I almost went to LensCrafters since I know they do repairs, but I decided last-minute to support local and try Ursa because of their great reviews. BEST. DECISION. EVER. The moment I walked in, I was greeted by Juniper, their adorable four-legged mascot, and instantly felt at ease. Nancy, Julie, and Jamie were all incredibly kind, patient, and welcoming. They somehow managed to find a pair of donated designer frames that perfectly fit my existing lenses. Julie even said it's almost unheard of for that to happen--but lucky me, it did! The new frames were gorgeous (and easily three times more expensive than the online pair I had before), and I walked out not just with "fixed" glasses but with a major upgrade. The customer service was absolutely phenomenal, Juniper stole my heart, and the cherry on top was leaving with a beautiful pair of frames that I never would've expected to get that day--especially for free. I've been wearing glasses for over 20 years and have been to countless optical shops, but Ursa blows them all out of the water. They turned what could have been a catastrophic situation into a positive, even memorable experience. Gone are the carpeted floors and quiet, spacious exam rooms where the doctors took time to LISTEN to you took the time to answer questions and just plain worked with you. The assistants were all polite and all the assistant pre-doc exam rooms were dark, quiet and private. Now it's a Walmart conveyor belt shakedown business. A bunch of women who, being foreigners, tell you what to do, and when you attempt to explain something, they look at you with glazed eyes, giggle, and ignore you to get the pre-exam done as quickly as possible. The doctors' exam room are small, harsh cubicles with no warmth at all, the doctor who dealt with me machine-gunning questions getting the exam done in as short time as he could, his schedule marked out in 30-minute blocks. The sales associates want to rush you through to buy something, and when you think about making a decision they huff openly being impatient. The one assigned to me was openly rude. I got my prescription and left. Sadly, Alaska Eyecare Centers have fallen far indeed since Dr. Diane Thanephon and they others where there. Sad.

During the pre-exam procedure, permission is asked for one particular test; cost approx. 30 dollars out of pocket. And even though I always decline, I appreciate the heads up. I started out as a patient with this clinic when their location was on Northern Lights Blvd., years ago. Then, it was rather like visiting someone's cozy home and provided the Alaskan memories of days gone by. Present day, Accurate Vision is more streamlined, and I'm not sure the word clinic jives up anymore, but no matter. Look for Urgent Care as a prompt to this place's building location which will be on your right while heading North on Minnesota Drive (toward downtown). Enter around the back of the building, and take the elevator which is just inside the door. Dr. Kyle Smith comes recommended in my book. He hasn't steered me wrong (as I have experienced with other eye doctors) thus providing thorough exams and correct prescriptions. His manner is upbeat, kind and professional. I am not too thrilled with the front desk service here, as there is an omnipresent thread of tension, and I don't know why. Also, the service provided with follow up texts after having set up an appointment, definitely needs some polish. I received 4 texts stating that I needed to fill out paperwork. Okay, but one method offered was to be done via a link, on my phone, which didn't work. I texted back that I prefer actual paper in person, and was given the response of yes, that will be fine when I come in. Come to find out, I didn't have to fill out any paperwork at all. (Alrighty then!) I came in for an eye exam 3 days before Christmas. This was not such a great idea on my part. I was burned out and so was the doc. (And most likely for entirely different reasons!) Having done some research, the cost for glasses here are definitely on the high side, so being able to take my script and go, is a big plus re: my budget. As much as I would love to try the glasses here, (and having insurance definitely helps) my wallet is still speaking otherwise! Having been to SO many eye clinics in my lifetime, Accurate Vision has been one of the best for me, if only because of Dr. Kyle Smith.

YES, you will generally wait ~1 hr for your appointment, BUT he is considered the best in Anchorage. And this does mean he takes his time with you, TOO. Your appointment will not be rushed. Also, he has fit me and family in after-hours. He loves the cutting edge and is always getting new tech every few years. Unlike other places, every client at every visit goes into their "dark room," which has all the fancy tech (like 5+ machines). I like all the fancy tests done on my eyes. When you come here over time, you can see any changes in your vision, eyeball shape (very expensive machine, I asked questions about it), etc. Dr. D was able to diagnose a young girl with cancer really early, based off something he saw in these tests. This was before other doctors caught it. He is good at what he does and always tries to stay ahead of the curve. He's always reading and studying things. As a major plus, this place is incredibly hygienic. They wipe everything down all the time, which I appreciate, since I'm putting my face near/on it. People have asked on this Yelp page why his exams are more expensive. It's probably because (1) the extra technology and results received from it; (2) supply and demand. He is always booked and always has well-paying clients. Most of his clients come as referrals. That's how we found out about this place. If he lost clients over cost and couldn't run the business, he would have to decrease prices or shutdown (econ 101).
