had to call and request his basic vitals (temperature, as he had a fever earlier and I was hoping for an update) 5x before I got an answer. At one point, no one was around and I could hear my cat meowing to the point I was curious if they had just been keeping him behind the front desk in his crate. The vet took forever to get in touch with us, and was pushing euthanasia, very rudely. When our primary vet opened, we requested our pet back so we can take him there instead. When we got him back, the signs of neglect were clear - his wound looked worse than when we arrived, they did not bother to clean him up, and he had urinated in his crate. I do not recommend this place by any means. read more

DO NOT TAKE UR PET HERE FOR MEDICAL ATTENTION. If i could give this place a (NEGATIVE) 5 stars i would. My daughter brought her dog here because she was bitten by another dog. These people just looked at my kids dog, took her money, did a half up stitch job and turned her around. Within 2 days she returned because there was some sort of fluid (bad smelling) coming from the dogs wounds when she returned they TOOK her money again and put some sort of contraption to catch the drainage and sent her home again, keep in mind this is the second visit. She AGAIN had to come back because the dogs skin was badly infected and it looked terrible. when she got there she was told that the dog would have to have surgery and would stay overnight. My daughter goes home and returns the next day only to find out that her dog has to be put down. They offered to keep the dog on oxygen for a night and the cost would be $2500, keep in mind we are already in about $1500 in medical bills from dealing with these people. So a tough decision had to be made on keeping this pet. After all this all they could say is we need to know by a certain time if you want to keep her ashes from a cremation and that would cost us an additional $200. Its just hard to see a dog dying from being bitten by another dog, this was a lack of professionalism and greed. Please find somewhere else to take your dog. Gonna be seeking legal advice read more

I really hate to leave negative reviews about any business, especially during a time when there are serious challenges, especially for vets. However I think pet owners need to have the information they need to choose a veterinarian as it is also very difficult for us to find care for our beloved animals right now. My mom took her cat to Sumner for many years, and they were great, especially caring and accommodating during the kitty's illness and eventual end of life. I also had a couple of emergency visits with other animals over the years, and had equally good experiences. Things have been sadly different since the switch to "pandemic mode." The doctors and techs I have seen have still been excellent and obviously really care about animals and their profession. However, the decisions that seem to have been made about how this business is run have caused me to need to look elsewhere. The clinic is booking itself to 100% capacity many weeks into the future. Most vets seem to be doing this (even before covid). The difference with Sumner specifically is that if your pets get sick, there is absolutely no option to have them seen in less than this period of many weeks except the "Emergency Room" system. The emergency vet thing has usually, in my experience, been a bit of a racket. In a true emergency, a critical injury or life-threatening illness, it's absolutely needed and I'm thankful Sumner is here to provide it. The problem here is their use of it as an outlet to overbook general appointments. Currently, I have a sick cat (established patient at this clinic) that's not in immediate danger. Can't get an appointment here for over a month. Nobody else will see a "new patient" for months either. My option is to drive to Sumner and sit in the parking lot for a completely indeterminate amount of time (there's a "wait time" board in front of the building that seems to be permanently set to 12 hours) and play phone-tag with overburdened receptionists while the cat sits in a carrier until someone gets to it. The answers that staff have obviously been instructed to give are exactly what's in the response to every review here - basically, "This is an emergency room, it takes as long as it takes. Why are you here if it's not an emergency?" I imagine that this stream of "standby" customers also makes it much harder for the staff to deal with true emergencies. Whoever is making decisions about utilization and business models here needs to do better - unless they do, I strongly urge pet owners to get established at another vet that doesn't try to unnecessarily channel them into a 6-hour parking lot wait (not to mention emergency bill rates). read more
