This guy is so much fun. He was so sweet and answered all of our questions without pressuring us to buy anything. He let us see items outside of their case and gave us free roam around the store. The selection they have is so unique and so gorgeous. Everything from very gothic pieces to very delicate finery. Obviously these are antiques, and very fine antiques so it can be very pricey, but he is willing to show you alternatives that are cheaper. But everything is still reasonably priced considering how valuable it is. read more

I love visiting businesses like Stuff Antiques! Joe has owned this shop for more than 50 years and has curated quite a collection of pieces. You feel the warmth of his hospitality and immediately step back in time the moment you walk in the door. He has beautiful antique lamps, chandeliers and wall sconces. Wood cabinets with original hardware to remind of a time when craftsmanship was appreciated. Antique slot machines that took me back to when coins rattling in the tray made me feel like a winner. Authentic stained glass windows that once adorned a beautiful home kissed by the sunlight each day. Gumball machines. Costume jewelry. Radios. Books. Display cases. Columbia records. Porcelain bathroom hardware. Typewriters. Iron bed frames. They may be considered old to some yet each piece has a story rich with history entrusted to Joe. You won't find him online. Don't be fooled, this isn't some discount thrift store or grandmas antiques. He is a true matchmaker of design treasures. (And don't get me started with McAlpine's-- the only thing I ever wanted there was a Jukebox that didn't work and wasn't for sale.) This place is the real deal for people looking for authentic vintage and antique pieces. The owner knows the history of every single item in there and has been in business over 50 years. Even while I was there, he was consulting a customer who apparently had some rare lighting that he wanted to get fixed. I took a lamp in for repair on July 7, 2023, and I received notice that it was ready for pick-up on June 20, 2024. The invoice I received when I dropped it off described the repair (replacement of a glass panel) and indicated that the cost would be $375. I left $175 as a deposit. In addition to waiting nearly a year for the repair to be completed, when I picked the lamp up, the balance was $470.43 rather than $200. The owner would not budge on the cost. The final cost of repair was 72% higher than I had been quoted. I called the owner no fewer than five times during the year to ask about the progress of the repair, and he always had an excuse about why it wasn't ready. At no time during the year did the owner say he was rewiring the lamp and restoring the finish, which he claimed was the reason for the higher cost and which I had not authorized. If you are considering using this business for repair work, be wary of any promises about the cost or time to complete the repair. read more

Stuff Antiques is a period lighting fantasy land. Joe, the proprietor, has amassed a literal treasure trove of fine period lighting. He has an eye for the exceptional and his shop is literally filled to the rafters with only the best examples of each period and lighting style. Whatever style of vintage lighting you're looking for, Joe has it. He's got everything from Victorian to Arts and Crafts; from Art Deco to Mid-century Modern and everything in between. Don't be put off if you arrive and the iron gate at the front entrance is locked. Do as the sign instructs and ring the bell. Joe is likely in the back restoring more fabulous lighting and he will come right to the front and let you in. Once you walk in, welcome to Lighting Wonderland! Take the time to work your way among the aisles and aisles of lighting. Don't forget to look overhead because that's where the fabulous ceiling fixtures reign supreme. This place feels more like a museum of exceptional lighting than a shop, but everything can be yours. Joe also carries some antique furniture and vintage medical cabinets. Again, everything is the best of the best at Stuff Antiques. I normally have a rule that I will not shop in an antiques store that does not having price tags. Joe does not have price tags on anything in his shop. However, he knows precisely what everything is worth and he has all the prices memorized. I have asked more than once about the same item on different visits and the price doesn't change. This also isn't a place where you bargain. The price is the price and that's that. However, Joe has exceptional examples of everything and his prices are fair. Joe also offers restoration services. The BF had a vintage lamp that he inherited that we took to Joe for an assessment. The lamp had been damaged by a well-intentioned polishing in the past and Joe was able to advise us on the best course of action to restore the lamp to its former beauty and to optimize its value. Besides being an expert on vintage lighting, Joe is also very engaging and easy to work with. I found a fantastic vintage Art Deco milk glass school house light at his shop that I just had to have. Unfortunately, I needed two for my kitchen that I was remodeling at the time. I managed to find an exact match to the glass shade on eBay and I took it to Joe and he was able to get me a set of matching vintage metal setups so that the shades are now a perfectly matched set. Joe offers the old fashioned customer service that chain stores can't even begin to touch. Take an afternoon to explore Stuff Antiques, even if you don't need anything. If you have a lighting fetish, this can be a very, very dangerous place for your wallet. But it's worth it to live with beauty on a daily basis. read more

I agree wholeheartedly with Ted S. Im going to talk about my experience with reproduction lighting to validate my opinion on buying ANTIQUE, PERIOD lighting. I just finished restoring a 1785 home in New England and spent several tens of thousands on REPRODUCTION lighting. Had there been a place like Joe's in New England I would have it made in the shade. ( pun intended) I would not have had to settle for reproductions, I could have had wonderful charming treasures like the offerings at STUFF. I just purchased a 1928 Tudor in Historic Phoenix and want to do right by the home. I purchased one Beautiful Tudor Revival Chandelier $1575.00 and a AMAZING Tudor Pendant light with glass shade for my porch for $475.00. I plan on spending another few thousand and my entire tudor will be completed in period lighting!! I spent $2100.00 on just our hallway in New England that had 3 REPRODUCTION sconces, and they always felt "New" and never had the character that a true antique does. ALSO I had asked Joe on more than 4 separate occasions what the price of my chandelier was and it was ALWAYS $1575.00. Also Joe put up with all my questions (LOTS) and multiple visits and even helped me decide on a theme of the lighting. He never steered me to the most expensive pieces and I feel was always very honest to me. He told me which ones had been restored, which ones were signed, which ones had original finishes. I should also mention that the benefit to FINE antique lighting is if I was to ever sell my items from Joe (Never going to happen) I would recuperate my money, unlike anything mass produced today from say lamps plus, ikea or lowe's. I met Joe back in November of 2021, I had called him regarding restoring a 1904 woodstove I had. He said he could do it and it would take some time. Here we are 9 months later and I don't have my stove back. I have called numerous times, in the beginning he was answering and letting me know it was taking time. Now when I call no one answers, I have left multiple messages with no return calls. I actually went to his shop and had the neighbor deliver a message for me. Joe finally did call and said he had some health issues and he was still working on my stove. He said he would call me when he knew something. I have received a few "butt dials" from him and when I try to call back I don't get anyone. I am frustrated that I don't have my antique stove back yet. Not only that but the wood stove is the only way I heat my house and I live up North, winter will be here soon and I don't have a way to heat my house. I am giving 3 stars only because Joe has been so friendly when I have dealt with him. read more

The quality of the lamps and light fixtures in this store are a testament to Joe and his years of collecting. I would happily own and display about 80% of what he has for sale in my home if I had the money and or space. If you are looking for a $100 lamp you can go to any of the Antique "Shabby Chic" malls around town, if you a want a statement piece and quality that has not been seen for 60+ years travel no further. I have purchased 2 ceiling fixtures and one Handel lamp from him in the last 12 months, they were not cheap but they are magnificent. read more

O.K., I have cruised through a few of the "negative" reviews about Joe Weaver's honesty and manner of doing business. I was very surprised to read the reviewer who showed up with the Police in tow; the table; the check; the "lying". I guess any reputable Antique Dealer can get into a "snit". What we do not have in any of the negatives is the Whole Picture; from Joe; the customer; the results for example. I have known Joe Weaver since 1974 or 1975 when I opened a small antique shop a few doors down from STUFF when it was on Roosevelt near 4th Street. Although I could never afford what he carried which at the time were mainly Tiffany and similar lamps as well as "Victrolas", I found him responsive to questions and polite, if not (shy?) reticent. I did not see Joe in many years when I renewed our "professional" relations a few years ago. He has since done a few repairs for me. When asked, one repair was priced as quoted and the other was slightly higher. Joe requested approval on the price first. So, I have NOT experienced pricing issues. Many Antique Dealers do not mark their items. This choice is made for any number of reasons including THEFT. If the thief has no idea of the price, what WILL he/she choose to steal? As one reviewer said, Joe knows the prices from memory and they stay the same. Hey, as a Dealer, I don't get to bargain, either!! Remember, Antique Dealers that do this as a Full Time Business are by and large "quirky"; independent types with strong opinions. They can be lovely people, but they are "mavericks". As severasl reviewers have said, KNOWLEDGE is your Best Friend!! But, know that if you think you overpaid, usually it is YOUR knowledge of the object that is at fault. Rarity, design, maker, are a few of the things to consider. So much for the lecture!! I taught Adult Ed classes in many phases of Antiques at several of the Phoenix area colleges, for many years. Of all of the antique stores in the Phoenix area, Stuff Antiques has by far and away the most impressive selection of architectural antiques. I always tell my husband that if we strike it big one day, I would simply go bananas there. The owner (who is a one man show) knows the history and story behind each piece, and it is clear that he has thoughtfully handpicked his collection. Everytime my husband and I go in, he has offered us great stories and information on antiques, regardless of whether we were interested in buying a certain item. It's true that his items are expensive, and I hhhhate that the store doesn't have price tags on things. However, I don't believe that this is a reflection of unfair pricing or a scheme to take advantage of buyers. The antiques he sells are rare and in amazing condition - it's not cheap stuff. I'm sure if I looked long enough and hard enough I could find something similar to what I've purchased somewhere else for cheaper - but that's the world of antiques. That doesn't make me an unseasoned buyer who gets taken for a ride; I'm just simply someone who sometimes decides to shop at a specialty antique store instead of craigslist or ebay. read more

Stuff Antiques does have wonderful objects. It is a good idea to go in knowing what things are worth. There are no price tags on items and I believe that the owner will take advantage of the unseasoned buyer. Unfortunately, I did not heed my own advice, and paid way too much for a number of items. BEWARE!!!! I was taken advantage of by Joe and this man lacks honesty. I had to arrive with the police to retrieve a table he was supposed to call me with an estimate to restore and come to an agreement about a price to sell it. Instead I received a check in the mail for $250 with a note that he sold it!!! It was still in his store for a price tag of $1,200 and he was untruthful about even that to the police. How very sad it took the police to make things right with this dishonest fellow! read more
