THIS IS GOING TO BE A LONG YET HONEST REVIEW/EXPERIENCE:
I've been holding off on this review because I wanted to give a true, honest opinion that wasn't influenced by the joy of something new(if that makes any sense). First of all, this gym was recommended by a friend of mine. I was looking for a new gym once my finances were back in order and that along with location was a big thing. After trying out the more "popular" academies suggested my other friends and yelp, my friend recommended a new gym that had just opened up. I decided to first learn the schedule, then drop by randomly to see how he classes were taught and interaction between the coaches and students. I walked in and was immediately greeted by Christina, she's nice and very welcoming. I told her I just wanted to sit and watch a class, she offered me a seat and a bottle of water while I watched. As I was watching, one of the coaches(a purple belt named Chris) came off the mat, shook my hand and introduced himself and also offered me a drink of water. First impressions are lasting impressions, and my first two impressions were so far so good. The vibe in the gym was very relaxed, very welcoming and overall very comfortable. Most of the time when I walk into a martial art gym I either get the "new guy in school" and it's intimidating or the "territorial" feel from other members that makes me feel unwelcome. I didn't feel that at all. I immediately felt relaxed and watched about 15 minutes of the class, then left to carry on my day. I've done that a few times, going in a different times where classes when scheduled to see the consistency of the vibe I get. Went into the morning class and was immediately greeted by Shawn who is the owners brother and coach david(the brown belt teaching the morning classes) i received the same hospitality through and through. I later learned that they offered a 7!day free trial and I took advantage. They offer loaner GI's for those who do not own a set, and coach Chris assured me that they are cleaned everyday after use. I can attest to that because it smells like laundry detergent and I never broke out in a rash. After signing my waiver, my trial started. As a first time jiu jitsu practitioner I really didn't know what to expect and I was honestly nervous standing against the wall not knowing anyone. Then later, another student came up and introduced himself, then another then another. I was greeted and welcomed warmly, the same exact genuine introduction I received from the coaches. One thing I learned about academies is that the students are a direct reflection of their coaches. I joined a couple days later. I love how Apex doesn't do contracts and understands that life happens and wouldn't kick you into paying something that you can no longer do. So that was a big plus for me, I don't think contracts make anyone comfortable anyways. Fast forward to present day, and in loving the decision I've made. When Apex calls you family, they really mean it. I didn't show up to class a couple of days and Coach Chris contacted me to check on my welfare. I told him what was going on, and he offered an ear to listen. He didn't have to do that at all, but that's just how Professor Tim and all his coaches are. Apex Jiu jitsu is their family, and when you join you become part of that family, and family takes care of each other. Every time I go to class, I'm pushed harder then I've ever have been pushed, almost threw up a few times, left bleeding, bruised, sore and achy. But everytime my teammates and I share laughs and good times, I come home and my wife asks "how was class?" And everytime i respond "it was great!". Apex has really helped me fill a void I was missing, gave me a sense of belonging, and helped me make new friends of different backgrounds, lifestyles and religions. Up to now I'm still greeted with the same welcoming smile and genuine warmth by all the coaches and our team mates. Another plus is that a lot of us are new white belts with little to no experience, so we are all coming up and getting better together. And none of us want to disappoint our coaches. Apex Jiu jitsu cares about their community, their gym, all of their students(kids, kids advance, women and adults) and they love Jiu jitsu. I highly recommend anyone to give Apex a try and use that trial, come in with an open mind and leave your ego at the door and just enjoy. read more
