In an effort to kick off the new year on a positive note my fiancé and I decided to go away for a…read morecouple of nights the first weekend of 2021. After searching for dog friendly places in the New England area for a couple of hours we finally stumbled upon Pressey House in Oakland, ME on Airbnb. Neither of us had ever heard of the town but a quiet Bed & Breakfast on a lake sounded good to us. A few nights later we made the 3 hour drive to Oakland, ME where we checked into the Granite Suite. Originally we were a little dubious because the walls of the suite are described as being the original foundation of the home from 1850 so we were afraid that it might feel like we were in a dark, damp cave but when our Host, Nikki, showed us to where we were going to be staying nothing could have been further from the truth. Although all the of the walls were either granite or brick, the front of the suite was bright with natural light thanks to the window and door and the back of the suite with the comfy, King sized bed had a cozy feel to it. There are a couple of cool little brick arches in the suite that are a unique architectural feature. The bathroom was surprisingly roomy which you don't always find at a B&B and even though there is no bathtub the shower stall had excellent water pressure and didn't feel cramped . The suite also had a pretty good size kitchenette which was really handy to have the two nights we were there. My favorite feature though was the gas fireplace. Each night my fiancé and I spent hours in front of it playing cards and relaxing. It was especially welcome since it snowed while we were there, and nothing is better than coming in from the cold and warming up in front of the fire. There is WiFi available and our signal was strong enough that we experienced no internet issues on our phones and tablets. There is a main common area that was split into two sections: The front section which has a sitting area in front of a wood burning fireplace and the back section which overlooks the lake and functions as a dining space. The quintessential New England feel of the room is warm, inviting and really makes you think of the long history of the home. Although we were the only ones having breakfast each morning in the common area because everyone else was a long term rental, Nikki made sure that she still pulled out all the stops for us. One morning we had fruit salad, cinnamon rolls, homemade frittata, and sausage and then the next day we feasted on fruit salad, pancakes and homemade corned beef hash. The first night that we arrived Nikki had left homemade cookies in our room. The following day at breakfast she got some ideas of what kind of desserts we liked and we came back from a day exploring the area to some homemade strawberry thumbprint cookies in our room (which my fiancé LOVED). So, saying that Nikki is a good cook, who will feed you well feels like an understatement. Our most favorite part of the Pressey House though was Nikki, her husband Ron and their family (pups included). They were extremely friendly, professional, accommodating in every way and it's clear that they want every guest to have an amazing experience when you stay with them. From chatting with Nikki & Ron we learned that they have just recently purchased the inn and have some big plans for it. We can say with certainty that we will be going back for another visit and we look forward to seeing any improvements that they make since it will make an already fabulous B&B even better. We're also looking forward to getting to see the gorgeous lake that Pressey House sits on during the summertime.

We truly appreciated their hospitality and generosity. Waking up on that gorgeous lake in the warm summer, the kids running, jumping, kayaking, playing instead of being on their electronics was an incredible feeling. There was a variety of delicious restaurants & ice cream shoppes close by including vegan options that I of course indulged in. We can't wait to go back and enjoy this beautiful property again. Thank you so much, Danielle, Dom, Tristan, Cameron & Brandon xo

I was working on the coast of Maine and every hotel in the surrounding hour was booked and charging double and triple for their rooms between four and $600 each. I get it it's peak season in a wonderful tourist location. I was desperate for a place to stay thank the Lord I found blueberry fields B&B they didn't raise their prices for the season as they could do anyway, because of the amazing service, and experience they have on their property. Everything was neat, clean, peaceful, the property is stunning. The garden and the blueberry fields are amazing. The breakfast was fantastic and I love the fact that locals come to breakfast here that's how good it is. I am looking forward to working in this area again so I can come back here. In fact I think I would drive out of my way just to stay here because it was just that good. And to top it off, they have a ton of hummingbirds and they make their own maple syrup it doesn't get better than that people.!

We had dinner in the barn to celebrate a birthday. First course was a baked Brie in a pastry shell topped with blueberries and fresh apple slices - I could have eaten just that all night it was so good. Second course was a kale salad with feta and cranberries and a light vinaigrette - not my personal taste but it wasn't bad, and the kale lovers at the table said it was fantastic. Main course was a stuffed pork chop with dill potatoes and a butternut squash with brown sugar pecan topping. Everything was amazing. Thinking about it now my mouth is salivating. The gift shop had local handmade items that I couldn't help but load up on for gifts for my family and friends. I can't wait to go back. We were there from 5-9ish and time flew by. Highly recommend!

There is a perfectly manicured lawn which leads straight to the ocean. For me, this area holds particular significance as it is where I got engaged! The inn is reasonably close to Bar Harbor / Acadia as well as local wineries and hikes. I would definitely recommend Captain Nickels Inn to anyone looking for a classy getaway in Midcoast Maine.

Rooms are beautiful, beds are very comfortable, and there's a ton of indoor and outdoor common space. John and his staff were so nice (Jackie was out of town, but sounds like she's great too) and we and our friends instantly felt at home. It's well worth the price, which is very much on par with other places in the area that aren't nearly as beautiful, comprehensive, or welcoming. I added a photo from first thing in the morning. I got up, grabbed some coffee and homemade granola with yogurt and fresh fruit and went and sat on the deck overlooking the river. Such a great way to start the day. A little hint - when you call to book, don't be put off by how laid-back they are about the reservations. I don't think they asked for any money up-front to confirm or anything. Being 'city-folk', we found this a little scary, but they are on the ball. Don't worry! There's a lot to do in the area, too, if you like the outdoors - go down to Popham Beach and take a walk, visit Fort Popham, grab lunch or dinner at Spinney's, hike one of the many trails, bring a bike and tackle the windy, hilly Parker Hill Road, or pop into Bath if you want a little more (but not too much) action. We'll go back for sure. Would love to visit in another season.

It overlooked the water, and the early morning brought....SILENCE! Wonderful....no noise, little light...thus we snoozed for ages.....and did other things in complete privacy.....but none of that is your business!!!!! The breakfast time is flexible, the food served satisfying and fresh. We had fresh scrambled eggs with ham mixed in, started with greek yoghurt and fresh berries...but you could choose from many items. Now onto the tea.....being a fellow innkeeper (who's standards are demanding!!!!) and BRITISH....I am VERY demanding on my morning cuppa....and they delivered! The home is impressive and Phippsburg and Bath in general are not like Camden....over developed and touristy. You can cycle from their inn to Popham beach and fort...where there is a great restaurant, not fussy, serving fresh lobster (out of the tank in front of you!) and a plethora of other dishes. John & Jackie the innkeepers try to please in a quiet and relaxed way, are not over burdening, and take pride in their home....but do welcome one to use many parts of it. The setting overlooks the water and is next to a church....I could go on....but won't....just get yourselves booked in when you are 'doing' the Maine coast.
