Inky's Philly Cheesesteak in Easley, SC, delivers a fantastic take on a regional favorite…read more Located at the base of The Silos--where several food trucks ply their specialties--Inky's stands out as a spacious, comfortable spot with large booths that invite you to settle in... and maybe stay a while. High ceiling, lots of wood paneling, very vintage while still feeling up to date. The menu includes burgers, deli-style hoagies, and salads, but let's be honest: the cheesesteak is why you showed up--and it's good enough to keep you coming back. There's some real history behind the name. Albert "Inky" Harris ran the first cheesesteak and hoagie shop in Philadelphia back in the 1940s, and the current grandchildren owners carry that legacy forward. Whether every detail has been perfectly preserved or lovingly remembered, one thing is certain: they source their white American cheese from Philly, and the result feels authentic. And that makes all the difference. The fresh-baked Liscio's rolls are huge--soft and warm on the inside, with a firm, crusty on the outside. Like me... on a good day. Inside, finely chopped steak, peppers, onions, and that perfectly melted white American cheese are blended together, so every bite delivers a balanced, satisfying hit of flavor. No "all onions in one bite, no meat in the next" surprises--just consistent harmony. And the star of the show? Certified Angus ribeye. No shortcuts. No skimping. No regrets. Sandwiches come in 7", 12", or the "I wish I was still in college" 18" option--because sometimes restraint is overrated. My wife and I split the Colossal. The meals are served on trendy paper-toppped metsl trays. The staff and management go out of their way to make you feel welcome and walk you through all the options. Sides round out the experience with plenty of choices: fries, tater tots, onion rings, pasta salad, fried mushrooms (hello, childhood), and a standout option--house-made chips, sliced and fried fresh and disappearing faster than your willpower. Bottom line: If you're craving a true Philly-style cheesesteak without leaving the Upstate, Inky's is absolutely worth the stop. Just don't plan on eating light... or sharing. Marketing is a fickle, mostly futile endeavor, in my opinion. Here is the scenario: You are…read morewatching Billy The Exterminator on A&E with your family. After Billy finishes wresting a rabid squirrel from the extremely small crawl space of a trailer in Palatka, FL, the commercial break ensues. You see Timmy with Jason Voorhies and Sons Ford, Chevy, Honda and Kia pitching a "nearly new" 1998 Honda Civic Hatchback for the unbeatable Price of $2999. Their catchphrase "All our wheels give you the feels!" gives you pause. But let's face it, when have you said to yourself "You know, my 2016 Lexus SUV just isn't cutting it. It's too big and is a gas guzzler. I will run down to Jason Voorhies and Sons and I will downsize to that Civic!" The answer: NEVER! With my feelings on marketing now evident, let me discuss Hardee's. Although marketing has as much impact on me as does the numerous selfies of Kylie Kardashian, Ariel Winter, and J Lo's Ass, there is that 1% when my attention is grabbed and I succumb to the clever pitches of the multi-national conglomerates (Burger King chicken fries anyone?). There I was, minding my own business, watching Law and Order SVU, when a scruffy sailor and his first mate appear on my tv, battling a 300ft rogue wave in their rusted out junk boat. The captain, with his fervor and excitement for grilled chicken amidst the daunting circumstances ensconcing him, spoke to me on a personal level. I made it my duty to try his Charbroiled Hawaiian Chicken sandwich at my earliest convenience. Here I sit in Hardee's with the sandwich in my hand, and I feel like shooting a hole in the captains boat and watching him drown amongst the hammerhead sharks and Man-O-War jellyfish. He is dead to me! This sandwich stinks! It's all soggy and wet from too much sweet teriyaki sauce. The onion actually tastes like celery, which I despise with all my heart (if you like celery, you, too, are dead to me). The chicken had some good flavor but the sandwich was a complete disaster. After eating the Burger King chicken fries, I felt like I had participated in an eating contest with the food of choice being buckets of used grease. My stomach was in tatters for hours. This sandwich has left me feeling much the same: shameful, undignified, and downright dirty. I bought in to the marketing, and I hate myself. Stick to the burgers captain! Leave my chicken alone :(
