I wrote my original review of Suburban 7 years ago. My kids continue to swim on Suburban's recreational and AAU swim teams. The director of aquatics, John does a great job providing a positive environment for the kids. Because of John, the program continues to grow and gain success. The AAU swim program is a recent addition, which allows kids who are looking to swim a little more seriously get an extra opportunity to swim an extra day and also swim longer distances than the rec team. Beyond this, there is a pre-comp program for kids interested in swimming on the team, but not quite ready and a good lessons program. I will admit the first impressions of the club could turn people away, the facility is dated and run down, but the pool is very well maintained, kept at a reasonable temperature and the pool itself is well maintained and clean. I would tell folks to give it a chance. My kids have made life-long friends and have had a great time swimming on the team over the past 9-10 years. read more

I would not use Suburban as a regular health club for machines and classes. You can find somewhere a lot nicer for less money. However, their aquatic program for kids is a amazing. Definitely the best instructors and smallest classes around for the best price. Their outdoor pool is also really nice and worth the membership cost in the summer. read more

This place has just been our worst experience ever in the metrowest area. We initially thought we would let our kid take a first class and judge based on the experience. The first experience was bad. The pool was cold in winter, the instructor seemed fixated on providing instructions for one specific kid, as we watched other kids just idling around. The people in charge of enrolling seemed to just not respond to our emails and we were also not told that once we take the first class there was no way we could get back our program fee. My kid absolutely hated it and there was no way we were going back, but we were never given a refund. They just stopped responding to any email from us, and it looked like once they had our money, we were 'done' They are on to scam the next customer. read more

This place is awful. I did not even use the gym itself (though the previous reviewer was right: the machines are ancient, dirty, often not working at all). I only use the gym for classes (pilates, yoga, spinning, kickboxing). The class schedule was pretty limited compared to all other area gyms I checked out before making the switch to Gold's. But regardless of what the printed class schedule says, you have about a 50/50 chance of the instructors ever showing up for their classes. When they do show up, some are okay, others are extremely unqualified. Particularly with yoga and pilates, their classes were a joke. I'm now a member of Gold's. I pay $20 less per month than I did at Suburban and have never once experienced a cancelled class and the instructors range from good to absolutely amazing. Don't waste your money here! read more

My son took swimming lessons here. Cost was reasonable but I guess I figured out why. The place is extremely run down, to the point where there was a door halfway off of its hinges being held up by a bench. Not safe. Also, on our first lesson there the girl at the desk couldn't be bothered to put Facebook on pause and greet us. I had to tell her it was my first time and didn't know where to go / what I needed to do. She pointed down the hall to direct us- thanks. The pool itself, was pretty cold. The smaller children were shivering in the pool and their lips were turning blue. Not a good intro for the little ones into the water. The swim instructor, was very nice. She was great actually, she was very friendly, and the only reason I didn't give 1 star - or zero if I had the option. Won't be back. read more

I completely agree with Susan. I got free pass too and gym is clumsy and crowded and the lay out is disaster, old machines, clumsy free weights area and u at time get lost as where to go. On top of that they charge $84 a month which is a lotttttttttt. Gyms which are better then this charge no more then 40$. This gym sucks compare to what they charge. read more

I will never step into this place again. I paid quite a bit of money for our son to take swimming lessons there then saw a coupon at the place for a first time member. I asked Debbie if I could apply it and she told me no - that I needed to tell her about it as I was signing him up. (I didn't know about it.) She could have offered it to me as I spoke to her when signing him up. He missed one class so I wanted him to make it up. I was told there is a $5.00 charge for it. That is absurd as I've never had to pay for a make up class anywhere else. The pool and facility is so run down and dirty. The water is cold and some instructors not so friendly or good about welcoming the child/parent and giving feedback. It was a big waste of money. read more

My two preschool aged children attend this center and love their teachers and have learned a tremendous amount this year. There is a true family atmosphere to this place and my kids love it! read more

Facility is run down. I don't know how they have a child care facility there. It is dirty and children are often yelled at and soiled. They clearly are trying to make a buck and don't care about customer satisfaction. Think twice before sending your child there! read more

My kids have been on the Suburban Sharks swim team for three years now and took swim lessons at suburban before that. The swim team has been through a few different swim coaches in the past few years but the current coaches are great. I'm quite happy with the instruction and overall team experience my kids are getting. The price is also reasonable. However I'm only giving three stars because the facility is extremely rundown, outdated, and in many places not clean. Parking is also limited and they have historically done a poor job of clearing the parking lots and salting/sanding walkways after snowstorms. read more

My son has had 6 lessons, and we have had to change our schedule 3 times. Two of those times were due to scheduling issues on their end (teacher changed schedule, last minute cancellation of a class before we even started). When I brought my sons to pool for a lesson they conveniently told me the facility is closed. Would it be better if anyone have told me?? Since then postpone lessons twice and no one has shown up. I called the main office twice and after demanding money back, was scheduled make up for missed 2 lessons in one day. At our second visit the instructor wasn't here and nobody knew what was going on or who the instructor was supposed to be. What horrible service. How can you let people schedule lessons and have no accountability when the instructor doesn't show? I chose this place because it was convenient and offered the hours I need. But I feel like my sons isn't learning anything anymore, and we can't even get a teacher to show. Ridiculous! This place needs major administrative help. I've had so many issues - class canceling without notice, Manager telling me different things regarding scheduling for a private lesson, teacher changing schedule and no longer being available for our lesson (and again, not being notified). Whenever I call them, I get the runaround. The instructors were friendly, but disorganized. read more

Worst place ever!!! Don't believe the HYPE, it is always dirty, smelly the equipment is old. The pools are so dirty. The staff only cares about money, they won't go out of there way to help you. My family left Suburban after catching the life guard sleeping during the children's swim class. This was the second life guard we had to report to the aquatics administration in a 6-week period of time. Do not believe that your children are safe in their pool. read more

So I'm new to the area. Live in a western suburb of Boston. Thanks to unemployment I have the time to scour the area's gyms and take advantage of trial memberships if offered. I don't require a huge space, just a varied selection of current equipment, a clean locker room for a shower and a bike with one of those built-in heart rate monitors. I obtained a 14 day pass for this club from the web and you can gauge my satisfaction with SAC by the fact that I worked out here once and won't be returning, even though it's FREE. The area for the machines is very cramped, but most importantly, the equipment is VERY old and outdated. I'm sure it's at least 8 years old, perhaps 10, an eternity in club years, given advancements in technology. The area for free weights is downstairs and much more spacious, but again, the equipment is nowhere near current. The locker room was extremely chilly yet clean enough, but had an overwhelming odor - perhaps disinfectant? The rug was damp, the showers sketchy (with no supplied bath towels). The club opened in 1971 and I wouldn't be surprised if it hasn't been renovated since then based on the pale pink lockers juxtaposed with the blue rug. There was a decent array of treadmills and recumbent bikes along with two upright bikes - one with my desired HR monitor handlebars. There is a very active racquetball community, plus an indoor pool which I can't address. If weight machines are your desired form of weight bearing exercise I'd advise you to look elsewhere. read more

I've been a member at Suburban for the past year. I'm moving in a couple months and had to terminate my membership and I couldn't be more upset. The main reason I signed up was because I'm a swimmer and there were no pools in the area that i could go and get a good workout in without sharing a lane. I'll admit that at first I was skeptical of the gym becuase its set back from the road and looks like an abandoned warehouse of sorts. I couldn't have been more wrong. I've never had to share a lane in the pool, the locker rooms are always clean and the staff is extremely friendly and helpful. I've expanded my workout routine to the cardio and weightlifing machines and again, I've never had to wait in line and the same familiar faces are there everyday, and always go out of their way to say hello and greet you. They just got new bikes and eliptical machines and while not huge, the space is more than accomodating. I'm moving about a half hour away and I was still tempted to keep my membership because it has by far been the best gym I've belonged to. read more

We had a horrible experience with swim lessons here for my 3 year old daughters, who almost drowned and would have had my husband and I not been watching them like hawks. In a class with 3 students, the instructor more than once took 1 student about 20 yards away from the other 2 (who were standing on a platform in the pool without swimmies on). She had her back to the other 2 students and the lifeguard on duty was busy on his iPad. Not once, but twice, each of my daughters fell off the platform unattended and went under the water. We jumped up and started screaming for someone to help. Had we not been there, no one would have noticed that they had fallen off the platform and who knows how long they would have been under the water. At the end of the class, the instructor very aggressively told us that our daughters were terribly behaved and didn't follow instructions and would not be able to participate again unless they could be better listeners. Her tone was defensive and at the moment, both of our girls were crying and were incredibly scared. She was very obviously trying to shift blame to 3 year old girls when both she and the lifeguard in duty had been negligent and careless. Even had our daughters been terrible listeners, the risk that a 3 year old could fall or slip off the swim platform is significant enough that there should either be 2 instructors in the pool for a class for children that age, and there is no excuse for the inattentive lifeguard. When we called to withdraw from the class, inform management of the incident, and request a refund, we were told that they had been waiting for our call, that their instructors were not at fault and that they don't issue refunds. I am not at all complaining about the lack of refund; it would have been the courteous thing to do given our terrible experience, but it was the indifference shown to our girls and the complete lack of concern over the fact that they very well may have drowned during a swimming lesson because of their staff's negligence. I would hate for anyone else or their children to have a similar experience and would advise you to look elsewhere for swim lessons. At a minimum, NEVER leave your children during a swim lesson at suburban athletic club, even for less than a a minute, as a tragedy could occur. read more

You'll be lucky if you or your children make it out alive the director is a penny pinching beep who's as fake as the day is light. She is a Psych major so knows exactly what to say. Parents are over charged it's insane. DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILDREN THERE. They hire from Craigslist and let people start working before CORIs come back. Children are left on busses teachers are under paid and administration is real sketchy. Plus they cover up so much that is prob why they charge so much. Yep if you don't believe me just go check it out yourself. It's gross and unsafe......my children went there for all of one day. My baby came home with a funky rash, my preschool child said she was yelled at for not falling asleep, and my older children said the chill age teachers were on their phones the whole time even not noticing a fight between two kids.....yep I wouldn't expect them to be open much longer because I've filed a formal repot and will probably end up sueing for the rash and the fact that they won't refund my money. keep your child away from this place....i had my then 3 year old son in day care and only 1 teacher was very nice with my son (laura)...but then got a new teacher and a really bad one (tamika) ...my son told me 1 time the teacher was hitting him...i though he was making it up until one day i went to pick him up early the lights in the class room was off i see the teacher yelling and hitting my son then she saw me as i got to the side of the door to open it i immideatly left with my son called the cops then the next day the manager storms right at me and said why i called the cops?? after a long chat with her all she did was suspend the teacher for a week! come on now! keep in mind many teachers do this and always tell the kids not to say anything or else...another teacher (sara) always yelling at the kids! aweful! keep in mind that the classrooms are always dirty they dont clean the toys, carpet or rugs never washed, and you have to provide your own lunch for the child. read more
