Horrible, rude waitress. It started with not getting our drink order correctly then walked away when we asked a question regarding what was in the soup she said seaweed and Tuf, what is tuf? she walked away!! I ordered the New York Steak WITHOUT mushrooms, I am allergic to mushrooms. What came with the steak MUSHROOMS! I said I cannot have mushrooms and she stood there and argued then yelled at me that I never told her that, my party said yes she did, she walked away and came right back and said "No vegetables"! I said I can't eat that when there were mushrooms on it in the first place, then she said that there were no mushrooms, and I said that the waitress that brought us the food said there was so who do I trust? The 6 count sushi was phenomenal and each piece is really the size of two. I like to order 2 rolls but at other places am never really full from it. I was stuffed after eating it. Service was incredibly fast and friendly. We walked in at 11:31 and were done eating by 12:00. Very calm feeling to the place. I can not believe I just had a hibachi meal for $6.99! Danville, y'all are lucky. I've had both express hibachi and sit down fancy smancy style Japanese steakhouses and this one takes the cake... well, steak. $6.99 beef tips that is. The location is a bit inconspicuous, in a strip mall attached and nestled between a Dollar Tree and a gym. At first you get the feel that it's an express hibachi, which in a way it was... only as far as the fact that they make it in the back, not at a hibachi table in front of you and the fact that the food arrived minutes after ordering. When I walked in, I have to admit that I was a bit put off by the sign that indicated that there's a $.50 surcharge for any order under $8. What I found most annoying about it is that after gratuity I spent well over $8. Did they seriously think this through? I assure you that it's more annoying and off putting to the patrons than the $.50 is worth. I ordered the beef tip hibachi. Even though they didn't make it in front of me, I could hear the chef in the back preparing what just might be the best hibachi meal I've ever had. Yep, I think I'm past the annoyance of the credit card penalty. Yep, it was the best hibachi I've ever had. The beef was perfectly flavored and not a hint of fat. The vegetables that are hidden by the mound of what they consider lunch portion size of beef, were fresh and tasty, not your average pre-chopped or frozen vegetables. I know fresh mushrooms when I see them. How far is Danville from Lexington? I would say that it's worth stopping in if you're passing through like I was, but I'm going to go as far to say that it's worth the trip from Lexington. read more

food was decent but the owners are racist. we had a problem with service as we asked a waitress for a drink and she sent another employee to check for ID. and said the managers said it wasnt a a valid form of ID . I asked to speak to the manager and she came back with her husband and told us they didn't accept our form of ID. I googled the information and was informed it is acceptable and it's only bc the "owners" managers didn't wanna accept it and refused the service. also were so it wasnt a excuse of are we old enough it just came down to they chose to refuse but the ID is valid so there shouldn't of been a issue to begin with. felt like racism bc were Mexican but we followed the correct steps. read more

Wonderful! I have been all over the country eating Japanese sushi and hibachi and this was one of the best I have had to date! I had the filet hibachi dinner, my daughter had a California roll, husband had a bento dinner and we shared salmon sashimi. It was absolutely delicious and the service was fantastic. The resteraunt is beautiful and waitresses are polite and provide very good service. If you have picky eaters i suggest the gyoza. Its something i found that everybody eats besides rice and noodles. Came across this spot on my way home from Louisville. It is nested between a tj maxx and dollar general. My wife had the mix vegetables roll along with the vegetable tempora. I would rate both of them a 9 out of 10. I had the Kentucky maki which I gave a 7 out of 10 and the crunchy kani which was a 7 out of 10 also and last but not least I had the da bomb roll. It was an 8 out of ten. I will most likely never passed by this location ever again due to my travels but I wanted other people to know that there was some dam good sushi in Kentucky. Summer Hokkaido was a very pleasant surprise in the suburb of Danville. It has an agreeable atmosphere, good food and pleasant(if a tad curt) waitstaff. The restaurant is a decent size, a bit small but still comfortable, with respectable foot traffic. Virtually everything from the miso, to the sashimi, to the hibachi shrimp were all cooked well, but just slightly under-seasoned(though, to be frank this might be to cater more to the local community than anything). There is a decent wine and beer selection, however I was sad to note that sake is not served. Overall, I would certainly recommend Summer Hokkaido, there are some finer points it can be improve upon, but I'd reiterate in saying it is a generally solid establishment. Good local spot and worth a visit! Even when they are busy, as they were tonight, we've never had to wait for a table. Wait staff is always friendly and informative. Hibachi is coked in the kitchen, not table side. You get the standard miso soup and salad with your meal. They have a good selection of sushi and maki options to choose from. I recommend the "Da Bomb" roll. It's served with spicy mayo and eel sauce (delicious combination btw) and is my favorite! The hibachi dinners come with grilled vegetables, noodles, fried rice, and your choice of meat. Tonight I tried the Imperial Hibachi which was a combination of chicken, shrimp, and yakiniku (beef). It was very good, but it was a lot! I had to take a plate home. I would rather have more vegetables and a choice of rice OR noodles. I think I will ask about that next time. read more

Summer Hokkaido offers hibachi grilled meals (in kitchen, not at your table) & AMAZING sushi at really reasonable prices. Our out-of-town guests often tell us that it is the best sushi they have ever eaten. My wife & I eat here about twice each week. The service is always friendly, and the food is delicious & plentiful. I love the strip steak & the yakoniku (steak tips)! Although the yakoniku is a cheaper cut of meat, it absorbs the hibachi flavor even better than the strip steak. Hole in the wall, but good food! We have had most of the sushi rolls from the menu, with no complaints. Favorites are the spicy crunchy tuna roll and da bomb roll. Salad is always fresh. They do serve limited beer (bottles) and wine. Only complaint is the service. Odds are you will have to flag the waitress down for a refill. read more

When Dining In Danville, Kentucky, foreign cuisine can be a bit limited if you are looking for something other than a Mexican restaurant or Chinese buffet. However, Summer Hokkaido is one place that offers consistently good and authentic Japanese dishes and decent quality sushi. The food has always been tasty during my dozen or so visits, and the atmosphere is quaint and clean. However, this is where the review begins to decline...the price is not exactly great. I typically don't complain about price ever, and usually only mention it during an exceptionally great value, but the price here is slightly high for the serving sizes, as I often leave the restaurant desiring just a little bit more. Expect to pay around $30 after tip for two people. The biggest knock against Summer Hokkaido is the consistently TERRIBLE service. There is usually only two servers on hand, no matter how busy. They are never very friendly and sometimes can even be a bit rude. Questions are always met with the shortest and least helpful answers you can imagine. To top it all off, despite dining here more than 10 times, I have never been offered a refill on my drink, as I always have to wave down a server. We ate there 9/9/15 for my husband's birthday lunch. It was after the lunch hour, and looked pretty dark and quiet inside. We had to notify the kitchen we were there, so they don't get much traffic at that time. HOWEVER. The food was fresh, the service was excellent, the bathrooms clean - we loved it. We will definitely be back!!! Gyoza appetizer was terrific, Bento boxes had nice variety.
