Used CHEAP stuff. SECOND: It was not even the color I wanted. It was much DARKER than the bright red brown that I asked for! THIRD: PISSED ME off the Most.... I have never been in a salon for 4 HOURS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! before and yet the outcome is awful. I was sitting there for 4 HOURS!!!!! totally neglected!!!! And it wasn't even busy! The place was playing cheap bad music and the people there were UNPROFESSIONAL!!!!!!!! FOURTH: When I told the guy how I wanted my hair to be cut... he actually told me how it should be cut. And I'M THE ONE LIVING WITH IT. Totally DID NOT do as I asked. I told him that I worked in the office, looking at the monitor all day and I don't want my bangs to be too long ABOVE my eyebrows would've been fine. But the guy actually told me that "NO, just put gel in my hair to hold it up".... I even told him that I don't put chemicals in my hair but he told me "you should start".... WTF, he does NOT listen to the peoples needs. I'm stuck sitting at work as we speak with a hair pin on my head because my bangs are in the way. UGH!!!!!!!!! FIFTH: And for the service and outcome. It cost me $115 and $10 tips. Total $125. I didn't want to make a scene but it was the worst experience ever. And way over priced. I mean, if i liked the outcome. $125 is nothing. After 3 years and maybe 20 haircuts here, it's time for a [long overdue] review. Lemme begin by dropping some names, Elson, Kelly, Kid, Eco, Boy, Nicole, and of course, Alex. It was 3-4 yrs ago when I got bombarded with a stylist's name one summer. A family member, a friend, and even another salon all told me to check out Sub-Image... that there'd be someone there that can cut my hair wonderfully. Oh yeah? How many times have I cried after a haircut? How many times have YOU gotten upset leaving the salon with your new do? That is no more, my friend. I've brought colleagues, family, friends, and boyfriend to get haircuts, dye jobs, and styling done on various occasions. Kelly is very meticulous and sweet. Kid teaches you how to style your hair after he cuts it. Elson is quite safe and reserved, for those of you who wish not to look too "out there". Boy whipped up a wicked style job for my friend's Halloween makeup. And Nicole seems to have a knack with men styles. As other reviews have mentioned, their shampoo job is the best in town. So prep yourself for a good wash & massage. Don't come if you're in a rush, and don't try to skip out on it by washing at home first, that's my best advice to you. Tip generously! To maximize your experience, it'd be best to bring a picture of your desired style. Or you can leave it up to the imagination of your stylist, but do be specific with any requests. They are very good at following directions as long as you are crystal clear about it. One thing I would like to say to Sub-Image is that everything you do is great, but your dye job has been chancy. I can't say I love it all the time, which makes me want to get the cut here, but dye somewhere else. Hopefully you guys can train your dye team better* P.S. I am so fucking mad I asked for a natural black purple look because i wanted a subtle FUCKING color. What do i end up with. I end up with a bright ass blue hair like i came out of a fucking anime I spent 7 hours in the salon, they ruined the texture of my hair, not only NOT giving me what i want, but making me extremely late for my destination. I'm too embarrassed to even leave my house and extremely disgusted and frustrated at my new hair I SPECIFICALLY told them that i had work and bright colors are not allowed at work. THIS REVIEW IS SPECIFICALLY ON MANDY. I've been holding off making this review for some time now. Partially because I didn't know how I should feel about the whole experience. My hair is naturally black but I had dyed it light brown with a blonde ombre a couple months prior to my visit. I wanted to go back to a darker color so I stopped in Sub Image on a Sunday afternoon. This wasn't my first time at Sub-Image. I've colored my hair here before and was very happy with the results. However, this was the first time Mandy was in charge of my coloring. I told her in the beginning that I wanted a warm orange based color, which she agreed would look nice. The final outcome of my hair was not the warm orange we agreed on but a dark red. It was very very obvious that it red. I literally asked another worker what he thought about my hair and he said that it was a nice red color on me. Not going to lie, I liked the red as well. However, when I brought up to Mandy that my hair was red, she insisted it was orange. LOL, does she think I'm colored blind or something? The funniest part, was when another hairdresser (who has previously cut my hair before) was walking by, I noticed he had a similar hair color to my newly dyed hair. I joked that we have the same red color now. Mandy stepped in and said "no it's orange", then glared at the guy to not make a comment. Then, she kept pushing for me to get a cut. I had just trimmed my hair 2 weeks ago so I wasn't in a need of one. She ended up going ahead with it anyways, cutting less than a quarter inch off my hair. She charged me full price for the color and the haircut. It just irritated me that even after she messed up my hair color, she kept trying to insist she was correct and THEN sell me a hair cut i didn't need. I paid for the bill without complaint because the hair color wasn't bad. I even tipped her pretty well because she did need to spend some time to even out the ombre. However, I dont understand how everyone on Yelp likes Mandy. She has the worst attitude out of everyone I've worked with there. I came into Sub-Image 2 months later with my sister, we made eye contact, I smiled at her and she continued to give her normal stank face. Stay away from Mandy. read more

I went two weeks ago to dye my hair. Nicole did a terrible job because she simply did not listen to what I wanted. I gave her a photo and said "like this but a little more natural and darker." It was a photo that was reddish purple but my hair came out bluish purple and way too bright. Not only did she rush me when I tried explaining what I wanted, but afterwards, she said that the hair would change colors to the shade I wanted after a few washes. It went more blue than red: totally opposite so clearly she lied to get me out asap. On top of that, she messed up the dye job. I had blonde bleached bits (pretty wide) next to my roots so that as my hair grows, it'd be black (natural color), blonde (bleached part that obviously should've been dyed), and purple. I went back to get it fixed and she was rude to me once again. Even raised her voice a little. Finally, switched to another stylist who agreed to fix the roots for me free. He was great but it still means that I spent almost $300 for a color that I did not ask for. The salon even fought back and tried to charge me $50 for the product to fix their own screwup. Nope. Ridiculous and a waste of time to have to go back in the first place. read more

First off, I just have to say that the receptionist is rude, rude, rude! I've been to Sub-Image 4 times so far and it seems every time I go she gets more rude. I've always paid $30 + tips for my cut and I've always just gotten a trim because I like my hair long. I was there this past Sat (btw, Kelly did an amazing job in half the time the other stylists took) and was charged $40 + tips. I didn't mind paying a little more since I was super happy with the way my hair came out but I just had to ask why the price was higher. My response: "Your hair is extra long, we charge more for extra long hair, ok lady?" When I tried to explain that my hair has always been this length and I've always gotten the same trim, she looked at me like I was a liar and said, "no way lady." Yea, rude. Its a shame because I really like the place. I've never waited more than 5 mins and most of the hairwashers and other staff are friendly. The place is trendy and always clean. The cuts always come out nice and I've tried out 3 different stylists already. But I think this past experience is the last straw and I won't be going back. Oh, and I've always loved the shampoo and conditioner that they use. If anybody knows what it is I would appreciate it if you could let me know. I asked the receptionist the first time that I was there if they sold it since I was interested in purchasing it. "No" was the answer. I then asked if she could tell me what brand it was. "No" again. I called ahead to ask what the price of a haircut is. I was told $35 for long hair. I went into the salon and asked the lady at the front desk (exact words in mandarin), "Are haircuts $35?". She said, "Yes $35 for long hair". For reference, my hair is about chest length. Got my hair cut. It turned out fine. Not great but not bad either. It was the end of the day -- maybe my stylist was tired? I'll give the benefit of a doubt. So then I went to the front desk and they handed me the bill for $38. When I asked why it wasn't $35 the lady said, "It's because you have long hair". I pointed out that I was told it was going to be $35 and she responded, "No, we said it's $35 more or less". That's definitely not the wording they used beforehand and I don't know why they couldn't have just said that in the first place... it was jarring how they were so polite at first and then got all snippy when it came time to pay. It's only a few extra bucks and the cut was decent, but I absolutely hate leaving a place feeling like I've been misled. I'm sure the stylists are solid but business practices like this bug me. If they didn't do this I'd likely go back to try another stylist mentioned in these other positive reviews. oh and PS -- There's also an extra charge for using credit cards which they didn't mention when I asked if they're accepted. I could've initially walked across the street to the bank if they just told me when I asked. Though to be honest this probably wouldn't have bothered me much if the incident above didn't happen. Been coming to Sub-Image on and off for about a decade now and I've never had a bad haircut here. No matter if it's a stylist I requested many times in a row or a random one who I see once and never again, I can always trust them to give me decent trim at the very least. I've tried other, more buzzy salons in Flushing with varying results, but in the end, I still come back here at least once a year to get my hair fixed up. read more

Since I'm Asian I tend to go straight to the Asian salons to get my hair done because I noticed they do have more experience with Asian hair than regular salons. I went all the way from Manhattan to Flushing to get my haircut. My usual salon was closed that day, so I tried out this Salon. The price they charged for a regular trim for my bf was way too high imo $100. For me I wanted a perm and a trim. She cut my hair first which came out absolutely horrible. She gave me one layer on top that came to the middle of my ears, then the second layer was to the top of my shoulders with no transition layers in between. It took them over 2 hours and 3 people to do my perm after the cut. Immediately after the perming was done, they had someone wash my hair with shampoo and everything. I've had a couple of perms before and I'm pretty sure they're not suppose to wash it out for 24 hours. That whole ordeal cost me around $120 not including tips. A day after I got home, my perm was already limp, uneven, and extremely dried up. My hair looked so horribly damaged I had to wear a hat for at least 3 months after. My bf vowed to never take me to flushing for haircuts again. read more

Do you need a hair cut but don't know which to choose? I highly recommend Sub-Image and concur with the other reviewers all the way! The beauty salon is a huge space, located on the 2nd floor, right on Main Street! Very clean & trendy. Busy on Sat & Suns. Expect to wait 20-30 mins if you don't have an appointment. A lot of people recommend Paul - my friend got hers cut by him and it looked great afterwards! He did a really good job. Cuts start at $25 for short hair, $28 for long hair. If you're one of those who regularly go to Japanese hair salons in Manhattan, I say don't waste your money. read more

Hair cut was great. Bad thing is front desk receptionist is very rude, just because I am not Asian doesn't mean I don't understand what your saying in Chinese. I came in with no appointment. I understand if someone else has an appointment they have the right to go ahead of me even if I waited a half hour, but multiple customers clearly said they had no appointment and I was skipped. That's ok maybe she's a little forgetful. I reminded her of my presence. After that, another walk-in went before me. Still not my real issue. When she turns to the other girl says "give the white girl the stupid/slow one" that pisses me off. Hairstylist was a young girl very pleasant took her time to make it perfect. I got the perfect bob back in January 2010 from Paul. Up until that point, I only received haircuts from female hairdressers. But with the new year and all, I decided to be more adventurous and try out a male hairdresser. One of my BEST. Decisions. Ever. It was a rainy Saturday and I walked in asking if there were any open slots for me. Lucky me, I was getting my hair washed within 5 minutes of arriving at the salon. I also brought with me a picture of Heidi Klum when she had a bob and asked Paul if he can cut my hair to look like Heidi's. Snip, snip, snip 1.5 hour later (which is the longest I've sat on my butt for a haircut), Paul transformed my limp treads into the cutest bob ever. His attention to detail, including snipping at hairs I couldn't even see through the mirror, was a good surprise. $45 after tip, I swear my bob gave me enough pizzazz to out-catwalk Heidi Klum. Thanks, Paul! P.S. This was also the most expensive haircut I've paid for, hence 1 star was taken off. I came here today after getting my hair messed up at another hair salon in Flushing. The staff was very nice and professional. I got my hair cut by "Boy" who spoke fluent English b/c he's from Malaysia. He asked me some questions about how I style my hair and how I prefer my hair to look. He also waited patiently while I picked out a style from one of their Japanese hair magazines. The hair cut he gave me was similar to the one shown in the book and he also managed to fix my bangs so that they look much better than yesterday. I also got my hair washed by Jojo and she gave me a head massage. The shampoo smells great! Overall, I would definitely recommend this place. I used to absolutely hate my hair. It's the type of hair that is completely unobedient to what you want it to do. It's straight when I want it curly, curly when I want it straight, frizzy in the summer...UGH. Convinced that I would get a nice cheap haircut on a trip to the Philippines, I decided to lop off my long hair and try out a more contemporary look. ....Disaster. Dreading my return to work after a long vacation looking like a pageboy, I Yelped hair salons in New York and came across Sub-Image. Learning that Mandy was a magician with short hair, I decided to take a risk and see if she could salvage what hair I had left. And salvage she did! I absolutely LOVED my new short haircut, carefully layered, trimmed and sprayed. She showed me the best (and quickest) way to style it....I didn't even have to suffer one Facebook photo of shame! Now, I can't see myself going anywhere else. I make an appointment at Sub-Image, sit in the chair, enjoy a relaxing hair wash, and leave my hair in my capable stylist's hands. Sub-Image is definitely better compared to the other Chinese salons in Flushing, but it really depends on which stylist you get. Do your research and ask for recommendations, because you will want to cry and rip your hair out if you get the wrong person! I've had more "okay" experiences than "wow" ones here, but most of the time I get what I ask for. My hair is medium length, and the cuts are $35 for me without tip. I got a young woman with side swept bangs as a stylist once, and I remember wanting to cry after that cut. She cut my bangs way too short and it looked uneven. I just wanted a trim for my bangs, and even emphasized to her that I didn't want it cut too short so I was absolutely baffled. I didn't catch her name and didn't bother to ask after the cut, but I knew enough to avoid her at all cost!! Avoid the chick with the side swept bangs people!!! Following that bad experience, I looked up some reviews on this place and found Boy to be a popular choice among yelpers. He's great. He's so nice, friendly and is attentive to detail. The first time he cut my hair, I was very satisfied. The 2nd time, he cut my bangs too short :( but I'd go to him again. He's probably one of the busier stylists there, so make an appointment in advance! The receptionist could be friendlier. She's never smiling and doesn't have a great vibe about her. A few years ago I was looking for a new asian salon to hit up, which I hope was in Jersey, but to my surprise every time I searched "asian hair salon" NYC locations came up. So, I scrolled through yelp and came across Sub Image. At the time Yelp was a little young and not that many reviews for sub-image, but I went for the gamble since a majority of the reviews were 3 stars and up. A lot of the reviewers suggested I make an appointment and let me tell you, make an appointment, especially if you're going on a Saturday or Sunday. I got paired up with Boy the first time I went and I have stuck with him for about a year now. He never disappoints me. I mean he spent over an hour on a my hair (which wasn't long at all). I mean an hour? And for a guy? How much more detail can you go? He's your guy if you're a guy...guys haha. I pay $25+tip for my cut. I mean if I'm driving an hour away I might as well. The prices may be a little steep, but not bad at all for what you get, which in my experiences have always turned out good, so no complaints from me. Bottom Line: If you live in the area you should definitely try out Sub Image. The place is pretty modern, upbeat music, and very good service (that speaks english too). There are plenty of hair dressers to go with. If you live far like I do, this place is worth a try if you weren't satisfied with your previous cut. Update: I also recommend Ice. I wanted to make an appointment with Boy, but he wasn't in that day. I read some reviews from my fellow yelpers and went ahead and made an appointment with Ice. I did not have the greatest idea of how I wanted my hair. She told me that she would cut it to one length and ask whether it was okay or not and then go on from there. This is the first time anyone has ever done this approach when cutting my hair. Two thumbs up again! Ice also spent quite a long time with my hair and anyone who can spend almost an hour is pretty good in my book. This place really knocked my socks off! I have never had that much attention paid to my hair, and the thing is, I wasn't really expecting it. I called them at 4:30PM today and the receptionist was nice and said I could walk in, but its better to make an appointment. So I said I could be there at 5:30PM. I show a bit late because traffic in Flushing is always a mess, no matter what time of the day. I arrive at 5:45PM. The place is packed. There are 4 other people waiting before me. I think to myself, oh great. I will have to wait, and I had to be somewhere at 7PM. So as the clock ticks, I wait patiently. After 15 minutes, someone approaches me and we are ready to get started. I had just washed my hair, and didn't want my hair washed again. They were nice about it, but they found it to be weird. Oh well, I am the client, I get to make the rules. So after a quick rinse, I am ready for my cut. Paul, my hair stylist, doesn't introduce himself, but he does ask if I am in a rush. I tell him I need to be somewhere by 7PM. In any case, I tell him that I want a trim and also I wanted him to take some of the weight off. My hair is getting long and needs to be thinned. Also, I wanted my bangs trimmed. He was complacent with all my requests. Paul is very detail oriented. He may be a bit obsessive, but thats good for me. He really took the time to layer my hair. I have very straight Asian hair, and he asked if I would like to curl it. I said sure. I don't do it often, but I like it. So, he uses a flat iron and curls my hair! I am in awe. Wait...the flat iron is supposed to flatten my hair?? Oh wait! Paul is also a magician! He said that the idea came out of Thailand. Kewl. He made me look fabulous ;-) Now I am going to go out and buy a flat iron to repeat the look! The place gets 4 stars because Paul lost track of time. He didn't seem to care that I needed to be somewhere by 7PM. He was meticulous to the end. He wanted a good finished product. I was paired with Kid the first time I went to Sub-Image two years ago, and I've been loyal ever since. The first time I went I was going really short from really long hair so needless to say, I was a little nervous. But Kid talked to me about the cut before he started so that I would know what to expect, and it came out exactly how I wanted it: a funky angled bob. The thing I really like about Kid is that he took into consideration the natural way my hair fell and the fact that I'm super low maintenance when it comes to my hair. He's always very meticulous when he cuts, spending the time to do everything right. Now that I'm growing my hair back out, whenever I go in for a trim, I just have to tell Kid that I'm growing my hair out and he knows what to do. It's so nice to have a hair stylist that I can trust to give me the cut I want. He also takes the time to style my hair after he cuts it so I always leave Sub-Image feeling like a million bucks. The best part is I've never paid over $60 for a wash, cut, styling AND including tip! So far I've introduced 3 friends to Sub-Image and they've all been really happy with their cuts. Don't worry if you don't speak Chinese; most of the hairstylists at Sub-Image can speak English, Mandarin, and Cantonese. They're cool with walk-ins, but to get the stylist you want you should definitely make an appointment. I highly recommend Kid, especially if you want something short and funky. read more

Amazing haircut. Amazing service. I'm so happy with my look. Best of all, it wasn't expensive ($35) and this is the first time where my hair doesn't flip out all over the place after the initial haircut/blowdrying session. I got Boy, who was patient and friendly. He listened to what I wanted (an asymmetrical, choppy layered cut), and gave his input when I was unsure whether or not to get side bangs (his verdict: no bangs-- it wouldn't suit my face shape, nor the cut). Boy was a great conversationalist and his friendly, relaxed attitude helped me adjust well, as this was my first time at Sub-Image. He also taught me how to style my hair at home so that I could take care of it. My hair is straight but very coarse, so it tends to get frizzy with numerous flyaways. It is thanks to Boy I now know to use pomade! Sad, yes, but better late than never. read more

JUST got my hair cut an hour ago! I wanted real bangs (not side bangs) and I was definitely feeling a little nervous about it. *Especially since I didn't make an appointment, I didn't know who I was going to get. Also, the front desk asked me if I spoke chinese, which made me even more nervous since I don't speak anything that well. But within 2 mins, a cute girl with a mini skirt on, washed/massaged my hair for like 15 mins. It was amazing. Then my hairstylist, with her cool purple hair and a clubbing outfit on, came over speaking english. I showed her a picture of the type of bangs I wanted. Her first question was "Have you had bangs before?" And I told her I kinda did a couple of years ago, but they weren't a big deal. So she told me she was going to cut a little first and then if I felt okay with it, she would make the bangs thicker. HOW CONSIDERATE!! And even though I got a trim 2 months ago, my hair still felt dry, so I told her to cut all my split ends off. And she did a great job. All scissor work! (No thinning blade!) So at the end I told her I wanted my bangs a millimeter shorter, and she did it. She taught me not to side sweep my bangs to the side although its the natural thing to do, and to ruffle them from the roots instead, and I love it! I asked for her name, Nicole, and she gave me her business card. I paid $38 for my haircut, a little more expensive than I'm used to. But totally worth it! The bangs are going to take a while to get used to it. But my hair feels soooo soft and looks great. I will be coming back :) And they play great music! read more

This review is long overdue. I have been going to Mandy for nearly a decade. There is good reason why I've never changed stylists. She knows exactly what to do with my thick, long and dry hair, especially in the summer. Over time she has taken the time to understand how my hair reacts with different treatments and coloring and adjusts accordingly. Mandy is always honest and tells me if something will or will not work before we begin. I appreciate her work ethic - always dependable and accommodating with my crazy schedule. This is a review from an Asian guy with average length hair. No particular style. Well what can I say. Its 25 bucks for a wash/massage, cut, rinse, gel routine. I've been here 4-5 times and each time I get a different barber. It really depends on what barber you get. Some take longer than others but they always deliver. Thing is, this place work in Asian efficiency. It's an in-and-out place so the people there don't really make you feel very special. Who cares. I don't sit on the couch and think "hmm this is a lovely day I think I'll relax at the salon." I'm a dude... I cut my hair when I need to. I want to get it over with and get it done well so I can go back to the lovelier things in life. If you're an Asian dude who wants a pretty nice, trendy haircut from trendy-looking barbers with anime haircuts, just come here. It's a cheap place with good enough quality to set itself apart from the 6-8 dollar haircuts you get at other cheap Chinese salons. Sub-Image is a popular place! It's always packed on the weekends, so if you have time during you weekday-- i would suggest going then. I recently started working here because my hair stylist, Eco, came here from Fancy Wave Salon. Eco is awesome. He always listens and he's very detail oriented whenever he cuts my hair. This place had better days.... When it first opened (or opened for not too long), I could walk in and just get any stylist not afraid of my hair getting messed up - most stylists were skillful back then. I guess a lot of the stylists got enough clients or popularity and most of them aren't there anymore. Therefore, I'm definitely more careful with who cuts my hair now. My favourite is Mandy - she's very skillful, helpful and careful. She's probably the best stylist I've visited throughout my life. The reason being that she trims your hair making sure it will still look good as time passes and as hair grows. I specifically remember one time when I ask her to cut my bangs, after I suggested the length, she hesitated and asked me if I really wanted my bangs this short. Then I come to realized (for some reason) I had (idiotically) point my finger too high up on my bangs, suggesting I want a very short bang. However I find her hair dyeing skill isn't as strong as her cutting skill. Besides Mandy, Kid is also a good stylist to go to. He's also patient and he listens to what you want (very important for a stylist). If you are not looking to style but just to trim, Boyd (or Boy) is ok. As for Kelly who has been pretty popular in Sub-Image... I find her alright but she needs to be more professional (i,e, don't talk about other customers to your assistant when you're doing a customer's hair and don't not tell me what I want can only result from one of those iron clip found in beauty stores AFTER you perm my hair) This place used to have really really good hair washing service as well - the head massage is top-notch. But now they rush things a little and the massage isn't as good as before.... As for price - hair cutting's pretty reasonable. 30-40 depending on the amount of hair you want off. As for hair dye I think it's slightly pricey but not really out of the norm. For perm I believe it was around 100 for a medium length. And yes - they prefer cash...if you want to use your credit card "tax" will be applied. so make sure you get your money from the bank first. So I desperately needed a haircut because the usual place I go to in Fort Lee, NJ @ Akane Salon had no appointment. I read the reviews for the best salon in Flushing and this place was highly rated. It was a walk-in and they assigned me someone random named Andy. The hair wash by some other lady took 20 minutes, but this guy cut through my hair in 10 minutes. If I am going to pay $25 for a hair salon hair cut, I would expect it to be detailed in cutting it with scissors and only use the buzzer for shaping the sides and the back edges. He buzzed cut majority of my hair. This is not Supercut, where it they only use buzzers. Lesson learned. Sticking to Japanese hairstylist and going to pay the $30 @ Akane Salon. read more

Mandy is the best!! I have been going to Mandy with my two daughters for about a year. She is very experienced and helpful. She always makes great suggestions after finding out what we want. And the results are always wonderful. I just saw her for a haircut, perm and color. I was little nervous because I had had straight hair for years and was ready for a new look. After visiting their website, I was pretty hesitant to come here. I am not a super-trendy-skinny jeans-multi-highlights kind of chick (though I have been know to wear skinny jeans). But I badly needed a new style (my bf would disagree), so I called and made an appt which they were able to make in English (first test, since I don't know enough cantonese to say layers, and bangs). Since all the reviews have been name dropping, my stylist was Elson, who actually happened to be in skinny jeans and tie. I totally agree with Swan Z. I had similar experience with her. I walked in as new customer, they recommended Tino to me. She's sweet and looks like TW singer Makiyo. After the cut and blow dry, my hair looked good. But next day, my hair is out of style, uneven and very difficult to manage. I had to go to the other hair salon to get it fixed. So, if u r going there without knowing any hairstylist, the bottom line is, DO NOT use TINO. She's not worth the money. :( read more

I came here with a friend for a haircut. Im very satisfied with the results. I had Mandy and thank god shes good with scissors, because we basically communicated via sign language. Why do they bother asking about language preferences? The cut itself was good but I think Kens better... my friends cut was really cute. I didn't really have time to look through the book or anything because they literally give you like 30 seconds to randomly flip to a page and russian roulette it. Mandy also keeps trying to convince you to do other treatments. My hairs not perfect but its definitely not as bad as she says it is... which left me feeling offended. Price was 35 plus tips. Men should come here because they left looking great. The only really irritating thing was that she kept leaving me to attend to other things. Otherwise, very skilled, fairly nice person. I've come here twice to dye my hair. First time- I asked for Ariana grande cupcake red and i even suggested color blends but they didn't listen. Instead, I got this hideous dull shade of red. I re-dyed my hair the next week myself and got the shade I wanted. I paid over 150$ for something I had to redo. Second time- I asked for a bayalage and again suggested color options because I expressed greatly that I did not want my hair to come out orange. My colorist didn't listen and he said he knew what he was doing and mixed his own color. My hair was bleached to the point where I was in pain. The end result didn't look like he did anything to my hair. He told me after several washes it would be the color I wanted. After 2 weeks, my hair was bright orange and yellow :'( paid almost 300$ for this. Had to immediately redye it myself. 2 stars only because my colorist was very patient and took his time, but regardless... Did a bad job. read more

I've returned to this salon 3 times now for haircuts. Well the first two was just to get my bangs cut and the most recent visit was for more than just bangs. My regular stylist is Ice, she's really sweet and will listen to what kind of haircut you want and will fulfill it too. Usually Chinese hair stylist, when you tell them you want to trim off 1-2 inches they'll double that amount, but not Ice she is very careful and spends substantial amount of time cutting and styling your hair. My washing and cutting my hair was $38, this price does not include tip. Even though it's more expensive than other places in Flushing, I still think it's worth the extra 10 dollars to get a haircut which you are happy with! :D Thanks Ice and Sub-Image!! woo woo read more

Finally, I've found a salon that I can confidently go back to without fear! I've had my hair butchered by other places here in Queens and I've always been iffy about getting it cut so I just wait till I go to Japan in the summetime. Sub-Image reminds me a lot of the studio I used to go to in Japan, with the same great service and outcome! I came here yesterday at around 5ish, and there was a 10 minute wait. My hair washer was really nice. He made sure I was comfortable and his hands were very gentle. The head/neck massage was relaxing, but I'm really ticklish so it was a little awkward for me. I regret not getting the name of my stylist, but she was awesome. She listened to what exactly I wanted and always let me know what she was doing. I have long hair, and I told her I wanted to keep the length and do long layers, and fix my bangs because they were getting pretty crucial. She took her time, paid a lot of attention on keeping the length equal and getting every strand of hair right. She really knew what she was doing! Something I wasn't really new to was the way she layered my hair with regular scissors. I got scared at first, but it came out great! With my bangs after she cut it to the length I wanted it, she did this cool thing by twisting my hair and cutting it with the layering scissors. I've never seen that before either, but it worked! It was pretty busy when I came in, but when I left about an hour and a half later, I was one of the only ones in there. Talked to a few friends from school today who've always passed by Sub-Image on Main St. but didn't know how to get in! Turn the corner on 40th Rd &Main and you'll see a little sign. You can follow the arrows up the stairs or take the elevator. It's a trendy little 2nd floor salon, with comfortable chairs and hip decor. All the stylists are really fashionable too! The music selection is enjoyable :). For a wash, cut, and dry-- before tip, it came out to $35. Not bad at all, and well worth it! I was happy to see people with thick and curly hair in here happy with their results as well. Next time I want to get my hair cut by one of the boys :D! read more

Took my parents here for haircuts today. My mom had a perm and a cut, and Mandy did an UNBELIEVABLE job!! Mandy told her what would work best for her look, and wow, the result was amazing, my mom looked at least 10 years younger!!!! I am so happy that I found this place from Yelp. This may look like a yelp review for sub-image hair salon but it's really an open love letter to my favorite hairstylist Kid. I've been getting my haircut here for about a year now. I frankly didn't know what to expect on my first visit to this place. I only relied on all the yelp reviews that touted its praise. Was I going to get fob haired? All the other reviewers recommended kid so I decided that it would be a good idea to make an appt with him, as well. It was pretty much love at first haircut. I proceeded to immediately break up with my barber at the time. (Heartless. I know) I love kid because he always sees my hair's full potential. I always bring a picture with me and kid always obliges. White hair Asian hair it doesn't matter. He'll work his magic. Kid meticulously obsesses over every detail. He never rushes your cut and is unfazed by the angry laser beams that emanate from the jealous stare of the next customer in line. And after each haircut he'll teach you the tricks necessary to pull off that salon look at home. With all these things that make us work, I wish we never ever break up. Kid. I've only cheated on you once. But I felt really bad about it. read more
