THIS IS WHAT KEYS LIVING IS ALL ABOUT…read more I've decided to post a couple outer sandbar Keys frequented by the locals, as it seems to be a recurring question that pops up by visitors. MARVIN KEY Longitude: -81.6445331 Latitude: 24.7115303 If you're wondering where all the locals disappear to on weekends, chances are if they know someone with a motor boat, they are at Marvin Key. This is a popular locals island and sandbar in the outback area off the lower Florida Keys. The only way to get here is by boat. Having had the opportunity to go here a few times already, it is absolute paradise. The sandbars are quite large around the island for walking, kayaking or just wading in the water with your beach chair and a beverage. You can also stroll along the shore with picture opportunities at every turn. Make sure you pack plenty of water, sunscreen, your noodles and even an umbrella if you plan on spending the day. It is not uncommon for waders to visit from boat to boat, so you just may meet some new friends along the way. The age range for visitors at Marvin Key is around 35 and up. The 35 and younger single crowd tend to migrate to Snipes Key which is in the general vicinity. Just like many of the other outback islands and sandbars around the Keys, knowing the area and navigation is crucial to avoid running aground, getting stuck, and most importantly, preventing damage to our reefs and ecosystem. If you choose to venture to this location, be sure to bring a local guide that knows the waters. We settled in and set off for the ride to Looe Coral reserve for snorkeling- 1st stop. We beat the crowds and secured the best tie off spot. We spent about an hour enjoying the below the surface life. We even swam with a sea turtle. The snorkeling was the best I've ever experienced, and I guess that's why Looe Key is one of the top ten worldwide snorkeling places listed in last month's issue of SCUBA. After capturing some kicking videos underwater with the GoPro, we climbed back aboard and headed out to the flats to check out a few sand bars. He picked a great spot, devoid of other fun seekers and after a beat we opted to head out for more touring. We went back into the mangroves and checked out the local sights. Cap'n Clint was so forthcoming with information and he is knowledgeable and so much fun! He has history here, and it shows. I hope to go again and I am definitely booking this for when my family comes to visit. Things spotted while boating: sea turtle diving, sting ray, some type of shark (No dolphins, . this time, but they're out there somewhere!) Things not spotted: other tours . Thank you Clint Moore for a great day- we will try for better than baloney on bread next time (bad on us)
