I can't say enough great things about this Jiu Jitsu studio! From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed into this amazing community, and it's been nothing but an amazing experience since then. The coaches here are absolutely top-notch and THE BEST mentors for our kids. They take the time to teach the techniques, but more importantly, they instill life lessons that go beyond the mat. It's been 1.5 years of our family being with this studio and we are still loving it. I wanted to update our review to give more input on any kiddos who may want to start competing in tournaments. My children are grey/white belts now and competed in about 10 tournaments last year while they were white belts. Their coaches Professor Dustin & Professor Matt really supported them. The coaches are all very supportive of whatever your competition goals are- they don't push them but will support you if you want it. My kids love Friday Competition Class which is open for any kids who are interested in getting Competition Ready. We have a competition board where we will write down upcoming tournaments and the names of any kids or adults signed up. The families at this studio are all so welcoming and friendly. They are all willing to help and explain the competition culture and competition days are so much fun! The girls love competing because they all do matching braids, it's super cute. My husband also ended up joining Jiu Jitsu in the AM 530 classes and goes consistently 4-5x per week. He loves it for bonding with our children through the sport, for great exercise and he also started competing! He has done 5 competitions and is signed up for 3 more in the next coming years. My son has now officially been training at Studio 33 for a year. The honeymoon stage is over and we still love this gym. We wanted our 8 year old son to try a sport outside of soccer and a sport that would challenge him and jiu jitsu has all those components and more. We are so proud to be a part of the Studio 33 family! All 4 of my kids train here, plus I just recently joined in on the fun. It's been a full year for my older 3, my youngest is about 3-4 months behind them, and I'm just starting out. Since day 1, we were welcomed with smiles and open arms. Everyone here is so friendly, welcoming, and supportive- from the coaches to the students to the parents/family members observing on the side. It's such a great family-friendly environment! Coaches Dustin and Matt are all around just genuinely good people. It's obvious they love what they do. The patience they have and the support they give in imparting their knowledge is motivating not only to the students but to observers as well. They make a continuous effort to know and engage with each student. I also appreciate the pep talks they give at the end of class. I couldn't have enough good things to say about Studio 33. I began training in September so just at the beginning of my journey as a white belt, but I've been realizing how lucky I am to have landed here. The professors and coaches here are second to none. I've taken classes with Dustin, Matt, Sofia and Kalo and they all show great individual attention to the students who walk in to their classes and encourage and support you throughout. They watch your drills and your rolls and offer feedback throughout. I've seen all of them stay after to demonstrate techniques a student had questions about or walk through with them. The environment is fun, respectful and supportive, full of comradery. When I started I was one of only a handful of women attending some of the evening classes at the studio but that has not mattered. Everyone here has a mentor mentality- an attitude that isn't prevalent on the mat everywhere but it is here. That was probably the biggest factor that has made me want to stick with it and grow as a jiu jitsu practitioner! They push me to improve myself and my technique but are also patient and depending on the personality of the woman I have seen everyone adapt to different levels of comfort and ability. The gym is always clean and the mat space is great, you're not often bumping into anyone else. They have weekly open mats so even if you have friends training at other gyms they're encouraged to attend and help build the SD BJJ community together- iron sharpening iron. He is the type of teacher who continues to learn himself and passes that knowledge on to his a students. There is a well rounded coaching philosophy at this gym where we practice Jiujitsu from the standing position and on the ground techniques. You will learn judo and wrestling takedowns, and an encyclopedia of ground fighting techniques. Awesome people, I walk in one day around 1130am because I just stop by HANS AND HARRY BAKERY for a muffin . As I walked up to the gym the instructor greeted me while he was teaching a class and welcomed me with open arms! It was awesome to see that I was welcomed in to a gym that I first was scared and alittle intimidated watching them choke and strangle eachother. But I watch UFC and I recognized all the moves they were performing on eachother and it was amazing to watch 1st hand and the experience that the coach and students had. I did martial arts my whole life but no ground grappling at all. The instructors are friendly, professional and make commendable efforts to get to know students to ensure that the jiu jitsu journey is tailored to the individual learning style. This is my 2nd bjj school and I am definitely staying for the long term. My family is now enrolled, as the instructors have created a great family atmosphere to include kids and women. The location is central and nearby freeways is a bonus. The actual facility is a bit difficult to find, so a few more signs could be helpful. But, the nearby restaurants in the strip mall, which include Hans and Harry's, Starbucks, etc., are great for an after workout visit.
