I've heard of Suki's before but never been - it's located at Burrard and Georgia with the entrance to the building between Tiffanys and Hermes. I came in to get a balayage done. Although I have been getting balayage done for over 5 years now, this was my first time giving this salon a shot. I had a junior stylist do my hair and she was patient and did a pretty good job. She was a tad slow, but speed is something that comes with practice. I'd give her a 3/5 - only because I was a bit uncertain if she was listening to what I wanted and if she would achieve the look I had asked for. She didn't get it perfect and some strands are much higher than I'd like and the color is lighter than what I asked for, but she did a good job still - she didn't make any major errors that made me want to cry.. The reason for the low rating is because I left the salon with my tshirt completely bleached in the back and ruined. I have never had this happen at any salon before and am appalled and disappointed. When I called the salon and asked what could be done, they said nothing - as expected. Disappointed by the mess they created and the lack of service in the end but what can you do. read more

My family and I went next door to that sushi place for a quick lunch, and upon walking out, my aunt suggested this place. Cris at the front was suuuper nice and suggested Lan for a color, and Simon for a cut. I just thought I was going to eat with my family and that's it, not book a major hair appt afterward! I almost had a heart attack with the price quotes. Eh, I guess I just have to brush it off because (1) my dad paid for it lol and (2) hair is just one of those things where "you get what you pay for." My hair is naturally dark brown/black, and I've been gradually trying to lighten the base and get highlights. Lan did a mini-consultation to go over what was real color on my head and what wasn't, and then off we went! Brownie points: I was recuperating from a really bad headache/migraine, so thank you Lan for letting me fall asleep and essentially knock out while you were working on my head. After that, in my sleepiness/grogginess, I went over to Simon to get my hair done. Before I knew it, I had a beautiful and shiny A-line bob. It looked so good, I thought I had a wig. Lan checked back on me and really liked how it came out too. The color looks good, but definitely didn't look "Asian blonde." (Hey, if you're one of those Asians that bleaches your hair and is offended by this, YOU SHOULD BE. Your hair turns out orange, not blonde, tis fug, and you make us all look bad. Shame on you). Price for an amazing cut, all over color & highlights, and a protein treatment: $300 But damn, I look good. read more

Senior stylist took my virgin hair, which had only been babylighted 6 months before, and instead of touching up the root growth with sparse, fine, bronde baby lights as discussed, I ended up with so many painted on highlights that my hair looks like a total bleach out. Brassy, orange-yellow hair and my hair is dead and curl pattern destroyed. Took the time to communicate desires from me (stay overall brunette, etc) and yet I ended up with this nightmare? Cost almost $400 dollars? Now I've had to visit another salon to colour correct and all the time it took to grow out healthy hair is destroyed. Would recommend no one go to this salon, how did a senior stylist do this???? read more

There are few things I am truly anal about, and I hate using that word if I have to at all, but my hair is one of those things. To be more exact, the handling of my hair by professionals is one of those things. I had one bad haircut 2 YEARS ago and I am still feeling the after-effects of Edward Scissorhands, otherwise known as a 'trained' hair stylist. Needless to say, I truly appreciate someone who knows how to cut hair and the skilled stylists at Suki's downtown are here to calm my frazzled nerves...and hair! The prices leave something to be desired but being female, I've come to deal with this slight inconvenience of a good cut, especially seeing the damage that can be done regardless of cost. Every cut I've had at Suki's has been accomplished and informative, each stylist, regardless of experience level (Senior Stylists demand more moolah but can be essential for more complicated styles) has helped me with my weak hair issues without pressuring me to purchase products. Suki's offers a plethora of stylists and hours of operation, 7 days a week, all in the comfort of a sleek setting overlooking the corner of Burrard and Georgia. They also have spa, up-do and colouring services for your convenience. Loves it! read more

I called two weeka ago to make an appointment but my regular hair colorist Rio is away on vacation for one month so I tried someone new (Tyeesha) because I really needed someone quicker before my bf's mom comes to visit this weekend! When I walked in Tyeesha assessed me and despite the fact that she was booked for a big appointment with me she recognized that my ombre touch up required less than more so she time-managed and flipped the schedule around with June who was to follow my color with a cut Big thank you to Rio for making my color low maintenance in the first place and to Tyeesha for keeping it real. June, I love the cut by the way I already knew that was going to be the highlight of the appointment because it was a big change! You guys and the team is awesome. Want to shout out to Antonio too because he wasn't available for my cut this time but he killed it last time and remembered me from six months ago and came up to me to say hi ~ Classy location and swanky interior design right in the heart of downtown Talent+Professionalism-Pretentiousness = Suki's read more

I have regular hair appts to color and cut my hair so not new to salon experiences and felt Suki's was professional and extremely accommodating -I came to Vancouver to visit my son and stayed much longer than originally planned- roots needed attention and hair a healthy cut-read reviews and decided to take a chance on Suki's Burrard and West Georgia location -color by Elisa who made sure I was 100% satisfied- had roots done, but just not "wow" until she suggested and adding some highlights (fitting me in between other clients) she was able to give me the color I was looking for - and the cut by Kye (a senior stylist) probably the best cut I have ever had for my fine, no body hair - she was able to make it move and appear "full"- All the staff from front desk to shampoo room were professional and attentive-prices are high, but I felt worth the price for the results- very happy- Thank you, Kye and Elisa read more

Bad haircut. Waste of money. The only hope is that they offer a 2 week window in which to fix it - but now it is far shorter than I wanted, so terrified of what I might get. Definitely asking for a different stylist to fix it - a more senior one, as this junior assured me it 'would be perfect' and instead it is somehow both uneven and boring. So much for 'best hair salon in Vancouver'. UPDATE: Natalya fixed it at no extra cost. My hair is now a good 3 inches shorter than I'd intended - a bob and not a lob. I honestly feel I should be better compensated for this, as it is a radically different style than what I'd asked for. The junior hairdresser (still $70/hour) was a disaster on so many levels - a liability to Suki's. My hair is now at least even and presentable... but I had to go in twice, pay for parking twice, and have the wrong cut. Suki's can do better. read more

The wash was good and the cut was not. I'm not sure if it was a communication/language problem but when I came in, I had long hair almost to the middle of my back and when I left, it was just pass my shoulders even though we had agreed on 2 inches. My stylist, June was nice and patient and I'm sure a very abled stylist but she didn't prepare me for such a big change. I had wanted just a trim and to blend the layers. I explained that I was going to a wedding that Sunday and wanted to make sure I had hair to cover my clavicle and as much of my chest as possible. I emphasized this using hand gestures repeatedly. During the consultation, she convinced me to take off 2 inches. However, as the cut progressed, she told me that she needed to take more off to blend the layers. She blamed it on my last cut which was 3-4 months ago and it was at Aveda so I'm sure it can't be that bad and I would have grown some length for her to play with. I was surprised that she didn't point out the faults of my prior cut during the consultation because I would have insisted on just a trim and then come back much later for a cut. Or, she could've trimmed the bottom layer and let the top layers to grow out. Whichever. Even after she flat ironed it, I could see about 1.5 inches gaping out from under the layers. It was a blunt cut with layers on top so it was a very obvious juxtaposition. It was like a mullet. She offered to do a re-do if at the end of the week I still didn't like it. Her idea was for me to grow it out for 3 months. I went home, washed it and hated it and went back the next day. I asked her to blend it so that the blunt bottom layer won't stick out like that. She ended up layering the top layers EVEN more, thereby needed to bring up the bottom layer! It was sooo frustrating that I bursted into tears. The last time I did that was when I was twelve. And the last time I had hair that length was in 8 years ago. I felt that June wasn't really listening to me and did some textbook cut. I don't know what she told the receptionist but I caught the receptionist comforting June as I was crying! I hate it at this awkward length where the hair either curls out or under, forming a bump as it hits the shoulder. What is the point of the consultation if what the client wants isn't taken into consideration? June suggested that I go and get some real hair extensions and that "it's time to try out a new style!" I didn't come in for a new style. This kind of experience is what made me stay away from stylists in the first place. I wasn't expecting this from Suki's. I just found a review on June - yes, same thing! I also did ask if this stylist was good with long hair when I called for an appointment and she did take a long time to do my hair which I'd thought initially was a good thing (being precise, etc) but maybe it's from inexperience. read more

My review is not for Sukis but one of the hairstylist's there Kyle Gould. I am very particular and my experience is that the standard of stylists in Vancouver is quite low. Added bonus, he is vibrant, funny and looks very like George Michael! read more

My stylist is Antonio. I feel so lucky to have finally found someone like Antonio that not only understands my hair but also can understand what is important to me. My first session with him was amazing. I was telling him how beautiful my sister's hair was and that I wish I had her curls and he told me that my hair was actually like hers but with the right cut. I could not believe it at first but I thought to give it a shot. He actually cut my hair (with a very fun technique btw) in a way that my natural curls came to live. He did not only cut my hair but he also went a step beyond and thought me how to style it. He also showed how to use the diffuser the right way as I was telling him how frustrating that tool was. I could not believe how amazing, professional and caring his service was! I left the salon feeling amazing, not only because of how professional and great my hair looked but also because thanks to Antonio I fell in love with my natural hair. This is a huge deal for me because I have always felt that my hair was not that great and now I love my natural hair. I am now getting compliments on my natural hair which never happened before. Thanks Antonio! I have now become a regular at Suki's. I will recommend Antonio to everyone. read more

I saw Antonio because after reading all the great reviews on him I felt like he'd be amazing and was excited to make an appointment with him. Just a heads up that if you do book with him be VERY VERY clear as to what you want. I thought I was, I showed him a picture, told him what products I use and specifically said I wanted a LOB (long bob) that I could mess up. I have very fine hair and it's wavy. I then specifically said I don't use a round brush to blow dry my hair and I never will, but he cut my hair in a way that it HAS to blown dry with a round brush. I've since gone to another stylists and explained and showed her what he did. She was shocked that he used thinning sheers on my already fine, thin hair and she notices that my ends are really wispy. I've been growing my hair out for the past 2 years and he cut it so short and choppy it looks like a helmet. Today is day 14 of wearing it in a ponytail because I HATE how it looks down. I'm choked I spent over $100 on this god awful haircut. I showed the stylist I saw the picture I showed Antonio and she said it looked nothing like the cut he gave me (I already knew that but it was nice to have someone else confirm it). She said he should NEVER have put thinning sheers to my hair because he took all the weight out of it and now it flips up and looks awful. I will not be going back to this shop. I am not the kind of person that goes back to the person that messes up to "fix" it because I don't trust them. I now have to spend another 2 years growing this crap out. I am sooooooooo disappointed!!!!!! read more

An appointment was made with a stylist, with the explanation that I can be fairly picky about my hair. I'm a guy, doing my hair isn't that hard, but some basic rules that most decent stylists can figure out. When my wife made the appointment the person on the phone assured her that the stylist would be experienced and capable of doing a men's cut. I arrived and was introduced to "June", who seemed nice enough but we did have some language issues as it took many times to explain to her what I was looking for. I'm not quiet about it. I brought pictures, and demonstrated where my neckline is trimmed, etc., etc. She began to work, without a word, and at first I thought the way she was cutting was to be precise, but it reminded me of someone who was at a hairdressing school. Sectioning my hair (which is short), constantly checking for length/balance... so I thought okay, she's just precise... Even though I provided pictures and a detailed explanation of the cut I was seeking (and this was a realistic style, not something impossible with my hair) - she didn't look at the pic again. at all. I told her that styling my hair with a blowdrier doesn't work - she blow dried it anyways. The cut wasn't remotely close, and the hairline in the back, after 3 attempts at getting her to fix it (looked like a mullet), almost 2 HOURS had passed....for a men's cut... ridiculous. Needless to say I was late back to work. Afterwards I spoke with someone who offered an appt. with another stylist but his comments was that he explained to my wife the differences between a junior and senior stylist (wife says he assured her of the stylist's experience with no mention of the level of experience) And, said that if I had been so demanding perhaps I should have booked a senior stylist in the first place - WTF?? OK then, well sir, for 55 bucks, I expect a stylist who can cut hair like they know what they are doing, and not like its their first day on the floor at the college. For an apparently "premium" place... the quality was more "fantastic sams"... My advice with this place is definitely pick a "senior stylist" and avoid the recommendations from the appointment makers who assured me that the stylist was excellent. Well... the person who had to fix my hair certainly didn't think so. read more

I have been going to Suki's South Granville for the last 3-4 years and will never replace it with any other salon. The overall service, cleanliness, and energy all contribute to the buzz in this salon and I can see why there are so many loyal clients over the years. Personally, I must point out that my hair consultant, Gwen, makes all the difference too, over and above what the salon has to offer. read more

I never thought I'd be comfortable regularly spending almost $100 on a haircut, but at this point I can't imagine letting anyone else cut my hair. I first started seeing Michelle when she was at the South Granville location. She came highly recommended by my best friend from high school, who had found her because she was especially good with curly hair. I don't have curly hair, but my friend (and her sister) had so much good to say about her, I had to try her out. Over the years I would pop in and see her occasionally when I came to Vancouver to visit, and always got a good cut. But it wasn't until I moved back and started seeing her regularly that things really turned fabulous. While I was away I'd finally found an average length that really suited me (quite short), and as a result I've basically been able let her loose to do whatever she wants. The result: each haircut is a little different from the last, and way cooler than anything I would ever have thought of. Having short hair herself, Michelle is as great with the short styles as she is with the curls. It's taken me an age to write this review, because I don't really want more people to start seeing Michelle. She's hard enough to get an appointment with as it is, between her popularity and her week-on week-off schedule (she teaches in the academy every other week). I decided it wasn't fair to keep her secret anymore, though. I just hope this review doesn't mean I have to switch hairdressers! read more

I used to always go to the location in Richmond which has since closed. I had an appointment with Wendy today, and she did an amazing job! She was professional and really easy to talk to. She gave me the pink I wanted, and today she did a really good ash blonde! the hair products she recommended to me were also such high quality, I can't wait to be going back to her again. My stylist was June. I ended up seeing her because Melissa wasn't available and I needed a cut asap. My hair is long, layered and at the time I was trying to grow it out and fix the butcher-job that a stylist from another salon did during my last cut. I explained that I was growing it out, wanted all of my split-ends taken care of, wanted the layers fixed and that I ALWAYS part my hair on the side. Basically she didn't listen to me at all. After the cut my hair was still full of split ends and she didn't fix the messed up layers at all. I tried to get her to fix it once but it still looked the same. To top it off she cut my hair so that it could be parted in the middle or on the side. I don't understand why anyone would do this if I make it crystal clear that I only wear my hair parted on the side. Anyone who wears their hair with a side part but got a cut for a middle/side part knows that it looks completely uneven. UGH! What an enormous waste of $100. I cannot believe that I paid for that. I will never again deviate from Melissa. She's expensive but meticulous and totally worth every penny. She is by far the best stylist I have ever used. She always takes into consideration my type of hair, how it sits naturally and most importantly what I want! If it wasn't for my negative experience with June would be leaving a 5 star review because of Melissa. read more

I'm sure my family and friends think I'm crazy coming all the way to Vancouver for a haircut, but after four years of trying to find a stylist I like closer to home, I threw in the towel and came back to the one I couldn't stop thinking about. Judy is so deliberate and precise in her craft, and I just love the end result. It sounds ridiculous, but I feel so polished that it makes me want to take better care of not just my hair, but my appearance in general. I also appreciate that she lets me be an introvert, so I can just enjoy the process instead of trying to come up with the next conversation topic. Even as someone who's relatively low maintenance, I have to concede that it's worth the commute and the price tag. read more

I know it's revered as a top salon in Vancouver but in my experience, it just wasn't that great. First, it's a bit impersonal. There's a different person to colour, wash, cut and then dry your hair. And the head massage I get at my local salon is way better, and longer. Second, it's very expensive for what turned out to be a very small amount of colour and a simple cut ($350). It didn't look any better or different than my neighbourhood place which is less than a quarter of the price. Afterwards, friends asked if Suki's was as great as people say and I said, meh. I wouldn't go again and I wouldn't recommend. Sorry! read more

I love Lan so much. She's the best if you want to go for the blonde highlights look. After a couple of "meh" hair experiences, I decided to splurge a bit on a more upscale place. I had read good reviews about Suki's, so I made an appointment. I wanted bayalage done and had a consultation with the colourist before my appointment. The location is beautiful and was bustling. My hair had some red tones in it, which I knew wouldn't be easy to remove. The colourist tried to convince me to part my hair in the middle. According to her, my side part was outdated. I agreed to let her move it closer to the middle. My hair was washed by a different person and I could hear the colourist complaining to another staff member about a customer while I was getting my scalp massage. My hair was cut by a different person. They did a pretty good job but the front layers were a bit too short (ironic that my side part was "outdated" but the mid-90s Jen Aniston layers are ok?) My hair was kinda orangey at the end and the highlights were very subtle. I was a bit disappointed considering how much I paid. When you pay, there isn't a percentage option on the machine, which is a bit annoying. Also, since three people worked on my hair I had to try to calculate the tip amount for each one. Overall, I don't think this place was worth the price. read more

Soari is my stylist. I have seen her since first meeting her in 1996 when Sukis had an underground location at Vancouver Centre. Previously, I had frequented the South Granville location for almost ten years with Margaret . I liked Margaret and the only reason I stopped going to see her was based on the fact that I moved to N Van. This is a subjective review but I am unabashedly a loyal customer. I have received many haircuts here and have had a number of different hair styles and cuts but the one common denominator is that I always look good. As a single woman , this was my go to place in the early 90's to get a fashionable and hot hair cut. As a 40 year old mom with 4 kids and a full time job, I still go here because Saori makes me look good and I do not spend a lot of time on my hair. Pluses Service is always great. Am always greeted by name and offered tea or coffee. Love the shampoo and head massages. Saori consults , then offers suggestions, listens to what I want and incorporates what I ask her to do. Since I have seen her for years, she suggests changes and I adopt them. Viola !!she makes me look trendy and young. Haircuts are carefully and meticulously performed. I like the professional atmosphere and have even bought my 10 year old daughter in to get a proper hair cut. Yes the hair cuts are pricey but worth every single penny, nickel dime, quarter etc..... Why ??? I always come out of this salon looking damn good!!! Saori is a senior stylist who teaches at the academy. I highly recommend her for asian hair styling and cuts. read more

I've been coming to Suki's Downtown for two years now, after stopping numerous women in Downtown Vancouver with good haircuts and being told that Antonio is their stylist. Getting my haircut with him is pricey, around $80+, but absolutely worth it. He takes his time, communicates effectively before attempting anything remotely "experimental" (bangs, layers, undercuts, different scissors, etc) and manages to experiment with my hair without pushing it into the realm of "bizarre" or requiring massive styling. I admit that I have been not so happy with two of the twenty of the haircuts that I have had from him...I felt they were too safe or slightly repetitive, but never badly executed. highly recommend for someone who is as particular about their hair as I am (!) read more

My haircut was a disaster. When I returned home from my appointment, I had to take matters into my own hands and "finish" my cut. I've been to 2 Suki's Salons for a total 5 times. 3 of those 5 my cuts were terrible. I felt embarrassed on the street. I am a woman in her mid-50's and while I could be wrong, I question whether ageism was a factor. Perhaps both stylists thought "the old lady" won't mind. My lesson, in the end: Suki's is not all it's cracked up to be. read more
