Okay. No. I feel like these reviewers went somewhere else.
I haven't signed onto this website in ages and I logged on just to leave a contrary review upon seeing these poor reviews.
No.
No, you guys.
This place was an awesome experience for me.
I hate salons.
I went in with a language barrier and a lot of fear.
I had a great time.
I went in relatively blind - I had done my research on Japanese Hair Straightening and, upon seeing most salons charge $400 as a base price, googled ".. where do japanese people get their hair done?" I went to the SOURCE.
Hive, the main location on Oak, was where it's at. And if the reviews on here dissuade you from going to this location, just head over there instead as the internet has spoken, Hive is half the price and awesome.
But I had a hell of a time, and I've been raving for days.
I....donn''ttt go to sallonnss. And it shows aha. I'm baffled by all things 'looking presentable'. So when I called in to inquire, the stylist had to walk me through the process and costs with damn near handholding. And there was a huge language barrier, but we made it work with laughter.
I showed up for my appointment last Thursday so early the salon wasn't even open yet and I was ushered in to the beautiful salon with smiles and laughter, given a drink menu and Pocky as I filled out a first-time survey about my haircare regime and preferences. My darling stylist (I cannot remember her name, but she has a long bob of auburn hair) came out and we hashed through what we wanted to do for my hair. I was quoted $220. $220!!! Half the price I found elsewhere. Awesome.
Huge language barrier. Huge. But we used smiles and hand actions to work our way through it and I decided to just breathe and let this woman do my hair.
I hope it wasn't awkward for her. I'm very smiley and friendly, and people always tell me it shows all over my face, but I am very shy and nervous, so I stayed mostly silent. I would just look up from time to time and smile at her in the mirror.
It was a 3 step process, and it required a lot of trust because we didn't/couldn't really talk about what was going to happen. I went in entirely blind, allowing her and her assistant to coat my roots in some chemical, let it sit, coat my whole head and then washed out (admittedly a littttlle roughly aha) and blowdry. At this point I was skeptical. My hair was blowdrying almost as huge and frizzy as usual and I was worried about it. But I just forced myself to breathe and let them work.
My hair was then flat ironed to high heaven. I'm talking an hour or more, with my THIN hair, of every little strand. And the results were mind-blowing. my hair was so unbelievably soft and shiny and I was practically bouncing in the chair. My stylist noticed my enthusiasm and kept laughing saying, "yes, it's very shiny."
After the flatiron, her assistant returned and they gooped up my head in a very thick, very cold gel before a final wash and blowdry.. and I. Had. Real. Hair. Not a frizzy lump. Real hair.
What I've gathered from the process is the first step releases the curl/frizz, the second step smooths it painstakingly into the shape we want and the third step seals it down.
And it's life-changing for someone with hair naturally like mine.
I was then handed a bill for $193. ONE HUNDRED AND NINETY-THREE DOLLARS. WHAT? Well, APPARENTLY, first visitors are given a 20% off discount.
I tipped that girl close to $60, hugged her really hard and skipped out the door.
SO HOW IS MY HAIR NOW?
Well, I didn't let her cut much off my hair, and some of it is really damaged so it didn't take on the pinstraight style as I was warned.. but that's GOOD. I have thin hair and I need the body. What I don't need is the frizz, and it air dries baby soft and frizzless. But if I were unhappy, the girls offered to redo it at a later date, no charge. They are happy to fix any mistakes/miscalculations.
This is life-changing for me. I'll edit in photos of my natural hair and the result later.
SO. There's a review to balance out the other reviews. read more
