I am a relatively new resident of Bellingham and the Pacific NW. I lived in South Florida a very long time (Miami and Boca Raton). Some of the finest hairstylists in the country are available on Miami Beach and in Boca. My former stylist did hair for years on Miami Beach and many of his clients are celebrities. Some fly him to locations to do their hair. I therefore assumed it was going to be a challenge to find someone in Bellingham. Not so....What an extremely exciting occurrence for me when I found Shae at Studio Galactica. Shae's business name is "Shae Cafe" and she is among several excellent hair designers at Studio Galactica. She is excellent in all areas of her profession: hair cutting, hair creations and design,coloring and waxing. My partner (who vowed no one can cut his hair correctly) reluctantly (on my urging) gave Shae a try. He told her recently, "The haircut you gave me is the best haircut I have ever had." Pretty much says it all. One last comment, besides excellent in her hair styling skills; Shae is bright, personable, sweet, kind, and fun to be around. Don't let her age fool you." First off I, a dude and I never go to a studio to get my hair done I either do it myself, have a girlfriend cut it, or just go to whatever place works. I had a certain style that i wanted done and it was out of girlfrfiends capabilities and I didnt want some old person or barber doing it because i didnt think they would be able to do it right. I wanted a, I guess the best I can describe it is an "emo" hairstyle. Anyway I called around different places talking to different people at different studios an d Diedra at Galactica kept coming up. This is my second time with her in 3 months and both times I was extrremely happy. The first time I brought in 3 pics off of the internet and wanted a combo of the 3 and she did it better than I could have imagined. This time I was planning on bringing the same pics but I forgot them at home and she ended up doing an even cooler cut and style than my first time. I couldnt be more stoked. Im going here from now on....Oh and I assumed a cut, wash, style, flatiron, blowdry, with a few products would be fairly pricy but it was a straight up $30 bucks!! Hell yeah. I started going to Studio Galactica summer of 2002. I was in college at the time, and all my friends raved about Mandy. I have to say it was the first time in my life I had a cut I LOVED, and it was my first color job as well. I had another beautician ask who I had do my hair b/c the color was so good. My hair was always so nice that my mom started driving up to Bellingham (from 3 hours away) just to use Mandy. She has cut my daughter's hair and my husband's. I think the only reason I never want to leave Bellingham is because I would not be able to transplant Studio Galactica to where ever we would move. After 8 years of Studio Galactica services, I can't rave enough about the it, and Mandy. If you want a FABULOUS cut/color or wax, from really cool people, with great business skills, and a fun atmosphere, and great prices, go here. The only thing I think I would change are the prices--Mandy and her skills are worth a heck of a lot more than what she charges. Cheers! read more

I would definitely recommend this salon to a friend. Mandy cut my hair, did exactly what I asked for, was quick but not in a hurry, and was so easy to casually chat with. The price for a haircut was also really reasonable and I found the two girls I saw working there to be very down to earth and friendly. I had cash with me but seem to remember them not taking cards when I was there previously. I absolutely love that they are a no tipping salon because I hate giving tips out of obligation. Eliminating the whole tip-giving scenario makes my salon experience even more enjoyable. Having said that, I really have had a great experience there and that's why I'm writing this glowing review. It is well deserved. In addition, the location is easy to get to and there is plenty of street parking. The salon is across from the Public Market which is convenient if you also want to have a snack or buy cute things at Wild Blueberries. read more

My experience at Studio Galactica was outstanding. My stylist, Kimberly R., was incredibly talented. She gave me the best haircut/color that I have ever had--and I have had my fair share of haircuts from a number of good stylists all over the country! I have received numerous compliments from complete strangers. But not only was my stylist brilliant, she was also a great listener. I had a specific cut that I was looking for and she nailed it. Thank you Kimberly! P.S. Studio Galactica also offers an amazing line of hair products called "evo." The conditioner that I purchased has produced amazing results. I don't want to inspire unrealistic expectations in anyone, but I swear that Deirdre could really see the cut in my mind's eye and was therefore able to execute it flawlessly. It was pure magic. Ok, it might have just been her great communication skills, but a girl can pretend. Studio Galactica employs hair stylists who actively listen and LEARN about their guest before picking up the scissors. It doesn't matter how talented someone is with shears - if a stylist does not get the guests vision, it does not work for either party. I asked all sorts of questions about hair care and styling suggestions, and what little she didn't know she asked another stylist for advice on. I've passed her cards onto friends and will definitely be back for another cut. Have I mentioned that a cut is $35, and they have a strict No-Tip policy? read more

When I first moved to B'ham a year and a half ago, a friend recommended Studio Galactica and I'm so glad I went! I've been getting my hair cut by Deirdre ever since. I always leave looking and feeling good, and she gives me exactly what I want! Last March, I had her give me highlights before my brother's wedding. I'd never had professional highlights before, so I was nervous getting them done- but they looked awesome! Really natural, but def improved my look... just what I was going for. The salon has a funky decor that feels edgy and cool... Each stylist there has hip hair, which is huge to me! I like going to a place where the stylists are "with it" and aren't going to give me a haircut from 10 years ago! ;) I appreciate the "no tipping" rule, although I always want to tip! read more

I think we've all had enough horrible hair cuts to know that cutting hair isn't as easy as you'd think it would be. When I first moved to Bellingham, it took multiple botched hair cuts for me to find Mandy at Studio Galactica. Not only is she friendly, the decor in her store is fantastic and she actually knows what she is doing. Perhaps more important than her ability to pull off flawless and edgy cuts, is the fact that she really knows what she is doing. Some people have hair styling down and can do some neat stuff, but don't know much about the technical side of hairdressing. It sounds silly, but believe me, when you're dealing with frizzy, thin, thick, damaged, or cow-licky hair, you need someone who really knows what they're doing. Trying to find a new salon after moving the town you've lived in your whole life is a terrible process, but I am so lucky I found Studio Galactica! I went there first to get my grown out bangs cut into a vintage straight across cut, which took a lot of guts for me, and they turned out fantastic. I can trust any stylist there and I have gone to almost all of them for a trim, though I see Shae most frequently and she always does a fantastic job. I recommend this salon to everyone I know, especially college students because they have great prices and are a no tipping salon (I get my bang cuts for only $5). They are exactly where to go if you love to do unique and crazy things with your hair, things that you just can't trust anyone with! read more

I am so impressed! It is difficult to change hairstylists-mine has moved across the state, so need to find new one. Hair is short, and grows fast. Studio Galactica is a welcoming place. Staff is supportive of one another- I really liked the owner- did a great job on my hair-nailed it! She was quick to recommend a colleague in her absence, which is cool. She is the owner, so I trust their work must be up to her standard...of course I don't want to chair hop! This is a no-tipping business, which left me feeling I ripped her off! Work was definitely tip worthy! Fair prices, competitive with other downtown full service salons where tipping is also expected. WiCkEd place! I just got my hair chopped off by the stylist Deirdre yesterday! She is awesome at cutting hair! she was kool, fast and knows what she's doing! I'm impressed by far! I never go to hair salons but had to cause i couldn't think of how to fix my hair at this point, and I'm really glad i went here! i showed her a couple pics of more along the styles i was thinking, and she made it look better! and knew what to do! i would highly suggest if in need of a chop check this shop out! Also my sister goes here and has had color and highlights done and it looks WiCkEd every time! Also they have fair prices! I have been going to Mandy since a few months after she opened and even though I now live in Seattle I drive to Bellingham to get my hair done, she is that good. I never really know what I want but Mandy always has great suggestions and I come out looking and feeling great! She has highlighted my hair twice and the results were excellent both times even though my hair doesn't take color easily. Mandy knows how much I hate to spend a lot of time styling my hair so she gives me cuts and product suggestions that give me great hair without a lot of work. So far, everyone I have sent to Studio Galactica has been super happy with their result, even my mother who never gets her hair done professionally. read more

Best. Salon. EVER!!! I'm from Vancouver BC and I used to spend upwards of $200+ to get my hair done at the top spas. And then I came to school at Western, so I decided I should get a local stylist...tried Studio Galactica after seeing an ad on a bulletin board, figured what have I got to lose? Man, I got the best hair I've ever had in my life for a fraction of the price! Daniella is my hairdresser now, I will come to see her for my hair even when I move back home. She introduced me to razor haircuts, which is precisely 1000X better than scissor cuts. She's awesome with cuts, colors...and eyebrows too! And so friendly! And they all refuse to take tips! Studio Galactica, and the owner Mandy in particular, has been my go-to hair cutting place for 10+ years, maybe even 15 years. Not only do I leave feeling heard, getting the haircut I want for my not so easy to cut hair (it is baby fine), but I also feel very safe during this Covid-19 run. Clients are instructed to enter only within 5 minutes of their appointment, wear masks, and social distance. The air exchange and filtration has been updated to improve safety, too. Employees take the utmost precautions as well. The place is cute, clean, and comfortable. I feel good entering, and even better after the haircut. I do not know what I would do without Studio Galactica and Mandy! read more

As a person with curly hair, I hate having it cut. I dread the results. Plus, hairstylists like to do weird things afterwards that make me look like a poodle that stuck its tongue in an electric socket. Floofy and poofy doesn't begin to describe it. Yeah, hair is a pretty traumatic issue with me. Studio Galactica is the first place I've found that doesn't make me cringe when it's time for a trim. Deirdre usually takes care of me and she is awesome. I look great every time. She takes the time to listen to me. She even read through a book on curly hair (Curl Talk) that I brought it. Studio Galactica was definitely the place for me - and anyone! - to go for an excellent, laid back no-stress haircut. I have seriously curly hair and took a chance on this place after reading so many awesome reviews... I was totally NOT let down. Daniela is a magician with the shears. She knew exactly how to cut my hair and made what I thought was going to be a 'conservative" cut sassy and sexy, something I never thought imaginable with my previously untamed mangled locks. First haircut I've felt really good about in probably seven years. I had my haircut by Kimberly and she is very good. She was very attentive to detail and did a great job taming my crazy hair. I described very briefly what I wanted and it looks better then I could have imagined. Normally I feel like my hair needs a week or so to grow out and 'recover' from a haircut, but Kimberly made it look really awesome right out the door! Good prices and they are open seven days a week. They do take walk-ins but you are probably better off giving them a call and getting an appointment. Bring cash. read more

I've only had my hair professionally cut a handfull of times in my 27 years. My friend gave me the "gift of a real haircut" for my last birthday. My appointment was with Mandy and from the moment I walked into her room, adorned with thrift store figurines and books about suri cruise, I knew it would be a great experience. I laughed and talked so comfortably with Mandy the whole time and she cut my hair perfectly. She listened to what I wanted and gave her expert suggestions for my hair type. I came from San Diego and had a difficult time finding a hair salon in town. Went to some really high-end and stuffy businesses and finally found Studio Galactica. Mandy, the owner is not only extremely experienced and knowledgeable, but personable and fun as well. The prices are great and the service is outstanding. Don't let the word get out because then we will all be waiting in line for this amazing service and cut.
