You've got to drive a long way to find a better selection of old and new vinyl than what Sullivan's offers. Most places around the region who sell records have a limited selection of used records, typically full of country or classical music, and too often many of those records are in terrible shape. That's not the case here. Sullivan's appears to be quite choosy about the used records they buy for resale. I haven't seen anybody with a better selection of classic blues records like titles from Lighting Hopkins and Muddy Waters. The collection of used rock records is solid as well. i don't want to dwell on the used records, though. Sullivan's keeps a fresh stack of new vinyl as well, and it's almost always titles from quality artists. For example, I got Joan Jett's Unvarnished there and play the hell out of it. They even keep up with reissues of the classics like the Misfits and Black Flag. The guy who runs the place is very friendly as well. Definitely not one of those record store snobs who will turn his nose up at the titles you bring to the register. He didn't even laugh at me when I bought the Howard the Duck Soundtrack, and if anyone deserved to be laughed at for a purchase, it was me and Howard the Duck. When I'm trying to find something, this is the first place I go now. If they don't have it, they can probably find it. Sure, I could order just about anything i wanted on the net, but there's nothing quite like going to an actual brick and mortar store and being able to browse for records and actually touch them. Good record stores are like wild tigers, there aren't that many left. If we don't do what we can to preserve them they will be nothing but a memory. Buying a record at Sullivan's is like sponsoring a tiger. It keeps it alive and you might even get to bring home some awesome LP cover art for your troubles. Sullivan's Records has a great selection of new and used vinyl at good price points. They also have CDs and DVDs if you are into more tradition formats of entertainment. There is a consistent shipment of new music every Friday and he is willing to place orders. Some record stores in the general area have vinyl bins filled with old music that nobody wants to hear like Phil Collins and Winger. This is not that kind of store. I've amased a decent record collection in short time with new 180-gram vinyl from artists like the Cure, the Clash, Ramones, Black Flag, Television, Misfits, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Patti Smith, Neil Young, White Stripes, Coltrane, and Miles Davis. The other nice thing is that you can walk in and have an intelligent conversation with someone who is passionate about music. The needle is usually on the record and good sounds will envelope your ears when you walk in the store. There are no sex toys, oversized bongs, or tie dyed tee-shirts, but there are a lot of great albums to pick from. If you enjoy music and live in the Kanawha Valley or the surrounding area you should check it out. read more

One of Charleston's Best! While Sullivan's does have used CD's/ DVD's the highlight by far is the new and used vinyl. There are racks upon racks of used vinyl to peruse through as well as new. Every genre and era of music are represented. Found an original 2001 Space Odyssey Vinyl, great find! Most of what Sam has gotten in for me has been special orders/limited editions. I have eclectic tastes and Sam has done an AMAZING job of keeping any eye out for things for me and hunting things down. Also, they keep a nice selection of accessories on hand to keep your vinly collection in prestine condition. I rarely (if ever) shop brick and mortar stores any more due to abysmal selection and even more abysmal service. This could not be further from the case here, so when I tell you this place is brilliant that is pretty much an iron clad guarantee. If you are lucky you will stop by when the store mascot can say hi. :) read more

If you're into music - especially vinyl - then you need to make Sullivan's an addition to your "Must Visit" list. With the current vinyl boom you'll often find a lot of stores in other towns jacking up prices on used vinyl (even when it's in bad condition) because "that's what somebody paid for it on eBay." Not here...prices on used vinyl are reasonable and the selection is always good. If you are willing to dog through the stacks you are all but guaranteed to find that gem you've been looking for and you'll find it at a price that might make your jaw drop (in a good way.) On top of that, Sam (the owner & operator of Sullivan's) is a nice dude who is always more than happy to chew the fat about not just vinyl, but music in general. All in all, like I said at the beginning, Sullivan's should absolutely be on your "Must Visit" list. read more

I have been something of a regular at this record shop since they opened last year and they will always be my first stop when looking for a new piece of music to add to the collection. The owner/manager is laid back and friendly and I can tell by our numerous conversations that he is very knowledgeable and passionate about music. This store has always been there for me when I needed them and has a diverse selection of records and CDs that range from brand-spankin'-new to antique. They are also the only store in town that celebrates record store day properly with unique deals on one-of-a-kind items that you won't find anywhere else near Charleston. Sullivan's Records is the kind of store where if they asked me to mow their front lawn I totally would and I wouldn't ask for a tip. Good thing they don't have a front lawn... yet. read more

Literally the best record store I've been to. You'll find a vast selection of new and used CDs and records, great personalities running the store, and better prices than any record store I've been to. Other items include record players, used movies and TV, and some random oddities for the entertainment lover. This Store is a Godsend to Charleston WV. Not only is it 50 yards from where I work but It focuses on vinyl which is much needed. When you walk in a record store and see records.......its awesome.
