I needed work done on two of my ceiling fans, some track lighting, and outlets (to get them up to…read morecode). I called two electric companies, Magee and another well-known one. The other informed me that the did not give quotes ahead of time for the type of work I described, and that I would be charged $137/hour + materials, and that they would just take care of everything when the arrived. Uh... tell me that doesn't sound like a recipe for running my wallet empty! On the other hand, Shayne of Magee Electric was happy to stop by and spent over an hour surveying the work that needed to be done. He wrote me up a very clear estimate, with a very clear breakdown of possible material costs (not really marked up at all!) and hourly rate (which was about half that of the other company). When he came to do the work itself, he brought an assistant to help out. He was super patient in answering all my questions and really knew what he was doing. Incredibly reasonable rate for quality service. They stayed past lunch so I ordered them a pizza which they really appreciated (and even adjusted my rate slightly for a discount -- Shayne's really so nice!). They were super professional and even insisted on taking their shoes off when they entered and even took out the pizza box for me. They really went above and beyond! Magee Electric is a business started by Shayne's father (grandpa?). It's local and family-owned, so another reason to support them! Items plugged in would have power, then it would seem to shut off for no reason and then come back on. My husband came across RJN Electrical and called them up. It took a couple of days to get them scheduled to come out, but there was good communication while we were figuring out a time. They ended up stopping out in the evening. The man who came was friendly and seemed knowledgeable. He figured out our issue and resolved it. Being a very new homeowner I really had no idea how much an electrical call would cost. They charged $75 for the service call, and then $70 an hour for service. The parts were very minimal. In talking to others who have had electricians come over that seems somewhat reasonable. The worker and my husband had a lot in common and were chatting the entire time he was working. My only somewhat complaint was that I am guessing that all that chatting extended the time it took to fix. They charged for 2 hours, he was probably actually there a little longer, but I wonder if he had just been working diligently how long would it have taken? Not a big deal, and it was nice that the guy was friendly and explained things too, just interesting to note. Overall we had a good experience, and I think if any other electrical issues come up I would probably reach out to them again.

A year after we moved into this house our HVAC system died and they replaced it with a Carrier which worked great for 16 years (low end of the expected life) until it died last December on the second 5 degree night we had. We really needed some heat! We are on the JBAC annual maintenance plan and the tech came out at 10 PM and said, yep, it's dead. (Luckily we had a gas fireplace to keep us from freezing.) Estimator came the next day, showed us some options, and the day after that a crew came out and installed a hybrid gas/heat pump system which has worked great for the past 8 months. I enjoyed the annual maintenance included with the JBAC plan, and it has more or less paid for itself in reducing or eliminating service fees for other issues. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was about 10 years ago they installed a pricey UV air purifier unit (my wife had asthma) which died a few weeks after the warranty ran out. Hopefully they don't continue to peddle bad products, but the rest of their work has been great and they are always polite and friendly.
