My first visit to Studio 58 in downtown Hilo was great. My stylist was Manny and I had a shampoo, haircut and blow out/curl. I'm a kupuna with very thin hair past my shoulders. He listened carefully to what I wanted. I have been trying to find a good salon in Hilo for a while now since Kathy Romero, who did my hair since 1990, retired. I've been getting my hair done when I travel to Honolulu and that's not as often as my hair needs attention. Now I can trust in Studio 58 as my place and Manny as my stylist. I haven't had a professional haircut in over a year. But I was pleased with the hair massage & layered cut I received. When he was styling my hair he offered me either curly or straight. I went with curly, but realized I didn't like it when he was more than halfway thru. He kindly was like well I'll just change it. He is to the point & wants the customer happy. He called it a "mommy makeover." Manuel the owner cut my hair, I was kinda scared to have him do it. Due to negative reviews about him. However, he was awesome! His personality is spunky. He is blunt, but funny & does not force conversation. I hate feeling like we need to chat just because you're cutting my hair. read more

I was able to get in super last minute for a cut and Manuel was AMAZING. Ive always had super long hair and just done trims myself because of fear it would be hacked off but after 10+ years with no real styling I was looking like cousin it. It's been about a year since I got my hair even trimmed and it was pretty out of control and in need of serious TLC. I called yesterday just to ask if they had any last minute appointments and they were able to get me at noon. I was a few minutes early because I wasn't sure where I was going. I ended up having to wait a few extra minutes, which I was fine with since I was so excited they were able to fit me in same day and I really needed it. I showed some pictures on my phone to Manny when he asked what I wanted, and then just asked him to do whatever he wanted with my hair. He washed, cut, and styled it and I LOVE it! My old hair stylist moved to kona (hence why I put it off for so long) but I'll definitely be coming back. The prices were very reasonable, especially for the experience. Me and my grandma came to visit and was recommended highly & when I made an appointment with Manny Olivera he seemed kind. when we went to the salon we were waiting outside for 30 min. I called and was sent to voicemail, texted and no response and even now 7 hrs later, no response, no apology nothing. I've been to this salon twice recently. While I adored my stylist, I was very disappointed with the lack of COVID precautions. The first time I was in everything was great, masks were worn by everyone, and I felt safe enough to come back with my 81 year old mother. However, when I did return with my mother, one of the stylists was not wearing a mask, nor was the woman he was working on. His station was right as you walk in the door so everyone had to pass within 6 feet of them when entering or exiting. I realize there are some people who cannot wear masks for health reasons but when you are working so closely with someone, literally leaning over them, you should absolutely have some type of face covering on. As I said, I loved my stylist, I loved what she did with my hair, but will probably not go back for this reason. read more

I tell him what I want to look like, and he delivers every, single time. The appointment is within the week from my call. His fees are more than reasonable for his masterpieces. It never fails that when I leave the salon, people will stop and take the time to compliment me. I LOVE the attention. To top it all off, Manny is a brutally honest person that carries meaningful conversation while he works his magic. He did justice to my massive mane after it sailed across the Pacific Ocean exposed to the brutal sun - it was dry, brittle with nasty grow out. He cut it, colored it, and added highlights. Pricing was average, meaning there wasn't an island premium. Located in the heart of Hilo, Manual's salon is Island Chic, palm plants, high ceilings, hardwoods and clean.
