It's so funny because I've tried multiple different vets, and she won't let anyone touch her... they've even tried gabapentin and trazodone because she was so "anxious". Rob at sumner vet doesn't require any meds, and they allow me to pay after the service is completed incase Dremel doesn't work or she throws a tantrum and doesn't let him do it at all. I'm so happy we made the decision to visit this place for our boy Olaf. We drove all the way from university place based on the er style help we were hoping for. As soon as we arrived we were greeted and welcomed in by the ladies in the front desks. They were very good on communicating the process and prices for services. I really appreciated the price for ER service 199.99, but overall the service and help we received was world class. We were able to get seen within a good timeframe, Olaf was examined and was diagnosed with ITP. Unfortunately this turned out to be possibly fatal, but the vet did give us the breakdown of the other option if we went with treatment way before the putting him to sleep option was even brought up which I appreciated. The staff was very sincere and supportive in every step along the way. This was the hardest day of my life and they made it as painless as they could. Our boy is in doggy heaven and we are happy he is no longer suffering. Thank you to the wonderful staff here, you all show the compassion and understanding of a staff that actually cares. I would recommend one thing, possibly a rear entrance/exit for those who just went through a loss... I told my brother not to go there but it's was the only place he could go for emergency before 6pm, they seen him quickly which was good because they made me sit in my car for hours when my dog was dying from an allergic reaction to an infected dog bite his blood was boiling and they told me pets are seen case by case meaning worse shape first and they said my dog was fine he's breathing isn't he, I said barely when he had a temp that was life threatening anyway. My brother went in to have his dog looked at for overheating and possibly bleeding from ruptured blood vessels in the throat, they put him on oxygen gave him x rays and some drugs cost him 1000$ also tried to convince him his dog needed to stay at the vet for the night for 5000$, I told him bring the dog to me I'll take care of him I inspected the dog and found that his gum from front k9 was bleeding, it was not coming from his organs a cat with a glass eye in his ass could see that he was worked up from tooth pain causing him to overheat from pain there's a reason they have 2.5 stars and that's being generous these people are incompetent and money grabbers now he has to go to a real vet tomorrow and get his tooth fixed read more

It's taken me a while to write this review because the experience was truly difficult and heartbreaking. I came to this clinic after my cat started acting very strange--hiding in his cat tree all day, not eating, not drinking. I initially scheduled an appointment with my primary vet, but they told me to take him in immediately due to the urgency of his symptoms. I first took him to a walk-in clinic in Federal Way. They did a quick exam and told me he had a urinary obstruction and needed to be rushed to an ER. I was given a list of emergency clinics, and unfortunately, in my panicked state, I chose the one closest to home--this clinic. Upon arriving, my experience with the front desk staff was decent. They recognized that my cat was in critical condition and rushed him to the back immediately. Sadly, that's where the positive experience ended. The next staff member who came out immediately asked, "Can you afford this?" and proceeded to hound me for hours about my ability to pay for his care. They demanded proof of my bank account balances, Care Credit, and credit card limits from multiple staff members--all before giving me any updates on my cat's condition. At that point, I didn't even know if my cat was still alive while being aggressively badgered for at least $3,500 upfront. After hours of stress, I finally paid the $3,500, and in the following days, they made sure to use every single penny of that budget. This included sending me home with an expensive bag of dry and wet cat food that my cat didn't even like or eat. One week later, the same issue occurred again. This time, I took him to Summit Veterinary Referral Center. The staff there were infinitely more compassionate, informative, and kind. They walked me through my options, explained outcomes, and provided genuine care without pressuring me about payment upfront. Unfortunately, the decision was ultimately made to put my cat down, but the experience at Summit made an already devastating situation far less traumatic. What makes this clinic stand out--in the worst possible way--is their prioritization of money over the well-being of the animal. I've never been harassed for payment like this at any vet clinic before, and when I brought my concerns to management, I was informed that this behavior was not standard practice. It actually felt fairly illegal being forced to show my personal accounts to so many people as "proof" I could pay. However, nothing seemed to come from the conversation, and I was left with the sense that they cared more about monetary gain than helping my pet. I will never bring any of my animals to this clinic again. I have given myself over two months to process my grief, before writing this. I wanted to make sure I was writing from more of a clear head, and not straight from pain. I took my dog, Pepper, to South Hill Vet for a lot of years, until he got older and his health problems became more urgent than a far-out appointment could accommodate. This was, mostly, having to do with a quick anal gland expression. I started taking him to Sumner Vet around 2020, and particularly around 2022 when he started having major panic attacks and health issues. Without getting into all of the details, we were regulars at Sumner Veterinary Hospital, from emergency vet visits, to the groomer, to his primary care. Most of the staff knew Pepper, and he was one of the only dogs that I could see at the vet who was genuinely excited to be there. No matter what procedure he was getting done, he would trot in like he owned the place and patiently get his shot or whatever had to happen. He was a happy boy, and he loved the staff. We truly felt like family there. That's why, when the horrible decision had to be made to do what no pet owner wants to do, I entrusted Sumner Vet with Pepper's end of life care. The doctor who administered the treatment was kind, and treated us with compassion. It made a horrible moment more bearable, if that's possible. However, everything after Pepper's passing was the most transactional, uncaring process that I have ever experienced. I waited a week for Pepper's ashes, and when the staff finally called to let me know, I only had a missed call from them with no voicemail. Clearly, I knew what it was about, and I called back to wait on hold forever. I was finally greeted by someone who didn't seem to have a clue how much I was trying to hold it together just to have a brief conversation about what she had called for. She put me on hold again, and finally said something brisk about how, "yes it's ready for pickup." When I did walk in to pick up what was left of my boy, the same staff member was chipper and chatty and made jokes about how she wouldn't have to walk far to go find the bag since they were just sitting on the back counter. I got a, "Here you go!" and then she went back to her work, while my world fell apart. I was not given the choice of an urn for Pepper's remains. I was given the choice of the type of procedure (cremation or burial), but the urn was a simple box. And that was fine. I never realized how small it would be. And I certainly never realized that it would be sealed shut. My idea of sprinkling his ashes in his favorite places was shot by the fact that he was now in a sealed container. But more than that was just how transactional everything was. No other customers were at the front desk when I picked up Pepper's ashes. I was clearly trying not to fall apart. I didn't receive any sympathy, or an, "I'm sorry for your loss", or even a quieter mood given how heavy the moment was. I received a letter from Chewy in the mail. I received a note from Petco. I have even received cards from other vets after losing a guinea pig and a hamster. But Sumner Vet, who had been his caring staff for so many years, couldn't have been bothered to even acknowledge my loss in a quick statement at the front desk. I understand there is a clear line in this business, and that doctors and staff deal with loss every day. And I understand I am not alone in my grief. But after so long of feeling like family, I felt and continue to feel completely cast aside as a transaction completed. I would not recommend Sumner Vet to anyone who may ever have to go through this process of end of life care. Our beloved Irish Wolfhound was seen by this great Veterinary hospital when many other hospitals were at capacity when I called. ( Don't assume, always call before arriving!) Once again we were very impressed by the hospital, Dr. Sugerman and his team. It was a difficult situation and diagnosis and we greatly appreciate their efforts. It was an expensive visit with a not happy ending but all efforts were made to be sure of diagnosis. Staff was caring and compassionate throughout the visit. We drove over an hour to bring him in and would do so again if our local ER is not available. With a kennel of champion dogs, we expect top notch care, and have a list of providers that provide that. Their "exam" is an absolute joke it's basically one of their vets looking your dog over for maybe 30 seconds. It's too bad you guys got greedy Sumner because you lost a long time loyal customer. I am done getting ripped off and it's absolutely insulting that you would charge that much for a pathetic excuse of an exam. I found a new vet that came highly recommended and their exam is a QUARTER of the price of yours! It's no wonder you guys have so many poor reviews and why people are going elsewhere. You guys aren't the only vet in town and you're pushing people away with your ridiculous prices. We took our dog in who was having a moderate allergic reaction with hives swelling his face and neck. We arrived and were 5th in the clinic at that time. The staff was friendly and checked us in. The veterinarian who in charge of triage did a great job of asking us what happened and took our dog to the back to give him some shots to reduce swelling. While we were waiting the veterinarian was checking on everybody and an additional 5 more pets and owners showed up. All the pet owners were in a heightened state of stress for obvious reasons but the staff handled it graciously and calmly. At one point there was an a dog in an emergency that pulled up to the clinic. The veterinarian that was triaging all the pets went outside with the owners and she came running in with a 100 lbs dog on her shoulders and sprinted into the hospital to treat the dog. I don't know how to say this but if that doesn't show you that these people actually care about your pets then I don't know what will. Yes they see pets in order of the severity of illness so sometimes the wait is long. Yes they do focus on payment because treatment isn't free. But if your pet needs emergency services come to this hospital! read more

I recently got a young cat named Zuma. My first phone call to Sumner veterinary hospital they walked me through everything I needed to know about getting him in. And the day before his appointment I was nervous because Zuma hasn't been easily adjusting. The same person answered my call again and helped ease my mind about bringing him in. I believe her name was Christina! The appointment went better than I could have imagined. Dr. Amy Smith was there for Zuma. She was able to make sure he was getting the care he needed and back on the right track in life. I also forgot his medicine and paperwork because I was worried about getting him to the car safely. And she ran the medicine and paperwork out herself to me! I can't say enough how pleased I am to have a great place to take Zuma for care! read more

I'm extremely disappointed with the way this clinic handled my recent experience. I emailed them to cancel my pet's appointment more than 48 hours in advance, well within a reasonable timeframe. They later claimed they never received the email and informed me--after the fact--that email is not a valid form of communication. This was never stated on their website or communicated to me in any way. They also tried to say they called me to confirm appointment the day prior which was false. Instead of handling the situation with understanding or even basic courtesy, they were rude, dismissive, and outright refused to issue a refund. It's clear they're more interested in charging fees than in actually supporting their clients or their pets. I would not recommend this clinic to anyone who values compassion, professionalism, or transparency. read more

Update; I needed to use an ER vet because my dog was choking and gagging and this is the closest vet. We were in the parking lot for SEVEN HOURS. When we got there he had stopped choking, but clearly had something stuck in his throat. The nurse gave him trazodone after checking his vitals (she is the ONLY one I have never had a problem with at this clinic, and she is quite nice and understanding) and about 5 minutes after we went back to the car he began choking and gagging again. They had plenty of opportunity to tell me that they had two criticals and that it wouldn't be soon for him to be seen, I even called in asking if I had time to grab something to eat, which they also could have used that opportunity to tell me to go home. Someone finally came out at 12:30am, checked his vitals again and then told me to go home and get some sleep, they can call me when it's almost his turn, and if I don't hear from them, come back at 6:45. I called at 6:15-6:20 and asked if I were to head down there if he would be seen in a reasonable amount of time, because I don't want to head down there and not be seen again for a few hours. They told me they can't guarantee because if other pets walk in they have to serve them first.. as if I hadn't already been on the board since 5:30pm the previous day. They could not even remotely give me a timeline, and in fact told me that if I wasn't back by 7am they would remove me off the board. I told her (at this point after being on the phone and on hold) that I wouldn't be able to get there until 7:15, to which she told me that was fine, but she was CLEARLY very agitated with me for no reason. I ended up calling back en route because my regular vet could take him in as a drop off. Don't even get me started on the fact that they almost didn't let me use my husbands CareCredit card because he wasn't present and blamed in on CareCredit's policy, even though I use it all the time at our regular vet, no questions asked, I just need to be able to verify the info. The receptionist also told me to stop getting frustrated with her, for no apparent reason, I wasn't yelling, raising my voice or anything, but being stern on this is not a fact, and asked to speak to a manager. The receptionist was new, and did nothing to solve the situation, when I asked to speak to a manager she told me that she can check me in and we can figure out the card later. Like no, I need to figure this out now because if I can't use the CareCredit I need to go somewhere else. I did speak to the manager who did in fact help me and told me the receptionist was new and she was just doing what she was told and I get that, but if you cannot take criticism over the phone and cannot find a solution for a client who is clearly already stressed out, you need to find a different job. All in all, AVOID AVOID AVOID!! My time was wasted yet again, and I got wonderful suggestions for BluePearl and Uptown in the future. read more

I leave this review as a caution to those who take their pets to this emergency hospital. My husband brought our sweet dog in on Sunday, November 9th for an emergency. He was diagnosed and received treatment. The doctor never mentioned him being in a severe condition or had any sense of urgency. They recommended him staying the night but assured we could bring him home and continue treatment at home. The morning of Monday, November 10th our dog's condition had become worse. We called Sumner veterinary hospital and they recommended us bringing him back in for hospitalization. Something felt off and I did not think the diagnosis was accurate, nor that the treatment was helping. Immediately after my husband got off the phone with sumner veterinary hospital I called our local vet and voiced my concerns. Our local vet was able to get the bloodwork from sumner veterinary hospital. Our vet returned my call and with looking at the bloodwork alone had two possible diagnosis, one being more common. Neither were what the Sumner veterinary hospital diagnosed our dog with or were mentioned when my husband was there at the Sumner hospital. Unfortunately our dog's condition was past the point of treatment and we had to put him down. But we were able to get the correct diagnosis from our local vet, which knowing Sunday morning may have led to our dog getting the proper treatment and surviving. I share our story to caution others. The staff at sumner veterinary hospital is friendly and seem to care. As an emergency vet you should be able to trust them with your pets well being but this was our second experience at sumner veterinary hospital where one of our dogs received unnecessary treatment. This time the result was fatal and I am lead to believe the doctors at this establishment are either inexperienced for an emergency situation or use emergency situations to take advantage of patients. My husband has called to speak to the doctor or a manger multiple times but neither have been available to speak or have returned the call. We will not be returning to this emergency vet. This experience has been heartbreaking and traumatic. From it I have learned we have to advocate for our dogs. Do research, ask questions and if you do not feel right about a diagnosis I hope you have the opportunity to get a second opinion. read more

After frantically calling our normal vet, Afford-A-Vet Animal Clinic, our local vets, Algona Veterinary Hospital and Auburn South Veterinary Hospital and getting denied or told they would call back and never did. Thankfully, Sumner Vet was able to get my cat seen immediately. Even though she wasn't able to be saved, I'm thankful that I was able to get my cat in fast enough to not have suffered long. I'm planning to switch to this place for the care of my other animals as well! I am happy to have found a reliable place in case of emergencies. Uhhhh..not really sure how to respond...Brought my female Great Dane in for lethargy, 1 diarrhea stool...received IV fluids, ultrasound, lab tests ..which showed fluid in colon, high WBC and Fever..treated with Rimadyl injection, antibiotics and IV fluids...24 hrs later...dog was limping and huge swelling in ankle..still lethargy..brought back to ER vet...different Dr. ...xrays...aspiration of swelling change in medication and another Rimadyl injection...went home , bloody diarrhea..called Vet...gave Pepcid..stopped Rimadyl...no definitive diagnosis yet...2 days later called vet again to report no improvement...new plan for stomach medication...dog passed away that night..called to let them know and ask for cremation options..they were actually estimating the charge at 370.00...ummm after paying almost 3500.00 in vet bills with no diagnosis and watching my pet basically bleed out on my living room floor..you are seriously thinking of charging for cremation...ummm..im in healthcare..Rimadyl is an NSAID ...if you were originally treating her for intestinal problems..i would think you would order an antacid prior to giving her that medication..very disappointed with Emergency Vet care here...im not a veterinarian but in healthcare when you screw up you take ownership and help remedy the situation....again very disappointed..Wilma was a cuddler and protector......i really have to think over ever returning here...i was actually going there as the director was a great dane owner...my suggestion for this event...each Vet needs to communicate if a pet is seen 2x in 2 days for issues and to get advice from a giant breed vet if your not familiar..also you need to eat the cost of cremation if a dog dies after discharge from your facility ... read more

This may seem like an odd thing to some to do on the day of my beautiful girl's passing, but here goes. Saturday morning at 1:00am my pup was showing signs of bloat. I loaded her in the car and started calling for help. The only place that was staffed to help us was Sumner almost two hours away. They had a gurney waiting and rushed her in. Unfortunately in spite of the amazing care she received, she passed this morning. They took care of everything for me, processing the claim with my insurance, handling her cremation and with such love and compassion. I am very upset with this place I have always taken my dogs to get groomed here and although I was never fully happy with the job done it was ok, but this last time was the worst maybe because I tried a different girl Casey I believe was her name I specifically told her to not trim down my dog that I wanted to keep his hair longer. Remind you he's a Yorkie and I pick him up and she completely shaved him down. Did everything I told her not to do and it's funny because usually I'll get a call the next day to see how it went and if I was satisfied this time, I didn't get any call cause you can tell how displeased I was not once did they mention have a discount or can we redo nothing and I've taken both of my Yorkies there and the gal that was doing it before she was OK but it wasn't 100% but it was still way better than this time this time just went beyond horrific and my poor dog is shaved during the coldest times of the year, which is absolutely ridiculous and not to mention I drop him off at 8 o'clock, and I don't even get a call back till almost 4 to go pick him up and that's because I called twice to check on him and they said oh he's doing fine just for me to pick him up and he was shaved. It was labor's day weekend, didn't think it was set up this way. Overall visit for vax and check up $235, plus collected my no-show fee of $100. I felt very overcharged even we took in an appt anyways. We also ask for a good trainer recommendation, got one, used it, and didn't make much difference except bought so many new devices, new diet food, supplement plus the $$$$ trainers fee, that wasn't doing much . So not sure their recommendations helpful. Everyone all made more money out of our best interest of our puppy, but we as dog owners didn't feel we got much out of anyone. For a surgery not bad. But in general it's awful. Long waits, spotty care, high prices, few staff, bad vibe. I'm not going back.

My mother had an important appointment for her dog to get an allergy shot that she had to wait over 4 weeks for because she "had to have a regular physician". She got a call the morning of the appointment (that is vitally important for the dog) saying that the vet is sick today so she can't come in unless she waits another 2+ weeks for an appointment or unless she pays $225 for an emergency appointment. The dog is in desperate need of the shot but this place wants to nickel and dime their clients instead of helping sick animals. Very un-compassionate business practice. I cannot recommend this place at all in good conscience after this experience, which is a shame because I had previously had a good experience here with my own dog. Another thing to note is that even though *they* cancelled the appointment the morning of, they did not have a waitlist for a new appointment if someone cancelled and instead suggested that my mother call them several times a day to see if something has opened up. I brought my 7 month old puppy to Sumner ER due to worsening neurological symptoms. I brought my records from my primary vet and another emergency pet hospital that currently had no doctor on staff. She was taken inside, evaluated and brought back out to me. They indicated that since she wasn't "critical" there was nothing they would do for her. She died a little over 12 hours later. 10/19/22 Update: I reached out to Sumner Vet Hospital based on their response below that they couldn't locate me as a "client in our system." I spoke with Nicole (I think) at 3:15pm on 10/17. She collected information from me and indicated that she found my puppy's record in their system and that I'd be hearing back from a hospital representative. So far, I've not been contacted. 10/20/22 Update: I received a call back from two representatives from Sumner the same day that I posted my 10/19/22 update. They reviewed Willow's information as detailed in her examination. They were apologetic for the loss of Willow. I'm adding 1 star given the fact that they were willing to have a difficult conversation with me and acknowledging the trauma of losing a 7 month old puppy. To add additional detail to my above experience. I brought Willow, our 7 month old Morkie puppy, to Sumner on 9/25/22 and at approximately 10:50am she was taken in to be seen. A few minutes later, she was brought back out to me. I was told that she wasn't critical and I was advised to contact her prescribing vet and have them adjust the dosage of her pain medication. Walked in and all 3 front desk personnel were on the phone. Zero acknowledgement of me standing there for 10 minutes with my sick pet. Kind of a frustrating experience at first but thankfully the doctors were knowledgeable and helpful. We rushed our aging cat to SVH who took a very bad turn for the worse. We were fortunate that we didn't have to wait to be seen and were quickly escorted to a quiet family room, and waited less than 5 min to be seen by and tech then vet. This is the third time we have had a dog emergency and each time we have waited more than 4 plus hours. The care is decent but not great and the cost is astronomical. Be prepared to pay upwards of $900 plus dollars. There can be literally one person in the waiting area and you will wait close to five hours. This place and all their staff is amazing. I was turned away from Affordable Animal Hospital in Auburn cause they only cared about the money. My dog was nearly dying from a very high fever. Will not communicate, take/make copies of medical history, don't review medical history for the proper care. Paperwork diagnosis vague & conducting statements. Give you an invoice no labs work, review the medical work done or resolution. The staff, tech, Dr.Millard & Stantel Johnson only have "I don't know or no response". No call or email to pick remains... actually screen calls. Take on patients walking in while telling patients on the phone full occupancy. They won't give you labs or tests unless you have a friend call. No sympathy or remorse. read more
