I had been desperate to have dinner in the Sultan ever since seeing the place. An old converted chapel with a huge crest on the front between its cod-gothic arches, at first pass you assume it's some kind of community centre or art gallery. I mean, there is meant to be a contemporary art gallery in there, but it's predominantly an Indian restaurant upstairs and a coffee and smoothies food court downstairs with some display cases dotted around. Still, fair dues for having a go at the culture bit.
We hit the restaurant after a couple of jars at the Borough as there's no booze at the Sultan. The place has this immense ceiling that made a half full restaurant feel completely empty and a bit like a school sports hall, and the décor in general is the gaudy side of Persian.
The staff were incredibly friendly and were very eager to explain anything and everything, but the food was pretty average. I had a Karahi Gosht which was tasty, but not any better than I can cook at home, and the starters were unspectacular.
All in all not flash enough for a date and not interesting enough to go back, but in all honesty it's still one of the best in the area. I'd order their takeaway. read more
