I have been thinking quite a lot recently about getting a tattoo and so I have been asking around about which tattoo studio would be best and Red, Hot and Blue Tattoo was the firm favourite. Several of my friends have had tattoos done here and have raved about the tattoo artists working here, and so this is definitely the place I am going to get mine done. Situated in the Tollcross area of Edinburgh, Red, Hot and Blue Tattoo is just a short walk from the city centre and so it is a convenient place to reach. They have a really great studio inside which shows hundred of different tattoo designs, all of them beautifully drawn. I visited this store just to see what kind of designs they do and I completely fell in love with a butterfly design of theirs which I am certain is the one I am going to get - it is gorgeous! The staff here were all lovely and one woman look the time to talk me through the tattoo process and she made me feel really at ease and so I am going to make an appointment with her to get it done. The prices for tattoos at Red, Hot and Blue are really reasonable and it would be difficult to find a tattoo place in Edinburgh which was as cheap and performed such great work. read more

Sadly, I can't give a full first-hand experience of this place, but that's just because, as of yet, I am untattoed. But I can say, from first-hand experience, that their work is brilliant. Two friends of mine got their tattoos there and they are really beautiful. And they didn't have any horror stories, either. Their skin didn't flake off or turn green. Their skin stayed exactly the colour it should've, minus the ink, of course. I think tattoo-parlours mainly get their rep from word-of-mouth. So, this mouth says that Red Hot + Blue Tattoo is good to go. And the eyes attached to this head which has this mouth has seen the beautiful artwork they've produced. One of my friends got a stylized owl tattooed on her upper thigh, while my other friend had a feather he'd drawn himself (with a fountain pen) tattooed in brown ink (first for me there: I'd never seen a brown tattoo before). So, if you've decided that your skin's become quite boring and want to revamp it with some very permanent artwork, then give this place a chance. read more

Let me start this review by saying I am living in Los Angeles and intended to get a tattoo done here in LA before heading to Edinburgh for the Fringe. I arranged with a tattoo artist here to create my tattoo and he was completely unprofessional. He told me he would be done in a week and then he'd stall. Then he'd stall again. During my consultation he was more interested in his cigarette breaks than he was in creating my tattoo. And he was going to charge me a fortune! I finally had the genius idea to get my tattoo done WHILE in Edinburgh. I can across Red, Hot and Blue on my Yelp search and saw that they came highly recommended. I really liked the designs of the artists on the site, but I was particularly attracted to Kerry's work. She emphasized black and white and had some really strong line work. Since I wanted to get a mandala, I figured she'd be the right artist for me. As soon as I met Kerry, she was excited and enthusiastic about my tattoo! She did exactly what I hoped which was to take my design and make it sing. She came up with this incredible design and found a great way to fit them between my two existing tattoos and really make it seem like they were flowing within them. I also have to say that Kerry's professionalism was second to none-as soon as I got there she was ready to work. There was not time wasted at all. But while we were working, she was very good at making me comfortable with pleasant conversation-as was Alex, another extremely talented tattoo artist who specializes in portrait work. We were able to break up my elaborate work into two sessions and get the entire project done before I left for the U.S.! My tattoo is healing nicely. I highly recommend Kerry for your tattoo if you are considering her. I had been thinking about getting a bit done to an old tattoo for a while and woke up one monday morning thinking lets get this show on the road. A quick phone call and I had a slot at 1600 that day. Showed up on time and after a quick chat with the guy at the desk and then Drew (I think) it was all systems go! a clean studio with plenty of distractions and the job was done in less than an hour. They gave great advice on after care and now 2 1/2 weeks later the piece looks great. About a year ago I got a custom design on my back, in a pretty reputable studio in Aberdeen - and they didn't really give me much after care advice, which is a shame as its not looking that great - I will probably head back to RH&BT to get it fixed. You do pay a premium for this service. read more

My husband and I have got a thing for tattoos, I like them small and feminine, he likes them big and unusual. About a year ago, my mother in law, told us about a new tattoo studio she had heard off called Red Hot and Blue Tattoo. She passed it every day on the way to work and felt it looked nice. We decided to go along, Initially so I could get a small tattoo on my back. And then so my husband could get a sleeve tattoo. My experience of the place is, my tatooist was the most painful tatooist I have ever been to, and this was tattoo number 6! It is a small establishment very tastefully decorated with pictures and folders of tattoos on the table. There were pictures hanging on the walls that you could flick through as well. The establishment was clean and equipment was opened from sterilised packets in front of us. The furniture was funky and modern and the tatooists were friendly and pleasant. Displaying their work on their bodies. My husbands tattoo cost over £400, I have since been told that this was a reasonable price. He went in 3 different sessions. His only downside is that he feels his tattoo is quite patchy. It is a busy tattooist but you can normally get a space for that week. The minimum cost of a tattoo here will be £30. read more

I was recently tattooed at Red, Hot and Blue and I left extremely unsatisfied!!! I received a gift voucher for Christmas for £100 to be used at Red, Hot and Blue on the recommendation of an ex staff member. Prior to visiting the shop I had decided on a design to be tattooed, this was a blue line drawing of an eagle from a pictish standing stone, roughly 5 by 3 inches. When booking the tattoo I visited the shop and the artist was busy so unable to engage in a consultation. The lady on reception who was very nice instead popped through to speak to the artist (Alec) who said the voucher would more than cover it. On arrival to the shop on the day that I was due to be tattooed (09/02/15) I was asked to sit and wait by the same lady on reception. I have spend quite a few hours being tattooed in the past so was aware of the process, filling in the form etc. On meeting the artist, who I had decided on due to researching his work online, he firstly didn't even have the manors to say hello, never introduced himself but asked me to come through to his station. The appointment was at 10.30 and artist spend the first 10 minutes creating the stencil. The artist placed the stencil and I asked it to be moved an inch further up the back on my calf, all as to be expected. The tattoo took roughly 20 minutes to do. At first I didn't really take into account the time taken as I was like what I usually am when just finished being tattooed, very excited. It was only on walking back to my car I checked the time and was shocked that it was just before 11.00. On the drive home I became very irritated at the price I had been charged, £100 for barely 20 minutes work. So I called the shop and was put through to the artist. I explained that I was happy with the work but felt I had been ripped off. The artist said that he charged a £75 minimum, even if anyone wanted the smallest star and that the extra money had gone towards creating the stencil etc.Furthermore the artist stated he was very fast. I was very shocked by this statement especially as I felt the stenciling shouldn't of really been brought into it. From visiting other shops in Edinburgh I had a rough understanding that the general price for tattooing was £80 - £100 per hour. The tattoo is now healing and on closer inspection there is a mistake on the tattoo which has come to irritate me greatly. I would not recommend this shop to anyone, firstly due to the price as I felt I was ripped off, the rude nature of the artist and the fact that there is a mistake in the tattoo!!! read more

I got my first tattoo in Red Hot and Blue several years ago from Sarah Schor. I was amazed at her work considering at the time she had only been tattooing a short period of time, if I rememer correctly from our conversation,she didn't even intend on being a tattooist, she entered the shop to enquire about collaborating with Paul! I was and am still so happy with my tattoo. A year or so later after Sarah had moved on, I got my ribs tattooed by Paul, he was great, good fun and gave me a brilliant old school piece. I went to RH&B for my second tattoo, only a small one -- I was with two friends, a bloke and a girl, also being tattooed. My female friend was having two large tattoos done on her feet so all in all we were there for several hours. We were all tattooed by the same tattooist, Sarah, who was lovely -- we had a great chat with her and she didn't seem fazed by the fact that we all came along together/were hanging around for ages etc. Her tattoos were all really beautifully done, we were all chuffed with them, and the price was great too -- Sarah had also squeezed us in at v short notice which was great of her. HOWEVER, when we came back upstairs to reception to pay/buy Tattoo Goo, it was a different story!! Two of the guys who worked there -- both tattooists I think though one was obviously on reception duty that day -- were REALLY unpleasant and sexist to my female friend and I. They were having a great chat with our male friend but whenever we spoke or tried to join in we were subjected to sexist crap from them. We were told we looked really tired from being tattooed and we obviously "couldn't take it" because we were women; they seemed to have some in-joke they kept referring to whenever we spoke, too. They also proceeded to explain tattoo aftercare to us literally in words of one syllable even though we told them we'd both been tattooed before and knew what to do. They were incredibly patronising and rude. I'm really torn because I now want further tattoos and don't know whether to go back to RH&B or not. Sarah was fab, the studio is really clean and pleasant to be in and the tattoos she did for all of us kick ass. But I really don't want to be subjected to crap from the male tattooists again. Clean, friendly and professional tattoo studio, specialising in high colour pieces, and a lot of intricate work. From the various tattoo pieces I have seen, mostly done by Jason, the standard is exceptionally high and the artwork is beautiful. Whether you want a brand new design, old tattoos transformed into new ones, or just something small and simple, this is a great place to go. Prices are not expensive, as tattoos in general in Edinburgh (for a good studio and good artists) cost a minimum of £25 for a small design, and to be honest you get what you pay for so I am more than happy to pay good money to ensure that the work that will be with me forever is really worth it. read more

Just had my japanese geisha done on my back,tattoo'd by Jason.This is my 6th tattoo but my first time at Red Hot and Blue.I wouldnt go anywhere else in Edinburgh and would highly recommed this shop.The art work is amazing,and if you want a unique piece this is the place to go.The shop in clean,the people are friendly,open and honest in any tattoo advise they give you.They dont just do any old tat's there and have high standards and wont put thier name to football badges and the like.Overall great experience and already thinking of my next tattoo.! This tattoo studio is second to none in regards to quality of work from Paul.

I have done my tattoo in this studio in 2009 and also suffered sexist comments; he suggested that some girls can't handle tattoos (Girls like me!). Also I was a little annoyed to witness the two of them aggressively gossiping about a girl while I was waiting to do my tattoo. I came to my appointment to check his design first (Jason) and, when I mentioned that I wanted to discuss about it because I had found something different; he mentioned that I left for the last minute. But I was on time for my appointment and I have been told that I could discuss it on the day if necessary; it is my body after all and it wasn't a major change, just some details! At the end the tattoo was OK and it was what I wanted, but due to the treatment received, I am never coming back to this studio again. Thinking back, maybe he got offended because I did not use his design, which wasn't bad, but it wasn't what I had in mind. Maybe that's why he disrespected me, who knows.
