The last couple of days, I've been stuck in the apartment all day so when I popped out for coffee, I bought a paper at the 7-Eleven. Obviously, much of it is slanted towards Massachusetts happenings and it seems to go a leeeetle bit liberal towards the current occupant of the White House. Other than that, the news is good and you can't beat the coverage of the Boston sports teams.

What style of decor? Can I fax a menu to her? I politely explained that I didn't know while here tone was condescending, aggressive, and she used some profanity. At this point I hung up. Don't people realize that you get more bees with honey and vinegar? I think that there is a certain respect you have for people in general. But I feel bad for the management/owner of the Improper as one of the uncouth rogue employees acted idiotically. Now, to be honest, he was an attractive guy, nice abs, in good shape, but I think in his head he was like MALE MODEL HOT! He told me that he had submitted his photos to Boink! and that they had called him back about a photo shoot. At the time I thought it was a bit odd, but just laughed it off. Then came the night of the photo shoot! I was walking home from dinner with friends when he called. Boy I am dating: Babe, it went soooo well tonight! Me: Oh yeah? :: sarcasm in my voice:: Tell me about it! Boink! Model: Babe, I looked so hot, I looking like a f*cking greek god! A f*ucking GREEK GOD! Me: Oh yeah! :: thinking, OH NO! :: Boy I plan on dumping: Yeah, babe, it went so well I can't wait to see the pictures! Yeah Babe, not my style, it ended shorty after. When the magazine came out my roommates threatened to plaster my walls with it! I guess the cool/creepy thing about Boink! is you never know who you might find on the pages and then in the seat on the train next to you. I only skimmed some of the articles, and honestly some of the photo shots were just poorly done. Lame. Some of the worst writing I have ever read, in…read moreamateurish, poorly-researched articles, filled with conjecture, opinion, and assumption passed off as fact. Boink is essentially a huge bait and switch-- you THINK it will be intellectually stimulating, yet hot and dirty at the same time. The switch comes when you realize that while yes, sometimes they show dudes and unattractive ladies, it's still mainly antiseptic, unsexy, Playboy circa 1989, and the writing filled with fratboy-and-girl bullshit, with the occasional strident fake-sex-advocate writing about the liberating qualities of whatever sex act he or she just tried out and will hopefully shock their parents with at Thanksgiving dinner. It comes down to lack of science, lack of sexy, huge lack of perspective, and lack of literacy. We all (hopefully) go through a sexual awakening where we try new things, talk to our friends, and develop our identities. Fortunately, most of us don't publish a boring, stupid, frigid sex magazine to commemorate the experience.

Full disclosure: I worked for the PMCG (but not the Phoenix itself, it was a company called TPI) back in 99-01 taking personal ads, running refunds, supervising the call center, and doing various bits of backend programming for a salary that amounted to being kicked in the balls and flipped a shiny coin as my assailant sauntered on. Still, I had many great memories. But this is not the time. One of the first things I did upon moving to Boston in January of 98 was to grab a copy of the Phoenix in the lobby of my college. It was free for us (even though you used to have to pay for it). I was amazed by what they were printing. This was nothing like journalism back in Amish country: Music reviews, social events, scathing articles. . SWEAR WORDS! ZOMG! I got hooked. I made sure to grab a copy every week when they showed up. In fact, this lead to the one act of petty larceny in my life. I didn't know that the phoenix wasn't just a free paper so I grabbed one on the way out the door of Tower Records. When I got back I saw the price at the top, felt so bad I went back and tried to pay. The cashier just looked at me like I was nuts and turned her back. Ah, the memories. It's odd to write this, since there was a rift after I "left". I never held a grudge, but picking you up seemed odd somehow, like seeing an old girlfriend who never gave you back all your stuff and still owed you $200 for that month you covered the rest of her rent, but now that you've passed I can say that I honestly have nothing but good memories. Boston Phoenix, you kept me in the know about what was up for years. You gave me reasons to laugh at things that weren't funny, not laugh at things that should have been, and a list of shows I needed to sneak into or weasel my way onto a list for as long as I can remember. I hope that in the years to come people remember you as fondly as I.

Boston magazine has been continuously sending me subscriptions for years now. I never subscribed to…read morethem and have contacted them numerous times to cancel. It doesn't cost me anything, but someone is getting charged for this service and these magazines are going directly into the rubbish bin. Their customer service gave me a phone number to cancel through since the subscription is via a third party. The phone number is a disconnected line :) Not sure why they cannot manually cancel the service as it is just unwanted (and quite wasteful) spam at this point.
