I could have done without their proclivity for Peter Gabriel and the Talking Heads but hey, they overcame that by introducing me to Blitzen Trapper, Frightened Rabbit, Lissie, Deer Tick, as well as playing some of the artists I already loved such as Bob and Jakob Dylan, The Decemberists, Steve and Justin Townes Earle. - Independent radio station - no corporate playlists and no commercials - Run by college kids

College radio is widely understood as the freeform radio vanguard, where one can hear musical offerings unavailable on commercial radio. When I tune into a college station, I don't want to hear a single song I know. 99% of what WERS plays nowadays is Top 40 "alternative" music from the 80s and 90s. Stuff I've been sick of for decades. Honk shoo. It's a college station masquerading as a commercial station masquerading as a twenty year-old iPod. If you are a retailer looking for the most unchallenging background noise for your shoppers to ignore, or perhaps a listener looking for a radio station to convince you that not only has there been no good music made in the past 35 years, but also that maybe music was just never good, WERS is it.

I started out taking an in person class at a local Japanese school, but found the instruction too unstructured. Most students had family members who already spoke Chinese. Not to be deterred, I sought out a textbook on my own. Started with Rosetta Stone but was dissatisfied. I ended up using Cheng &Tsui's Integrated Chinese program. The textbook has audio files for each important vocabulary and dialogue section and also includes a large chapter that helps one learn to create the vocal sounds that do not exist in English. Dialogues have extremely crisp and clear speakers, and dialogues are repeated 3 times at different speeds. All audio can be listened to over and over as you perfect your accent (I have gotten many complements on my accent!) This really helps as one learns to comprehend at more rapid pace. There are flash cards that link to each lesson, and a separate character book to help you learn to write. You also get to choose between traditional or simplified characters. I started with simplified, but then a native speaker I know talked me into traditional. Easy switch!, I have tried other instruction materials and textbooks. There is no comparison. This is a Best in Class set of materials not just for Chinese, but for foreign language learning in general! It has made it possible for me to learn Chinese all on my own. (There are also multiple levels in this program). Five plus stars Cheng &Tsui! And thank you! Chinese is the hardest language I have undertaken - even makes Japanese look like a walk in the park. You have given me the tools to be successful!

My Mandarin language and social program utilize the "Integrated Chinese" Textbook Simplified Chinese, Third Edition, Part 1 to the fullest potential. Personally, I love the vocabulary, Chinese sentence structure and grammar formation, and the cultural background at the end of every chapter where informative. Instruction is in English with Simplified Chinese characters of corresponding English translation, which is very important to me for having no prior exposure to enable me to learn. The cast of characters in the book brings humor to learning without dead air. This book is specifically targeted to ABC (American Born Chinese) and Westerners who are genuinely interested in learning Mandarin. Priced at the typical college textbook markup of $40.00 which does not include an audio CD.
