I must start by saying I downloaded yelp and made an account to leave this review. I simply couldn't have asked for a better experience. First off, I came from the States and the whole process of booking x planning went as smooth as possible. They had someone reach out quickly and reply to my messages even faster. The shop was clean, calm and welcoming. Second, and most important was Petra. I've had several tattoos done in the past but she was truly the best I've had. The style of tattoo I was looking seems to be her specialty and it showed. She was extremely professional and you could tell truly passionate about tattooing. She took a couple tries to make sure the sizing was just right and didn't just slap it on and get it done. Throughout the whole process she was focused and never gave me any feelings like this wasn't going to come out perfect. I'd make the trip back from the States just to get tattooed again by her. read more

Unfortunate experience. My friend and I were looking to get a matching design, and studio 13 had openings with their two guest artists at the end of the day. There was really no consultation or discussion about what we wanted, and when we went to go into the room together we were separated. I was so overwhelmed with the experience I didn't advocate for myself, which is my mistake. I was at the end of two months of traveling and looking for the experience to be a way to honor that. The tattoo was horribly done. There are so many mistakes to the original design. People who have seen it ask why the linework was so bad. It's supposed to be a triskelle, but the artist closed the circuits of the spiral with horrible linework. He also put the the stencil on upside down and I didn't realize it until I left the studio because it was a spiral design and I was focused on getting the placement right. Again, I have responsibility in this, but I usually trust my tattoo artists to conduct themselves with care and obviously that's not what I was getting. All this and then both my tattoo and my friend's tattoo ended up getting infected in the healing process. I am heavily tattooed, and I've never experienced this before. I reached out to the studio to tell them I wasn't happy and they were somewhat dismissive. I am absolutely going to begin the very expensive and long process of removal as soon as possible. Went to Studio XIII to get my second tattoo done. I got my first tattoo done in Glasgow and was highly disappointed at the quality of it, so much so that I was left in tears! Studio XIII are on another level. Lovely friendly and welcoming artists, great care and detail in the tattoos and awesome prices! The guy who did mine (a Dutch artist I think) wanted to put a spin on my tattoo and the outcome was fantastic, I love showing it off. The artist was friendly and he was really proud of the artwork he did on my arm, that was really nice to see. I've also had my cartilage pierced here and again, I was put at ease and made to feel very welcome. The thing I love most about Studio XIII is that they don't judge you or your ideas, they listen and help you to come up with designs that end up looking amazing. I often get asked about where I get my tattoos done, and the only place I go in Edinburgh is Studio VIII! This place has some incredible tattoo artists and I have never been more happy than with the work I've had done here. I have 5 tattoos, 4 of which are from here, so that speaks volumes! There's a great old school vibe inside, several artists to choose from and most importantly: it's very clean and it's very friendly. Pricing starts at a basic rate of £40, then is worked out for the amount of time spent on it according to the piece. By that I mean a wee tattoo will cost £40, but a bigger one that takes an hour will cost that, plus the artists time & materials. This may sound expensive, but trust me: IT'S NOT. You only have one chance at a tattoo, so research the artists, research the design, and be sure to invest in it. You get what you pay for! Got a problem or notice the inks not properly healed? Not an issue - you can pop back in for advice and a touch up. I've never had to do this, but it's great to know! They also have a piercing studio here which I've heard only great things about too... I was in Edinburgh for all of 36 hours back in '07. It was my only stop in Scotland during my 9 day trip to the UK. While I was there, however, I *had* to get a tattoo to commemorate being there. I liked the looks of this shop, and had heard good things about it. While I was in there getting my tattoo (set up the appointment the first day, came back the next to get inked), I come to find out that one of the owners is from Wisconsin. We swapped stories, I got my ink and had a great time! The shop wasn't huge, 2 tattoo chairs and a chair for piercings (with a curtain to draw around for privacy). The chairs are in the back, separated from the gallery up front. Prices were comparable to what I would have paid in the states, but not sure how they measure up to other shops in town. I love my tattoo, it's vibrant and cheerful, and was the best souvenir I brought home. read more

I'll be honest, as some other reviews have said, I was freaking intimidated by this place upon first glance. Everyone in there had lots of tattoos and cool peircings. Meanwhile, I'm pretty girly, I was in clothes from work, I only have piercings in my ears, and no tattoos. However, I had heard great things and knew this is where I wanted to get my first tattoo. After I went in (twice) I scheduled my appointment and was ready to go! I had seen the portfolio of the artist who was doing mine (Noemi) and was freaking stoked. And. Freaking. Terrified. Absurdly scared. Unreasonable freaked out. I was getting a tattoo on my ribs, albeit small, and (stupidly) psyched myself out about how much it would hurt. Upon arrival Noemi assured me she would be gentle and it would all be okay. Still hesitant I headed downstairs. She did a small line and I realized it wasn't that bad! My tattoo was over before I knew it! After carefully explaining the aftercare instructions, I paid and was on my way. Speaking of paying, I just want to say that all these people complaining about the prices are ridiculous. I paid 80 pounds for a freaking awesome tattoo that will be on my body for the rest of my life. Even though it's small, I don't get why people are upset about spending money to invest in something you will literally have for the rest of your life. I'm pretty sure there isn't anything else you could spend that amount of money on that will last that long. I would rather pay as much as I did and get a stellar tattoo than pay a little less and not be as confident in my artist's abilities. Suffice to say I really enjoyed my experience here and would definitely go again if I wanted another. And after realizing how not terrifying it is, I'm not ruling that out. read more

Look, if you're going to let someone push a needle through part of you, you have to trust them. Studio 13 came recommended to me, luckily because Edinburgh centre at least seems to have a dearth of piercers. However, Sarah at Studio 13 was available on a walk-in on a Saturday afternoon. Reception lady was lovely, made sure she got down the right details of what I wanted (location, side) and sent me off to fill out the disclaimer form/health check. There was only one person waiting before me and she went in just after I finished filling out the form, so I didn't have long to wait. The upstairs of Studio 13 is nice - I don't know what people mean by intimidating, because it feels more like an upmarket hairdressers, with tattoo art on the walls. After about 15 minutes Sarah came over to me, confirmed my details and got me to pick the size of bar I wanted (I went, as she thought, for the smaller one because my face is little). Then I was taken to the piercing room. Sarah drew on where she thought the piercing should go, and I had a good check in the mirror to make sure I was happy. Sarah is very direct but not in a perfunctory manner, and I felt really at ease. She cleaned up/sterilised around where my new holes were to go, then told me to take a big steady breath as she pinched my eyebrow and got the needle through in one smooth move. I was eager to get out of my chair and have a good look, but Sarah made sure I was all cleaned up (blood does have a tendency to make things messy) first. All sorted and preened in the mirror, I was given my aftercare instructions (and a sticker!) and ready to go on my way. I was pleased with the whole process, and with the result. This studio is nothing less than professional and kind. I set up an appointment with Jordan, not knowing what to expect as I am coming in as a tourist. I was surprised to find Jordan so considerate of my design. Even though my tattoo was a simple outline of a heart, he made sure it was the damn best. I am yet not used to tattoos as this was only my second one, so it is pretty accurate to say I was nervous. Jordan's kindness, consideration, and storytelling made the process much easier for me. I vacationed in Scotland this last February (2014). It was such an incredible place I knew I HAD to get a Tattoo there. Problem was everywhere was booked, including Studio XIII but the friendly staff was able to squeeze me in with JFK. He was fun to be tattooed by and did an excellent job, even when I asked him to do the tricky border. My tattoo looks amazing and has healed great! Even though I was no stranger to tattoos, he recommended me the tattoo cream and went over in DETAIL the best care during the healing process. My experience here was great! The shop was friendly and had a great vibe. The only way I can imagine anybody finding the shop or staff intimidating or rude is if you are completely lacking in self confidence and/or social skills. My wife waited in the lobby while I got tattooed and felt totally comfortable. And last but not least, to all the people complaining about price: YOU GE WHAT YOU PAY FOR! Respect the artists and do not insult their efforts by trying to haggle down a price because you are a "GROUP" or because your tattoo is "Small." Get in line or get out. THE TATTOO I GOT WAS GREAT. No failure in artistry here. Went in for my tattoo, gave him a picture, got it blown up, put it on my body, did it... Bing. Bang. Boom. I'm out of there in 15 minutes. But... I will warn you of two things. #1. It's an intimidating tattoo place. The artists are probably some of the best (i checked out their books, they're pretty brilliant) but that sometimes means you feel like they don't want to do a little cutesy tattoo (literary quote right here). I felt very un-badass here and it wasn't so welcoming. When someone is sticking a needle in your skin to leave a permanent piece of art, I'd like a bit of chatter. which leads me to #2. The tattoos are done in one big room, all very close to the other artists and music blasting... so no chatter, no small talk, no dishing on cool places in the city and nothing (this is most important for me) nothing to keep my mind from thinking about the massively excruciating pain that is pulsing through my body. AND... My shirt is 1/2 off... so I'm in a room full of hot young tattoo artists and cute guys getting tattoo sleeves and all I can think of is - F**K! I have tan lines and need to lose 15 pounds and F**K! Someone is sticking a needle in my bod. OW.OW.OW.OW.. All in all a bit disconcerting. Tattoo came out perfect, and was done in 10 mins - ZERO complaints about the art, it looks amazing... but my hope to find out the ins and outs of Edinburgh's tattooed side and meet some people was not fulfilled. I've only been in here for piercings, so can't comment on the quality of their tattoo artists! I've been in here for piercings twice, because my many-pierced friend had recommended them to me. Even though I know quite a bit about aftercare, I still wanted to hear the piercer's opinion on it, and she gave me very good advice. She calmed me down, pierced me quick and correct. All the tools used are sterilised and you're in a private area, so no peekers! It may not be the cheapest place in Edinburgh, but you don't want to go after deals for something like a piercing or tattoo! read more

Great tattoo place in the heart of Edinburgh city! I emailed the studio with the design I had in mind, and they got back to me promptly and advised that I should make an appointment. I called up and they booked me in with Tom. I did the usual background checks and made sure I was confident in the studio doing a good job based on all the reviews and research I did, this studio definitely was clearly reputable and delivers service at the highest standards. I went in to my appointment, the store front is covered in amazing designs and piercings which were great to look at. Had to fill out a short form and provide ID as proof of being of age to get a tattoo which is standard. Tom greeted me and showed me the design to make sure I was happy, after he was printing the design out on the transfer paper he showed me down to the tattoo room downstairs. There were two other guys getting tattoos. Tom put the print on my arm and made sure I was happy with the angle. I asked him to do it again as wanted it to be more angled on the arm and could see more of the core part of the tattoo. I gave the go ahead to Tom and got started. After about a minute into it I got a dizzy spell and had to stop, Tom got me a can of soda and reassured me that this is normal, he was super understanding and just made sure I was okay before he continued. I had food before the appointment but just something that happens. I felt embarrassed but I just gave myself a moment and got my head together. At no point did the tattooists ridicule me, and I felt really comfortable. Anyway, 90 minutes later of gritting my teeth, the tattoo was done, I was super happy with it. The worst part of the tattoo experience was when he cleaned the tattoo to prevent infection but this is an important part! Safe to say that this studio is super clean and hygienic, so I had no worries there! Tom talked me through the after care, and gave me some instructions and his Instagram details of I needed to get in touch. The studio have a recommended cream and I would definitely advise getting this cream. After a week my tattoo healed up with the cream and following Tom's instructions it's healed perfectly! Overall, a fantastic studio, friendly and relaxed staff and really enjoyed the tattoo experience there. I would absolutely recommend this tattoo place to anyone looking to get a tattoo, and would like to take this opportunity to thank Tom and the Studio for doing such a great job! read more

Studio 13 is a professional tattoo shop with great artists. However, the tattoo shop does not allow for clients to back out of designs, day of tattoo. They have a 48hr cancellation policy for those who want to back out prior to seeing an artists design. If you turn up on the day and dislike what is presented and hope to have your deposit refunded you will unfortunately have no luck in this aspect. I was unhappy with the second stage of my mythology sleeve and the night prior saw my artists design, unhappy with it we agreed I should cancel my appointments as their was conflicts with what i wanted and his artistic integrity for his style. But only after conferring with the artist that we couldn't find a mutual ground for something that was going to be put on my body forever did i cancel. Remember my appointment was next day and no design had been shown so no way to cancel outside the 48hrs. Attached is the chat I had with the staff member when i asked what would have been done about the £100 deposit if i had turned up and walked out. Carefully avoiding the question tells you all you need to know. On the day if you show up and are unhappy with the design and wish to leave with the deposit you will be unable. An on the day decision if you dont like what your artist presents and cant amicably fix it you still have to pay. read more

Went in with my girlfriend to get two small script tattoos as a mark of our holiday in Scotland. When we went in we were told that we would be able to get the tattoos on the day as a new special guest was starting. When we showed him the script he was willing to charge us the two for £120. We thought it was a bit steep but agreed to it to have the owners tell us that it would be £100 each. I was very frustrated cause they tried to rip us off because we were tourist but I myself have a few tattoos and know that something that small would only be €50 max in Dublin. Many way we persuaded them down to £75 each which is still very expensive but we got them done. Each tattoo taking 15 minutes max. Now back home less than a month after I discovered that some letters on mine were starting to fade and I would have to get it touched up. I'm not saying that the place is full of talentless artist but I felt that we were completely ripped off because we weren't from Scotland and I would not go back there again for a tattoo if even if it was free! read more

I got a walk in appointment with Sarah on Saturday, and it was amazing! I couldn't be more satisfied with my experience! I was on vacation to visit a friend in Scotland and kind of dropped in the studio on a whim. I've been pierced at nice boutique piercing studios in Chicago, San Francisco, and Encinitas, and this place was far less than a third of the price I paid in those places. Sarah's technique, however, was definitely on par with any other! She got the piercings done before I even realized it, and while you'd expect getting three piercings in a row to be quite unpleasant, I barely felt a thing - you're not going to get a quicker or more skillful piercing anywhere. Moreover, she was quite pleasant. She's quite the responsible piercer and told me that what I originally had in mind wouldn't have worked and explained the process I'd have to go through in great detail patiently. Could she have just taken the easy route and went ahead with what I asked, knowing I wouldn't be able to come back later if things went wrong? Yes, but she didn't do that. She made sure I'd be able to get results I'd be happy with in the long run. Long story short, I'd definitely come back here again! If I ever decided to get any more piercings, I'd definitely wait to go here! read more

Worst tattoo experience ever. The owner is a a piece of works. Walking around like she's gods gift. Far from it. I doubt she can even draw let alone tattoo. I was brought into some dirty basement to get tattooed in and my artist had to go upstairs to resize the tattoo. Not sure where the copier was but common sense would put it where most of the work is done. For the price of my tattoo they could by a decent printer. Don't think I'd ever go there again. I've been here a few times to have some new metal in my skin, & its one of the best ive ever been to (coming from someone with 25-26 piercings, i know what i like!). When i was new to edinburgh i made the unfortunate mistake of visiting "old town tattoo" about 5 mins walk away... awful piercing experiance there led me to save my ideas until i could find someone who knew what they where doing... then i found sarah! Ive had 2 microdermals in my sternum/cleavage and she helped me replace a mis-placed/rejecting microdermal near my collorbone (by yet another rubbish edinburgh piercer). She was so lovely, chatty but professional. small but clean working area, curtained off from the tattooists. Im so impressed by her piercing skills, very quick & skillfull at getting microdermals in (which if you have ever watched less talented piercers do, its hard to get the right depth/angle while doing it with any speed)... all the ones she has placed have healed with no brusing or problems due to their excellent placement. prices are totally average - £20 or so for a piercing, some a bit more & i think i paid around £30-35 for a microdermal. Every time i come back i feel like a valued customer, she remembers you & its not just "right... in... out, NEXT!"... she asked me about my other piercings & gave me some new ideas for stuff to have. I don't have any tattoos, but my boyfriend has work done here & it looks fantastic. If you are struggling to pick a place to do your piercings & are maybe a little nervous then i can assure you (from someone with a fair bit of experiance being pierced!!) that sarah at Studio 13 is fantastic! read more

Sad to say that I was not impressed with this tattoo shop. I was a walk in customer and wanted to get my first tattoo on holiday over in Edinburgh. I found some staff to be rude and dismissive, quoting prices over £100 pound for very simple, very small script. Although my boyfriend was getting a tattoo with me they refused to give a discounted group price. I was given no direction or advice with regards to aftercare of the tattoo and had to seek that information elsewhere. Follow up conversations with Jade and owner were really awful, the basic services discussed and promised during initial consult were refused. We had no choice but to follow through as we're only here for a short amount of time, and money and time was so invested. Average work, super shitty attitude. I am a tourist who had been to Edinburgh this time last year and just knew that when I came back I would get the tattoo I have wanted for ages done here. I called a few days in advance to book an appointment and I could tell that they really had the customers best interests at heart and they were really thorough and accommodating. Rory did the tattoo and from the moment I walked in the door to the moment I left I felt completely at ease. Rory was perfect, he listened to what I wanted, made the adjustments I asked for, was super laid back and really funny. He was really professional and did his best to keep me as comfortable as possible. He did such an amazing job, I have a tattoo I am really proud of. I am a grown woman (23, even though the manager referred to me as a 'stroppy teenager') who asked a member of staff to help me place an order. I came early in that day to spend plenty of time to get the order right. I even brought a piercing that was the exact size I wanted. When I came to collect a week later, which should have only taken a minute if the order had been correct, the older woman wanted to leave a half-hour early and wanted me to pay for an incorrect order that her own staff had gotten wrong. In a professional establishment, they stop business at closing time, then spend a half hour closing while there are no customers, but in this place they apparently want no one to come in for the last 30 min of opening hours so they can close and spend as little time working as possible. Sad how Britain doesn't understand good business. And one can see how unprofessional these people are from their response to me on Google read more

If you like cartoon-esque tattoos that look nothing like what you've asked for (or were shown), then this is the place for you! If you like to be made to feel uncomfortable and like a product on a production line - come here! Tattoo 'artist' disinterested throughout and not engaged with my ideas. I've ended up with a tattoo that he thought would look good (it doesn't)...as my own ideas were rubbished. The sketch beforehand did look akin to what I wanted...unfortunately that was not reproduced. Privacy and comfort not considered at all, so not the best atmosphere for something that can feel quite daunting. Terrible attitude, cramped uncomfortable tattooing environment, £400 completely wasted on a tattoo that was nothing like or even close to what i had asked for, also executed very badly given its style. Went in to get my piercings done today (second lobes + helix) and it couldn't have been a more pleasant experience. Everyone I met there was so sweet and so accommodating, and the price is honestly SO worth it for the quality of the visit. My piercer Sarah was INCREDIBLE - cheerful and made me feel really at ease, which was especially appreciated since it was my first time in a long time getting piercings. She was really quick and efficient, and checked that the piercings were where I wanted them to be before going at it with the needle. I got tattooed here by Marc last week and will definitely go back to him. It's the first time I've been to Studio XIII but was for my third tattoo and I've got only positive things to say. Ignore the badass comments in other reviews, it's a tattoo studio, there were never going to be Katy Perry posters and kittens in reception! I'm an absolute girlie girl, I remember having bright pink lippy on that day but so what?! Hell, I even asked him if I could get it done with fake tan on (night out next day, gotta think of this stuff). We're customers paying for a service and they provide an excellent one, I think people who posted comments about feeling self conscious are over-thinking it, these guys tattoo and pierce zillions of people and in a City like Edinburgh so they'll see all sorts. My tattoo was pretty girlie, picking up on previous reviews, with Latin script and 3 little drawings and Marc actually drew it up even more delicate and feminine than the stuff I sent him. He was also quick and it's healed quicker than my others, I love it. Mine was all black ink but I saw a couple of people leaving with stunning colour ones. As for the privacy - I was in the little upstairs room so there was the hustle and bustle of people at reception and people coming into the room but the other places I've been tattooed were open too and I like the music and other people as a distraction. Marc chatted a bit but none of the guys I've been to have been very talkative during the actual needle action, which is fine, I'm glad they're concentrating! read more

My friend and I went here to get very simple cartilage piercings. She went first and everything went fine. I am a bit of a needle phobic so I was quite nervous, but the piercer was a bit short with me and reminded me that she just wanted to get out of there for her lunch break. That is fine - I understand needing a break after a long morning for sure. However, I ended up deciding not to go through with it, which seemed fine. As I went to leave, I was asked to pay for the piercing, even though I hadn't gone through with it. 1. I was NEVER made aware of this when I was sitting in the chair, deciding whether or not to get it done, if I had been, I would have absolutely sucked it up and gone through with it and not wasted my money. 2. They claimed that she had "gotten ready for me", but she hadn't even taken the needle or earring out when I decided that I wasn't going to do it. Plus, the whole endeavor took about 3 minutes or less, and I'm pretty sure 3 minutes was not worth the £20 I paid. I went to this place based on a friend's referral but I was very disappointed with this unfair policy and the customer service. **Just be aware, if you go here and change your mind, you will have to pay. read more
