I love this place. So friendly and gentle with delicious food as an added bonus! Quieter than their Headingley counterpart. We went for the mother's day buffet (we've been loads of other times too, but this particular occasion was very funny). My sister bought my 9 month old nephew in his thai outfit that he looked rather dashing in.... which ALL of the waitresses thought too, as he got paraded about and taken into the kitchens! needless to say, the little schmoozer loved it! Food was awesome with lots of vegetarian options. not sure if they do the buffet every Sunday, but if they do, I shall be back with reinforcements! If there was a comparison between this Sukhothai and the one in Headingley I'd struggle to give reasons for one over the other to be honest. As restaurants, both are beautifully decorated with Thailand themed decorations in golds and black, both have wonderful and lovely staff and both serve utterly delicious food. As I do with all Thai food, I always order the Gang Kiew Wan (I'm not being clever, I just order this dish a *lot*!) which is the Thai Green Curry. Sukhothai's version of this dish is as ever, mouth watering and delicious. I never feel over fed or bloated after dining here and it is always so reasonably priced for the experience. I guess in comparision to my other two favourite Gang Kiew Wans in Leeds, it doesn't quite have the flavour of Tampopos, and the restaurant doesn't quite have the panache of Chaophraya, but for the all in one price-food-quality-service, it is damn close. Definitely eat here if you love Thai food - it won't disappoint. read more

Visited a few weeks ago on a friday evening and after being greeted with plenty of warm smiles and a 'Sawatdee kah' we were shown to our table flanked by wooden carvings and exotic plants, we could have easily been in any of the up market restaurants you will find in Bangkok. Now me and my dining partner Gemma are some what self proclaimed experts on Thai food, having both visited Thailand and eaten at many Thai eateries. Not to mention taking part in our own personal cooking class with Mrs Ya of 'Gordon Ramsey's Great Escape'. For starters we ordered a Special Mixed Starter for 2 and a spicy Som Tum salad, a popular salad in Thailand consisting of shredded papaya, carrot, tomato, chilli, peanuts and dried shrimps (can be ordered without shrimp). Now I'm not a fan of seafood, but hardly noticed the shrimp, and the salad was delicious. The Special mixed starter was amazing, it was a mix of Tiger Prawns in batter, Chicken Satay, minced Chicken in filo parcels (tung thong) and chicken toast. We washed the plentiful starters down with a bottle of Chang beer each, Thailand's signature beer, and the only foreign beer I can drink in England and be instantly transported back to the sun drenched shores of southern Thailand. Next was the mains, I ordered my all time favourite Thai Curry, the Massaman, a curry that I had sampled in Koh Tao a few years ago, and had struggled to find anything that came close since. Gemma was a little braver and asked the waitress for her recommendation. She was advised to go for the Gang Ped Gai, a twist on the classic Thai red curry with Chicken, chilli and pineapple. My massaman was right up there with the one I first tasted on the little island of Koh Tao, delightful slivers of beef, meddled with chunks of melt in your mouth potato and carrot. Now I know that sounds more like a stew, but the cocunut milk and the subtle heat from the chilli brings it back to curry status, and I finished wanting more. Gemma's choice was impressively hot to say she ordered it medium spiced, but none the less was still wonderful, and again moorish. We both ordered a side of rice with our curries but the portions of rice are quite large, so one should do between two. We deliberated about ordering dessert as we were suitably stuffed, but thought what the hell, and shared a mango sticky rice. The rice was actually quite light, and the mango was so fresh and juicy, we polished it off in no time. Throughout the meal our glasses were refilled with water the moment they got half empty (or half full for the optimists) and the service was extremely attentive, even though the restaurant was packed. Overall our bill came to £65, which included 2 bottles of Chang beer each. Money well spent, and we will be heading back soon to try out more of their expansive menu. read more

Charming little Thai restaurant beautifully decorated giving a serene and peaceful zen atmosphere. Friendly and attentive staff dressed in traditional Thai costume which is always a bonus for me as I like to get a little insight into culture . Now to the most important part. THE FOOD!!!! I took the Tong cam special, beautifully presented on a 3 tier cakestand, consisting of very tasty vegetable spring rolls. However also fishcake, veg in batter and prawn toast, which unfortunately was bland and tasteless, may have tasted better with a rich dipping sauce. That needs a definate improvement. As for the main I chose Pad Thai, a chicken noodle dish with vegetables and peanuts which was absolutely fantastic, one of the best Ive had up to now. Very impressed with that, but overall a pleasant experience costing just under £20. read more

The original and the best...the latter part of this sentence may be a small lie as I haven't been to the new Headingly version of the award-winning restaurant and, as I have a small prejudice against restaurants in heavily populated student areas I am still more likely to go out of my way and head to the Chapel Allerton Sohkuthai rather than Headingly. Here's why; crammed with tasteful and enchanting Thai paraphernalia, courteous smile-full service and lip-smackingly tasty food that lives up to its reputation, I love the whole dinning experience of this restaurant. I love this place, I always want to come back here for more. But one thing I would change is the seating arrangements. This place is beautifully decorated and has me staring at everything longer than I know. Apart from a 50/50 chance of not getting a comfortable seat everything about this place is AMAZING! I am ashamed to admit my naivity in thinking that the Headingley branch of Sukhothai was the original. When I initially encountered the original branch, I was so very happy to see it tucked down a side street, all I could yelp and yap was 'OOOH THEY'VE GOT ANOTHER BRANCH HERE! CANWEGOCANWEGO!" Shame. On. Me. That aside, I did go. And I loved ever last second of it. I had the Thai Green Curry and savoured every last mouthfull. The flavours were magnificent, however, like Rowena, I struggle to compare the original with it's off-shoot in studentville. I think they are equally as great. If you are a fan of authentic Thai cuisine and good a restaurant with a great ambience and service in which to eat it, and even if you are a fan and are aware of the busier Headingley branch, why not try its original, and unlike me, actually recognise it as the original when you go! read more

Excellent food in probably the best Thai restaurant in Leeds nested down a side street in Chapel Allerton. Sometimes the service can be a little slow but it's more than compensated for by the professionalism and friendliness of all the staff. It is very tastefully decorated with impressive wooden carvings and is spotlessly clean. I have yet to have a bad meal there and the food has always been excellent. As a vegetarian there's stacks of choice and with a main course coming in around the £7/8 mark that's pretty impressive. Smart, friendly and welcoming it is one restaurant I never tire of using. Oh and their Happy Birthday celebration for the customers is both terrifying and brilliant. All in all a two course meal with drinks comes in around £40 so not cheap but great value for money. read more

We went here after hunting through reviews for a good Thai restaurant and they all seemed very positive so we thought we'd investigate. I rang in the afternoon and booked a table for the same evening. The lady on the phone was very friendly and said that they were pretty busy but could squeeze us in. It was pretty difficult to find, not knowing the area too well and the Sat Nav had a monster strop with the postcode and the one way system but it was well worth the effort! The restaurant itself is fairly small but they've managed to maximise the layout without making you feel too cramped or close to other tables. The decor is very traditional and although a little on the dark side because of all the wooden carvings, is very charming and comfortable. For starters we had sweetcorn fritters, vegetable spring roles and satay. The sweetcorn fritters were fabulous, my only slight quibble was that they weren't quite hot enough however I really enjoyed every bite. For many course we had a chicken pad thai, a sea bass and a salmon. Again, all beautifully cooked and presented very well. The service was extremely friendly and efficient and in total we paid just over £70 for 2 courses for 3 people, including a bottle of wine which was excellent value. The extra bonus was buying a cow shaped milk jug for £10 that I couldn't resist! All in all, a great restaurant, once of the best thai's I've had in the Leeds area and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone! read more

How can this only have one review?! This is the original (and best) Sukhothai in Chapel Allerton: I would happily claim it is the best Thai food I have ever had, not just in Leeds... The food is very reasonably priced and perfect for vegetarians/vegans, the staff are always well presented and polite, the atmosphere is perfect (there are a few themed decorations but nothing that would cause overkill) and in my 4 years of going there I have yet to have a bad meal...! If they are good enough for the Times they are good enough for the rest of us! read more

The worst place for Thai food in Leeds. Food was not delicious. The portion was tiny and very expensive. Avoid!

My favorite Thai restaurant ever! I tried both in Leeds,the food is absolutely authentic,the service is top class! The price is really reasonable. The staffs are very friendly.
