All around unpleasant experience. Their business model is borderline unethical and revolves around tank rental fees and delivery fees, not the sale of propane.
The nicest thing I can say about Suburban propane is that their staff are pleasant, and they sound exasperated trying to explain their processes and make excuses for the company they work for.
We are very light users of propane, so for the last two years we have not taken delivery of any propane. Despite not receiving any propane we are charged $137.47 as a minimum bill, which includes $10 for transportation fuel surcharge. The minimum bill is on top of the $100 per year tank rental fee.
They are also charging us a late fee for a bill we never received. We didn't expect a bill because we didn't receive any propane, and by the time we received a bill it was late, apparently.
I just cancelled my service because I am tired of this headache, and they are charging us $150 for tank pickup, and said they will refund us $1 per pound for the propane left in the tank. At this point I just want to end our business with them, and I hate to waste the money, but I just need them to go away.
After closing my account and turning off auto pay suburban propane added more fees to my account. They never sent a bill, but they sent my account to collections. I logged on to find that after closing my account they added an additional $235.39 to my account. Why you ask? Well, in addition to the $150 early termination fee that I expected, they added an additional $160.13 Close Out Fee, plus $42.59 to restock the propane remaining in my tank, and $10.03 for transporting the tank. They want to make sure that former customers NEVER come back. Mission accomplished.
I cannot recommend this business to anyone. Go buy a tank and take it to Ace Hardware to have it filled. Save yourself the time, money, and frustration. read more
