I debated whether I should give a review or not just because I hate criticizing small businesses but with the number of good reviews it's just very misleading... I had a terrible experience. To start when I arrived, I told Sue what service I scheduled and explained how I like my hair done. (I've been getting my hair highlighted since I was 15) At this moment I knew I should've left because Sue continued to go back and forth with me like she didn't understand me. This went on what felt like 10 minutes. I tried explaining and even showed a photo. All I wanted was a partial foil, leaving some of my natural hair, and I just didn't want my hair platinum/white. She did every single thing I asked her not to do. She does not highlight to the root which looks insane. She fried my hair too. She wasn't friendly. Don't trust these reviews because she gives free service to people who give her good reviews. So misleading. read more

Please read before choosing Styles at Five, I never write reviews but I truly feel wronged in this situation. I chose this salon because I saw good reviews and they had availability before my birthday. I have been cutting my own hair for 2 years now and have never dyed it other than highlights years ago so I wanted to treat myself. I asked for highlights and a haircut. Sue cut my hair dry which I've seen before. Then we talked about what I wanted with highlights. She told me my hair would probably come out a caramel color because my hair was so dark. She spent probably 2-2.5 hours placing the highlights with bleach. In the middle of the process my head started to extremely burn so she took me to the wash station and rinsed that part out of my hair. I felt like I could have passed out from the pain and it went from 0 to 100 so fast. We weren't even half way there when the burning started. I was very uncomfortable and in pain the rest of the session. She didn't apologize or show a lot of concern. I was there for a total of 4.5 hours. The salon was completely empty my entire stay other than another hair dresser being there for maybe an hour. I was also left in the wash station for 20 minutes with half a wet head, so the rest of my head could process while Sue ate her lunch. Once we were done, she said it came out a lot lighter than she expected. Shouldn't she know how my hair is going to look? I am basically blonde and this is not how I would describe highlights. They were very chunky and uneven. She also suggested I come back to get the back lighter. Sue wasn't very communicative and didn't talk a lot. A few hours after my appointment, I realized my scalp was oozing. My EMT roommate looked at my head and said my scalp looked burnt and said your scalp should never ooze. My hair was clumped together and crunchy from the oozing. My roommate also said she didn't know how I got burnt when the highlights didn't even reach my scalp. I had to go the doctor the next day, my birthday, and he told me the area was likely infected. He said it was either a chemical burn or burn from the foil. I went back to Sue after the doctor and she didn't even remember me after spending nearly 5 hours with her the day before. She had a client with her so I asked if she had a good time for me to come back to talk to her but she walked over to me. After I explained my situation, she got very defensive and said it was probably the product left over, which doesn't make sense since she completely blowed dried my hair before I left. I'm glad I had brought a doctor's note with me. She then asked if my name was Kate and I truly felt that she did not care. She did end up giving me a refund and apologizing. It's a week later now and my head is still sore and still oozing slightly. My hair was over processed and feels extremely damaged. I honestly do not understand how Sue has a license and has such good reviews. This was the worst experience I've ever had and was very displeasing on my birthday. read more

I was super excited about this salon after reading so many great reviews and drove 25 minutes to find it. I arrived a few minutes before my appointment, and when I walked in was not greeted or spoken to at all. After it seemed that I was not expected, I confirmed I had a bang trim appointment. After being seated with barely a word, the stylist (I believe it was Sue, but I can't say for sure because she did not introduce herself to me) did not ask for pictures or what kind of bang I wanted, she just saw I had some grown out bangs and started cutting. I had curtain bangs on the shorter side which I loved- they were just grown out and needed a touch up. I normally go to a cosmetology school for my hair, so I am used to stylists having conversation with me about what I want and asking for pictures and am very willing to communicate and understand that sometimes it can be hectic, but still, a hello or at least some small conversation would be nice. After she hastily (not carefully at all) cut my bangs, I asked for a few layers to hopefully help the blunt bangs blend to my hair a bit better, and those were also done in a rush. There was one other client in the salon who had foils drying, so I was not sure why the process was sped up. With barely any other words exchanged, I was directed to the counter to pay and left. Def not what I wanted- I did not want to be treated rudely further and did not want my hair to get even further from what I wanted, so I just went home and am hoping some creative styling will help to cover the unevenness and bluntness. I understand being in a rush, again I usually go to a cosmetology school so I am very, very patient and often eager to communicate clearly and work with the stylist to make sure we are on the same page.I was so excited to have a salon in Athens and hoped this would be the one, but the customer service is very lacking and unfortunately I paid the price. read more

I've been looking for a decent hair salon here in Athens for a long time. I called same-day to see if anyone could take me. Sue said she could at 5pm that day. I came up to the door, and no one was there but Sue!! Sue stayed after she'd done a wedding to squeeze a couple of more clients in. I liked that Sue made the time for me. She also appeared very attentive to what I wanted. I wanted a shampoo and cut, and about 2 in off my hair, fixing up the layers, shortening them a bit, thinning certain sections, and framing them to my face. Now, I knocked off stars for a reason: I liked the cut and the weightlessness after thinning, but I did not get a lot off of my layers. My hair is about one length now after it was cut, but it was somehow styled so that I didn't notice it until I went home and shampooed my hair again a couple of days later. I also felt like for a shampoo and cut it was pricey: I appreciate it when people talk to me while I get my hair cut, so I tipped well, but it came out to about $51. The base price for a shampoo and cut is $45. I appreciated Sue's professionalism and her abilities, and I would recommend her; I would just try to emphasize EXACTLY what you want and make sure there is good communication. Sue was able to give me exactly what I wanted. In one visit she gave me a beautiful haircut, bangs, and colored my hair exactly how I wanted, even though I didn't have a perfect picture to show her. I have always measured the skill of a good stylist that my hair looked as good on the day I went in to have it done again as it did on the day I had it done. That was vital as I worked in a very public facing career, often photographed, recorded and at public functions. I couldn't afford to have an "awkward" in-between day before I went back to the salon. And I was often too busy to go to a salon often. So invariably I would be back in the salon within 10 weeks and I was happy to pay (oftentimes a fortune) for it. This shutdown put this to the real test...it has been 22 (!!) weeks and my hair still looks beautiful and natural! My family cannot get over it. They say my hair looks like it did when I was young growing up in Florida and at the pool or beach regularly. Sue is not just an amazing stylist...she is an artist! Of all the inconveniences and worries I had (as we all did) during the shutdown, my hair was not one of them. Sue has an almost clairvoyant ability to know just how my hair would grow in and the balayage highlights she gave me look like I had them naturally, even though I spent most of this time indoors during winter (she did my hair in December!) and after that in lockdown. And even more important in these crazy times, you won't have to contemplate skipping a car payment to have her do her magic. She was the first stylist I went to see after moving here from DC and only trusting my hair to exclusive salons like Elizabeth Arden (often sharing space with actual celebrities) and I really lucked out, in a big way. The best...right from the first time. And she is sweet... going to her cute and comfortable salon is like spending time with an old friend. She even made my mother, along with me after a lunch in downtown Athens, feel welcome. During the lockdown, she reached out to me to give a free consultation and I honestly didn't need it, my hair still looks fine (although I can't wait to go in and have her work her magic again!). She cares, and that means a lot to me. She even squeezed me and my mother in for appointments before my birthday, I can't wait to go see her again! I can't imagine going anywhere else. If you are looking for a new stylist or just need a break from your current stylist relationship (and they are relationships, aren't they?)...do not hesitate...Sue is the real thing. You will not be disappointed. I never do reviews (I know I should because I rely on them so much in choosing anything) but I knew I needed to take the time to do one for her. She deserves to have people know how wonderful she is and be praised for it. read more

Had an awful experience. Payed $40 to get my hair cut one inch and get my bangs done and as I was walking out I thought it looked great but when I got home I noticed she completely messed up my bangs and they looked like a kindergartner had done them. She was also very rude and had AirPods in the entire time and barely spoke to me. Definitely not where I am going again. read more

Ok so first of all, SUE IS AMAZING. It's such a cute location, and Sue is absolutely amazing. I had someone mess up my color before and was soooo nervous to get my color touched up but she truly worked her magic and made my hair color look amazing. Also wanted a trim that wasn't too noticeable and she understood me perfectly. She's so sweet too and really just wants her clients to be happy.
