I was in between hairdressers, and decided to cut my own hair - big mistake - ended up with a horrible mullet-like mess :) My friend who has been going here since the late '90's told me to call and make an appt. She had been trying to get me to go here for years, but I was loyal to my own hairdresser til she moved : ( I looked on this site and was nervous because of the bad review below, but I trusted my friend . I HAVE NOW FOUND MY NEW HOME!! When I walked in, it immediately felt like a friendly atmosphere - people in the chairs were talking to each other, and the stylists were so friendly. They took me within 5 minutes of my appointment (have had to wait over 20 minutes at other salons). The owner Amy came over and introduced herself (she is a sweetie). I had my hair cut by another stylist named Amy, and she was amazing. We talked about my options and basically my only choice was a stacked bob (yes, that's how bad my hair was LOL). I also wanted foils to make it brighter. She showed me how it would look short with clips and spent more time than any other hairdresser explaining the process of foiling. I work in Back Bay and the prices they charge for foils on Newbury St, etc.) are outrageous compared to Studio. All the stylists work so well together - when my timer went off, Ashley (another stylist), washed out my foils and gave me a deep conditioning treatment (in between taking care of her own clients). I asked about shampoos, products, etc, and Amy/Ashley recommended several options - never felt pressured, but because they explained the different options and results I felt confident buying from them. I am so happy and have received so many compliments from my friends and people at work. My hair feels smooth and healthy. If you are looking for a small, friendly,family-atmosphere this is the place. If you're looking for a high-end, fancy-francy boutique like they make fun of on Saturday Night Life, then don't go here. I used to have a friend come to my home for all my hair needs, but with a one-year old son at home I decided getting to the salon would be a nice break. When I walked into Studio Hair Design, the employees were lively, customers and the hair dressers were chatting away, and music was upbeat in the background. I had Amy D. for my appointment and she was very prompt... it was nice to not have to wait around until 15-20minutes after I scheduled an appointment. I did not know specifically want I wanted to do with my hair, so I put it in Amy's hands... she took off about 4 inches and added some highlights... a little styling and wahla!! I LOVE IT! She knew just what to do for my hair thickness, and my face shape. Halfway through my appointment a grandmother came in with her two grandchildren. I was a little nervous that they were going to cause chaos and ruin my relaxing, fun day out at the salon - but owner Amy R and one of the other employees were on top of their game!! They gave the two girls manican heads, spray bottles and brushes and let the girls play hairdresser! The girls loved it, it kept them occupied and it gave the grandmother time to enjoy her appointment. All of the girls at Stuido are so friendly! I was just reading the reviews on Studio Hair Design, and not only is the person that wrote the bad review so wrong about this place, i happened to be sitting in the seat beside her when this issue she claimed happened.. First and foremost this place is not fifty.. it is one of the cleanest salon i've been in.. Salon has class and style. Second.. the staff and i know each and other one of them, are professional, pleasure, do there utmost to service there clients.. not once in the past 20 years have i ever had a problem with the salon. So people look for things for free.. I seat there and listen to this women bitch and complain the long time, well Ashley who i was impressed but the way she handle herself.. Explain over and over the policy, and the pricing and the girl TOLD her to do it.. then right after the application was put on she wanted her to stop.. if you ask me she was looking for the service free.. she knew what to do after explain how much, how it works, and how long the product will last she had the choice at that point to not have it done and I HEARD HER SAY OK GO AHEAD AND DO IT... so if it was so costly why tell someone to do it.. so lastly.. I LOVE THIS SALON AND ITS PEOPLE WHO SERVE US and there pricing is below average for the service there provide and there are as good or better then Newbury St. Jean read more

As a client of Studio Hair Design for over 14 years, I am compelled to comment on Sandra G's review from 4/26/14 because I feel it is an inaccurate and unfair portrayal of this salon. In all the time I have been a client, I have never found the salon to be dirty and it certainly is not dumpy. On the contrary, It is an extremely clean, lovely, welcoming and friendly place with immensely talented stylists. They are cutting edge without the snobbery and intimidation of Newbury St. or other so called "high end" salons. Every one of the women who work there are well trained in the latest techniques; can recommend what works best for your hair type/face shape, etc. and then perfectly execute the style you've both agreed on. I have never heard any stylist trying to pressure any client into anything. If you're looking for a Newbury Street-style salon, this is probably not where you belong. But if you're looking for a place where you can receive excellent service from talented stylists with products that aren't harmful to your well being and at a fair price to boot (high prices don't always equate to quality), this is a place well worth trying. read more

I've been a client at Studio Hair Design for quite some time now. Before finding them I bounced around from salon to salon, which was far from ideal for me. You get a truly relaxing salon experience with each visit. It's always nice to escape to SHD for comfortable chatter, and of course to be pampered! I"ve never had a bad experience with any of the girls. I see Amy D for my normal cuts and colors. She is amazing and is truthful with what style she thinks will work for your hair. I've never been disappointed with the outcome! I've been so satisfied with the girls work that I had them do all the hair for my wedding, and friends weddings after that. Of course everyone looked amazing each time! Updos can be tricky with each different hair type, and they've never ceased to amaze me with new and different styles. Trust me, you will not be disappointed if you give the girls at Studio Hair Design a shot! read more

I have been a client of SHD for over 25 + years, each and every time I arrive at SHD they treat me like a new client, discussing what I was looking for, what was working with my hair and what wasn't. They take the time to listen and its a team effort there, bouncing ideas off each other if your looking for something new. I have had each of the fantastic designers work on my hair and have always had the best experience. They are knowledgeable, cutting edge, and you will feel comfortable !! Not pushy, uptight or pressured... This week Ashley stayed late for me to squeeze me in as my schedule was crazy with my son's graduation on Friday, and working FT with a new house to unpack and settle in. I Love Studio Hair Design and all the stylists who work there especially the owner Amy R. I have been getting my hair cut & colored by her for 25+ years including perms & keratin treatments. It's not a huge salon it is comfy, clean and affordable. They insist on keeping up their training on all the latest trends in styles & coloring. They will honestly let you know if a style or color is right for your hair type & skin tone and explain to you in detail how to get the look at home yourself. The prices are fair & the employees are the nicest girls around, they even offered to walk me to my car with an umbrella one rainy day! I'm not sure who Sara S. had for a stylist, but I have had excellent results when getting my hair blown out. I have curly/wavy/ somewhat frizzy hair. The blow out can last for several days depending on the humidity. The owner Amy R. is a superb colorist and stylist. I get RAVE refuse on my color. Been going to this salon for years. Thankfully I found a place with excellent stylist and low turnover. read more
