It's the type of restaurant every town in Israel had before pizza and sushi became the rage. It's a type of restaurant that has all but disappeared in Israel. It's all about the food, middle eastern style, good quality, ample servings, served in an adequate but minimalist environment. As a salad lover, I especially like the salad samplers that are served while you wait for your entree. Visit this restaurant as if you are entering a Time Machine and you will have an unforgettable experience.

We arrived and there was a wait but it's a small little place so we waited outside until another group of people came and started smoking so we went inside ... When we saw that one of the tables was available and there was really no place to stand, one of us went over to start to sit down (as a solution) and the waitress whose name was Lulli or Lolli started yelling at us telling us that she had to clean first and I said yeah, but there's no place for stand and she yelled that we had to wait. Now, if you've been to Israel, you'll know that people are pretty rude. Kind of nasty they yell at each other we all know and accept it. And you kind of expect it if you go to an Israeli restaurant coz you're gonna get treated poorly. They act like you're bothering them. Of course it's not true of all Israeli restaurants but it's a generalization that's pretty spot on. Once you do get seated and she calms her ass down, you order the most amazing lemonade with fresh lemon, mint, and blended with ice that is to perfection. There's a spread already on the table of small little salads, chickpeas, carrots a lot of cabbage beets etc , to pick on while you're choosing from the extensive Israeli food on the menu . They have all the great Middle Eastern foods that you'll find in Israel . The hummus, the baba ghanoush, the falafel, the amazing is really salad with all the fresh herbs and the delicious fresh ingredients. Five of us spent about $22 each and had the best time despite our waitress and the leaky ceiling and the pretty dingy decor , but that's why we come here. Oh, and the tip is included in the price, which is probably why your waitress doesn't give a damn if you like her or not. We will be returning here for that Lemonanna and overlook Loli or whatever her name was.

The bagels have changed... not for the better. I held off on…read morethis review until I'd been here twice in a row with sub-standard bagels. The first time, was near the end of February... we had picked up bagels for family visiting from NY to show them we had amazing bagels here. It was a massive disappointment... undercooked, overly tough, soft to the point of being mushy outside, and lacking flavor. I had hoped it was an anomaly. Two months later, things have gotten even worse. Same sub-standard bagels as February. However, this time it turns out that they have completely changed their pumpernickel bagels. They are no longer rich and dark... almost looking like whole wheat.... None of the natural sweetness of pumpernickel... essentially flavorless. They also no longer make the whole wheat everything; another favorite, and something has changed with their everything coating... used to have lots of garlic and onion, and just the right bit of salt crystals. Today's mix is mostly sesame with very little onion, and it was just salted.. too much, with no crystals. That's a shame, because for us, the pumpernickel bagels and the wonderful counter team are the two things that we drive nearly an hour to experience on a Sunday morning. No more real pumpernickel and generally sub-standard bagels in every regard mean that we won't be back... it wasn't an anomaly... it's a complete change. I was wondering why the restaurant and counter had few customers this morning... breakfast time on a Sunday when it's usually very busy. I'm wondering if these changes have affected other aspects of the restaurant? These new bagels are not good, and definitely not worth the drive or the cost. I've been coming here since they opened.... Nearly 40 years. It was a good run.

This was my recent dinner at Kalinka, where instead of my usual barbecue sauce I seasoned it with sour cream ("smetana")! It's always great to expand one's culinary horizons, isn't that what makes a foodie? As other reviewers mentioned, the majority of the space is a grocery store stocking traditional dishes from Russia and other Eastern European countries. There are a few tables inside the store as well as outside. You order at the counter, and your dish is brought out to your table if eating in. Besides my chicken dish, I also enjoyed a portion of kachapuri (stuffed cheese bread) as well as a warm and flaky cherry pie ("vishni"). One of my overseas friends recommended pomegranate juice as part of my wellness regimen. To my delight, I was able to purchase a large bottle of it (sok granat). The cashier / deli attendant helped me find it, and also gave me the opportunity to place my order in Russian as well. Thank you for that "above and beyond" level of service. Blagodario bas!

I am always hoping she is there when I arrive. The other employees at this location greet you with respect and welcome your customers. Because I often visit restaurants, I pay close attention to the atmosphere, the employees, and the food. I introduced this hidden gem to some of my friends and family members. So let's talk about the food. There has never been a time when my food was not good. They give you plenty of food at this location. I will say this: the past two times I have ordered a bagel, it has not tasted fresh, and that was a little disappointing. I'm sure there must be an explanation. This is my only concern. Thank you, Melissa, for always being the light you are in this establishment. Sincerely, Elaine
