I always thought it ironic that Jackson County, known for its many beef cattle farms, had not a…read moresingle restaurant that served good steaks. Southern Roots Bar and Grill proved me wrong. There is one, thriving in Malone in northern Jackson County. Like most older people, my wife and I usually eat our big meal of the day between 1 and 3 p.m. After I noticed that Southern Roots was now open on Saturdays for lunch, we had to try it. We were not disappointed. I had the filet and she had the fried steak. They were nothing short of excellent and actually, quite amazing. Only the best of ingredients were obviously used for both of our meals, and the place was more than half full at 1 p.m. on a Saturday. We talked with the owner after our meal, telling her how much we enjoyed our meals. It was readily apparent she loved cooking and that a lotta love is put into her meals. She told us she was thinking of opening on Sundays and I remarked, "Surely you need at least one day of rest!". She answered, "My husband is a farmer and works all the time, so I do too." Southern Roots is definitely one of the best kept secrets in Jackson County and you can be sure of one thing, we will be making the 26 mile round trip from Marianna to Malone a lot in the future. Count on us as regulars. I given hundreds of reviews and do not give five star reviews very often, but Southern Roots definitely deserves one.

From the drive through to the inside, but the service was still great, we were greeted upon entering, everyone was working fast to get the orders out, my cashier was very soft spoken and pleasant and smiled. The restaurant was clean and as guests left they were wiping down and restocking. My daughter had a kids meal that came with grilled cheese, fries, rice crispy treat and a drink she enjoyed all of it and she is very picky but no complaints, I had the wings & things that came with traditional bone in wings & chicken fingers and fries with the Zax sauce and ranch and it was delicious, we also ordered a side of lemon pepper wings that was so delicious, and we tried a vanilla milk shake that was thick like they should be and so refreshing! My visit after so many years did not disappoint! Everything was fresh and hot, Overall this was a good visit and will return again.

Brittney, the cashier that rung us up, is the ONLY reason I'm giving ANY stars. She was sweet and gave good suggestions. She also was the only front employee actually working. The other employees working the front were basically children that lacked the slightest bit of professionalism. One child was high and constantly lost his train of thought. Another was shooting her shot and holding up the line with a male customer. We waited about 20 mins for a salad with no lettuce and a order of fries with barely anything in the box.

Now hubby makes it a point to stop here regularly. It's our fave location OuiOui. We always order custom orders & they have always been great here. He likes extra pickles, moi like extra jalapeños etc., They take a little longer but we don't mind. As this location has a very cool "ramen bar" tiny seating area by the window lol. Yep, there is a tiny "Ramen bar" seating area for 2 by the window that faces the wall. Very Romantic. Especially when it's raining a Florida monsoon out OuiOui. They always bring us our order in the "Ramen bar corner" along with a tray of condiments. We thinks the service here is the Bomb. OuiOui. Anyhoo, we have never been thru the drive-thru, we always go inside, as we have usually been in the car for a while by the time we arrive. Every stop, the bathrooms have always been clean, service kind & friendly, food hot & fresh, served to us in our fave Tiny "Ramen bar booth" facing the wall haha. We think this Whataburger is super cute & very unique, that's why it's a regular stop for us. Now, please bring back the chicken fajita taco!! Ugh, miss moi little chicken taco!! Will return.

Unfortunately, this visit didn't live up to those memories. The service was surprisingly slow, and after the wait, the food arrived only lukewarm. I was expecting fresh, hot food considering the time it took to come out. The burger itself was pretty bland and lacked the flavor I remembered, while the fries were soggy rather than crispy. Overall, it was a disappointing experience and missed the mark on several levels. Hopefully this was just an off day, but based on this visit, I left underwhelmed.

The restaurant decor is vintage diner, like something out of a movie. It's super cute and the restaurant was very clean. We ordered fried cheese curds for an appetizer. This is typically served with marinara but we requested ranch dipping sauce instead. It tasted so good! We felt like we were at the fair. These are worth getting! Hubby ordered a steak burger with bacon with fries. The burger had a really good grilled flavor and the patty had a crust around the edges. It was delicious! Freddy's is going to be my 'burger place'. The shoestring fries were very good. I don't usually like shoestring fries but they do them right. I ordered the 3 piece chicken tenders with honey mustard dipping sauce with onion rings. I wasn't impressed with the chicken or the honey mustard. I ended up using bbq dipping sauce, which I never do, but it tasted the best with the chicken tenders The onion rings were pretty good. They offer several different dipping sauces. The ranch was the best one. None of the others worked well with any of the food we ordered. Hubby had root beer to drink and said it tasted good. The unsweetened tea was refreshing on a hot day. We wish we'd have had room for dessert. Maybe next time. There WILL be a next time! I'm already looking forward to a burger
