Yes, this location of Sub Pop is located in the SEA-TAC airport, but it's a totally rad store! The prices are higher than they should be, but it's a really neat place to grab a unique souvenir of your visit to Seattle. In addition to awesome vinyl records, they have band t-shirts, books, stickers, guitar picks, enamel pins, and other music merch. This is a great place to pick up a gift for a hard to please music lover. I mean, they even had adorable Nirvana onesies for infants! What rocker wouldn't love something like that for their kid? The original Sub Pop logos are really awesome as well, with eye-catching graphic designs and fun colors. The prices are what you'd expect for a store located in an airport, but they aren't totally crazy. I priced out a few of their double vinyl sets, and they were only marked up anywhere from $5 - $8. This isn't a boring airport shop, which I appreciate. In fact, SEA-TAC has some of the most unique (and best) shopping at any major airport, anywhere. Many airports are crap. LAX and Newark come to mind as particularly large-scale offenders. Not only is the overall experience bad but the food options are all really terrible and overpriced, and more damning, there really isn't much present in them to communicate the overall culture of their local city. So not only has Seatac become a rather nice, smaller-scale exception to typical airports (N Gates used to be Siberia and now are unquestionable the most interesting gates of the airport) but for a decade now, right in the middle of the airport, everyone gets to walk by (and hopefully frequent) the exceptional Sub Pop flagship store. There a few better love letters to the bygone culture of a city than this store. This may be one of the best displays of local flavor in an airport in the United States. It's run by Sub Pop, Sub Pop have taken great care to both present their catalog and merchandise in the best light possible, and because of that it has a presentation of class while still maintaining it's scrappy underground roots. Yes, there is plenty of NIrvana merch here but there's lot of modern stuff too like Beach House, underscoring that Sub Pop isn't a "grunge" label but rather a company dedicated to exciting independent sounds and culture. Seriously it's one of the best representations of a city in their respective airport that I can think of. So so good. read more

Wanted to walk on by. Like I've done each previous time before. I grew up in Seattle. SubPop wasn't something ever destined for a storefront in an airport. Wow. But well, the success that ignited during a truly grim and probable end times moment surely made for a strange alchemy. Talk about lead into gold legends. As I write this I'm reminded of a factor that's largely if not nearly universally part of the unknown history in the music industry, and particularly how it's roots are deeply embedded in Nirvana and what played out in a short blink decades ago. I refer merely to Gold Mountain. That's not what this about. Just including it as a fitting tie in. Seeing SubPop the first time in SeaTac year back I couldn't brink myself to enter. I grew up in the greatest city on earth back then all the artists who had there music on the label worked either at SubPop or Muzak. Also Tower Records or Peaches or any of a million other crappier places. Back in 1987 I think I first bought a soundgarden ep on cassette. fopp. Or Screaming Life. Can't recall which. Though I still have the tape at home somewhere. But after eventually digitizing all those tapes I can't recall where they might be. In 1997 I became an employee of Muzak. A systems designer. This was oddly also related to my becoming good friends with Hank Harrison, author and onetime manager of The Dead. More often recognized as Courtney Loves' estranged father and some crazy times. That too is an entirely other story. Did you know her mommy is also famous? Did you know she came from great wealth? Bet not. An heiress. Again, a story that has another time and place. To SUBPOP. Damn this place is cool. I bought a few CDs I never knew even made it to print. Mostly music I bought 30+ years ago, on tape. Artists who in one case I saw live before fame. Another who touched fame, but wasn't fully allowed in. But toured briefly with the BIG SHOW. I wish I'd have bought a few Ts. I love t shirts. I'm too old for that stuff, but I disregard such silliness. I wear ties at places I don't want to be. My wife wants me to wear them more. I might. Maybe next time I fly, I'll wear a tie and stop in to SubPop looking like an exec and pretend I'm a tourist and buy some replacement clothing for the ling gone real relics I wore into tatters. read more

I get so tired of the boring airport gift shops. You know the kind-they sell magnets, overpriced t-shirts and candy. Land yourself in any airport and you'll see the same stuff with a local label slapped on to it. But not here in Seattle! I was looking for something unique to take home to my 16 year old son and was absolutely delighted to find the Sub Pop Records store. They carry an assortment of vinyl records, cassettes, clothing and books. Sure, the prices are higher than you would probably find elsewhere. But that's your punishment for not finding a souvenir to take home before you flew back. Oh, wait, maybe that's just me. Punishment accepted. read more

With a connecting flight through SEA/TAC recently, I knew I could stop by the SUB POP shop for some memories and coffee. FRESH POTS! I was old enough to Live Through This era of music the first time around, so the t-shirts scream Hot Topic teen that also has that one Ramones seal shirt. Don't judge me! Kurt would probably feel the same now. But I loved browsing through the books, and records (buy Rogue Wave "Descended Like Vultures", buy JAILL from Milwaukee, buy Colleen Green on their Hardly Art imprint label). They had some nice artwork and branded tchotchkes. But the only thing I ever buy here is the excellent Black Vinyl (whole bean) coffee by Lighthouse Roasters. Damn. Music shop IN the airport?! Leave it to Seattle and Sub-Pop Records to make it happen! Sub-Pop Records is the label behind musical talents such as Flight of the Concords, Nirvana, Sleater-Kinney, Soundgarden, and MANY more! It's undeniable to miss their impact on the grunge music scene. So needless to say when I had a layover at Sea-Tac, I had to check it out! ++ They sell a WIDE variety of merch ranging from cds, vinyls, dvds, books, apparel, etc... I chose a fun little magnet to bring home with me. ++ Employees greeted me and were very friendly during my visit. They didn't even tease me about how long it took me to choose between a magnet and keychain. Do you hear that sound? Those angry, mumbly vocals? Those nihilistic, angst-filled lyrics? That heavy, pounding bass and drums? Those distorted electric guitars? Well, they're being drowned out by the sound of cash registers. It's really the sound of the death of my generation. Yup, grunge has gone corporate. Well, maybe it went corporate ages ago. All I know is I'd never thought I'd ever see the ultimate Alt-label with a store in an airport. All the shamefulness is there. All that overpriced vinyl and cassettes so you can pretend that you're retro. The flannel I used to pay $6.50 for is now $65. The tongue-in-cheek smartass kids books are here. There's their "sustainable" charcoal and oils soaps for the price I'd pay for a 10-pack of Dial. There's a jewelry case with stuff no grunge fan could have afforded back in the day. I mean, they have a friggin Sub-Pop onesies and plush toys, for the love of all things holy! I can't totally begrudge (or, I guess, beGRUNGE) the store. I mean, they are still, at least in part, a record store. If you're looking for the big bands of the era (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, etc.) they're all here. Super cool airport shop. Wow. This was a great surprise as I needed cool Seattle souvenirs for a couple of teens! Scored two great Sub Pop tee-shirts, really soft and high-quality, plus some vinyl Sub Pop decals. I would have picked up a few records too but my carry-on was already full. It's cool to have a Sub Pop outpost at Sea-Tac, especially selling vinyl. What isn't cool is the $7.00+tax for 45 singles and $21.00+tax for Flight of the Conchords LP....bit spendy, yunno? Anyway, I did it.....happy to have done so, but still feel a bit queasy about it...kinda like eating Burger King....and won't do it again. This little spot just opened up in Sea-Tac, and it's a really ingenious place for this store. Perhaps more ingenious is strategically placing all the Nirvana happy face shirts on the table right up front for travellers and tourists to see. The inside of the store is clean and sleek. Well designed with much of the "gift" items out front but some music in a little corner in the back. What I will say this store has going for it is definitely the gift-item factor. Whether you're a Seattle native or flying in for a bit of tourism, this store will definitely have something worth picking up for that 20-something (or maybe 30-something yearning for the days of the mid 90's). Any music fan will appreciate that "gift from Seattle in the form of either a flying fish from the market or a Nirvana shirt" the latter smells a bit less. There are lots of items with the "Sub-Pop" logo on it; shirts, drinking glasses, etc. As well as a handful of other popular bands on the label. Great location for last minute gifts or maybe that little gift for yourself. The prices are a little bit high, so I wouldn't use this location as a place to "shop" but it's a great spot for that last minute gift for a music lover. read more

I'd forgotten that Sub Pop had opened a gift shop in the SeaTac airport until I just recently went on a trip and got a chance to check it out. I think our Seattle airport has better-than-average shopportunities for travelers, and this store is a fine addition to the selection. Even if you're not a Sub Pop music fan, it's worth checking this shop out for its cute postcards, art prints, and Seattle-themed stuff with a more tasteful twist. Of course, this store is primarily for Sub Pop stuff, so front and center you'll find CDs and records, T-shirts and hats, and music-themed books. The record selection is quite large and vinyl lovers should definitely take a look -- the stock includes comedy and spoken-word stuff as well as Sub Pop's own albums. In addition, you'll find some stylish/edgy jewelry (though it's expensive), cute pouches and bags, a range of very nice and artsy Seattle and Washington art prints and cards, and local Theo chocolate and snacks. Prices are a little high, but if you need a last-minute gift or souvenir and want to avoid the awful tourist junk, you can find some very respectable presents that don't even look like they came from the airport! And everyone who visits Seattle should try Theo chocolate before they leave. I have been dying to go to a Sub Pop Records store for a long time now. The previous locations that were in Seattle are no longer open... only the one in the airport still exists. And if you are not flying somewhere then it is unlikely you can get past security to go check out this store. Being a middle aged Gen-X'er I actually do have an old Sub Pop t- shirt from the 90's...I think it dates all the way back to when I was in high school. Basically living in Wyoming is living under a rock and still remains so BUT I still knew what Sub Pop was back then. I wasn't disappointed when I went into the store. The music selection consists of a considerable amount of vinyl which isn't too surprising but they had new cassette tapes as well! Wow! And then of course CD's too. Going through the selection took me back to bands that I used to hear about, used to listen to and in some cases still do. Going beyond that there were even some bands and musicians that had albums that I never was aware of until now. There was lots of interesting books for sale here as well covering various bands and musicians...obviously Nirvana was one too. Since I went to Sub Pop BEFORE actually going on my actual trip back to Denver I decided not to buy too much stuff to lug around with and got another Sub Pop t-shirt, this one where the graphics were in a sparkly gold. Very satisfying for the t-shirt hoarder in me. That's another thing I can check off my bucket list to go see...and I didn't even leave yet on the airplane to my destination! Lol! Whenever I have time to kill at the airport waiting for a flight I will definitely pop back in here to look at the merchandise some more...which I will probably will wind up buying something else. Never heard of the label prior to walking in. Saw BOH & wanted to buy a gift for my husband. Long story short, walked up to the cash wrap... Ben was so knowledgeable it was impressive. In service, especially at the airport, I don't have high expectations... but when you are assisted by someone so knowledgeable and passionate it prompts you to take the time to acknowledge it. Considering Sub Pop's iconic punk rock history, a company store inside of a major international airport ... well, I'm still trying to reconcile that in my mind. Of course, Sub Pop as a punk record label and iconic institution of the Seattle underground music scene is obviously just a historical anecdote now. It's all mainstream!!!1 PUNK IS DEAD!!1! Still, considering Sub Pop's considerable fingerprint on Seattle cultural history, it is cool to see a company store that proudly celebrates that legacy. Even if it is in the airport. It's a nice, well-kept store -- as you'd expect an airport store to be and has various selections from Sub Pop's grunge past as well as their current roster and other current indie artists as well. I was surprised to see as much Pearl Jam-related goods in there, considering Pearl Jam's history with Sub Pop, but I guess as long as it's Seattle, it's all good. When you think of iconic, city aligned punk record labels of the past, I think of Sub Pop and Seattle, SST and LA, Matador and NYC, and so on. It's weird to see Sub Pop so cleaned up and nice now, but I guess that's what age will do to you. read more

Well, as far as Airport Record Stores go, this one is as good as it gets! Sub Pop records has had a crazy and long history that you can fully explore in this shop. They have just about every record they ever released here, including 7 inches and singles. Books,posters, some really cool T-shirts and sweatshirts. This is a must for any true music fan. Plenty of stuff to check out if you have some time to kill. Lucky for my wife we only had 20 minutes so all I got was record slip cover. I could have easily spent an hour or two more snooping around if our flight had not been moved earlier. Oh well, another reason to return to Seattle. read more

Let me start by giving a little background. I work in cosmetics and run a retail store in the mall. I've been a trainer and manager for almost 18 years. That being said i was super excited to visit Sub Pop Records for the first time. I'm a fan of too many bands to list. I was in Seattle for the Pearl Jam shows which was a bucket list dream. I also attended the sub pop anniversary concert. It was beautiful. One of the things important on my list was to get to the airport super early even though we were exhausted because I had to see this store. I had a list of things i wanted to buy and so many things i wanted to look at. Store was beautiful. Had at least 10 people in it at all times for the hour i spent there. Not overly crowded. My husband was purchasing some items and i wasn't done shopping. So i told him to get his stuff and if keep looking and get mine. At this point I'd been in the store an hour. I'm a respectful shopper and planned to throw down some serious cash. Not one person greeted me or asked if i needed help and they were not too busy. Remember this is what i do for a living. I know the difference. My husband asked if they had any of a particular poster displayed left and the associate was very rude about it. " are you kidding me" you think we would have any left after all these Pearl Jam crazies came through". Trying to defuse the situation i chimed in and said oh he just though he would try you never know. Sometimes companies stock up when they know a certain client demand will surge. He just dismissed us in a rude way. So i said " I'm sorry you must of been really busy with all the PJ people in town thankfully it's Sunday and most are headed home". Huge mistake. The guy starts having a meltdown... like just short of crying it seemed. " said don't get me started they have been assholes. Worst people. It's been awful. (Lots of deep breaths and putting his head down and really showing distress. I said " oh no, I'm so sorry. Eddie bedders #1 rule is don't be an asshole". Trying to make light of it. He continues to melt down. Very uncomfortable. I ask if he is ok he says he just can't go there it's been way too much. He is glad we are all leaving. Sooner the better. Now I'm in the store with no less then 10 pj fans respectfully browsing and purchasing from what i could tell he did nothing but ring the sales. Never assisted anyone with anything. I was very excited to get a shirt and sweater. The sweater looked amazing and i was so excited. My hubby felt very weird and i sent him off to find seats at our gate because i was gonna but my stuff but also a bday present ahead of time i could hide. I asked if i could slip the zipper hoody on to make sure it fits. He had a huge attitude and said i don't think it's going too. Go ahead though and just leave a mess for me to clean like all the rest of you. Ok so I'm slightly overweight and my jaw hit the floor. This was all too much. I regretfully hung my stuff back up and walked out the door. I really wanted that stuff and i love your label and the bands but this dude either needs way more training, went through some kind of traumatic experience or was just plain awful. I have managed multiple locations and up to 50 employees at a time. If i saw my employees act like this is terminate immediately. I hate for someone to loose their job but wow this was bad. This is the face of your company. My 150+ sale you lost may not seem like a big deal but how many of these are you missing. The guy had blonde hair just above the shoulders i think. Working early Sunday morning 8/12. I'm still pissed at him because i really wanted that stuff and he ruined my experience. My husband like i said Did purchase a few things. So if you want to track the transaction his name is Steven Mccallum and it was sometime before 9am. Thought you should know. When I'm cold this winter I'll think of that stupid guy and how i loves that sweater. Lol Hope this helps you improve your store. I would want to know. read more

Being a music nerd, I was stoked to run into this store when waiting for my flight. I was a DJ in college and we played a bunch of music from Sub Pop (Fleet Foxes, Beach House, Wolf Parade, Iron & Wine just to name a few). It was fun to looks through all the CDs and vinyl records. Too bad I didn't have more space in my carry on, I would of bought something. There were clothes, and books about the artists...even a listening station! While it feels weird to review an airport shop, I have three frickin' hours to kill and that cheese place is swamped. So: kudos to Seattle for having something actually cool in your airport! Stuff I'd actually want to buy! Some stuff I did! Some stuff I might go back for for lack of anything else to look at or due in this horrifically crowded terminal!
