Cary Launderette is one of those Laundromats that at first glance looks like time forgot. However…read moreif you have a thing for "vintage" places that really have not been updated since the '60s, and you want to play out your '60s bored housewife fantasy albeit with somewhat newer washing machines, then this is the perfect place for you. The folding tables are in those cotton candy colors so prevalent in the '60s, and the security camera from the time period makes you feel so secure as it points at the change machines making you wonder if it even works. Besides the vintage love fest, the reason why I drive well out of my way to wash my clothes here is because the prices are reasonable, there is ample room to fold, and the owner is very pleasant once he gets familiar with you. Most of the other Laundromats charge you 25c for 5 minutes of drying, but here it's 25c for 8 minutes. There are about four sizes of washing machines, ranging from home-sized, to industrial size machines good for bedding like comforters and duvets. The largest machine costs 18 quarters ($4.50), the next size down costs 14 quarters ($3.50), then 10 ($2.50). One caveat I have with this place are the newer "high efficiency" machines in the back. I once tried this because I wanted to use less energy in my wash, but the dispensing drawer leaked out my softener onto the floor when it being pours (the drawer pulls out to access), leaving my clothes stiff and still somewhat soiled (from normal wear). I usually do my laundry late in the afternoon, because the place gets crowded, and tend to end right as the Laundromat is closing up, so I get to see that the owner diligently wipe down the machines and clean out the gunk from the detergent and softener in the dispensing drawer. I mention this since I have been to many Laundromats where the dispensing drawer is horribly messy with other people's cheap detergent to the point where I wonder if it is clogged or not; this is not the case at Cary Laundromat where I have not seen any residue from years past. Another reason why I come here is because it is centrally located in the old downtown Cary which allows me to get something quick to eat while the clothes wash and/or dry as there are several worthwhile eateries within a five minute drive. I am very aware that most people would not give this place the time of day due to its décor and because it's right next to a pawn shop; however I have never once had any reason to feel unsafe here even after dark. I come here almost every weekend, so this place has my seal of approval.

Of the three larger washers available, only two reliably worked - the one in the middle had a sign saying not to hit it and just insert coins slowly. Spoiler alert: that doesn't work. The 50 lb dryer didn't work. The next larger dryer has a door being held closed with tape, that doesn't actually hold it closed. Several of the other regular dryers were in similar or worse shape, four of them missing doors entirely. In total there are currently as of this review the following machines available in working order. Speed Queen washers: 0/8 Largest continental washers: 2/3 Regular washers: 5/10 50 lb dryer: 0/1 30 lb dryer: 0/1 Regular dryers: 6/16 (2 of those barely) Also no laundry soap in the laundry vending machine or drinks in drink machine. Ended up having to run my mattress topper through several cycles before it fully dried. Between that, losing money to non working machines, and having to split laundry into multiple loads, thanks to the larger machines being down, spent far more time and money than should have been necessary. Only went for an emergency bedding laundry trip and will NOT be back. They get two stars SIMPLY because it's open 24 hrs and I didn't get mugged or harassed. That's it. Addendum: one of the reasons my mattress topper took so long to dry is the dryer it was in WASNT heating well. Took it out and put it in the one I'd used for my other bedding.
