Loved the bar. We decided to go on a whim waiting for dark and Yupper Light rock hunting. We are so happy we did! First, the bartender was great. She made you feel right at home and super friendly. There was a group of locals that made the bar better with an energy that can only be explained with "if you know, you know". We did not partake in any food but the bartender was making small pizzas in a toaster oven, that looked pretty good for a bar pizza. The place is an unofficial museum dedicated to the old mining days. The bartender was kind enough to light everything up for us in the back and give us a small tour. We are so grateful. The drinks!! My grandmother was born and raised in Ontonagon, when she found out we were going she told me we had to stop at Stubbs! The legend is still living and doing great!! We were greeted by friendly bartenders and other patrons. They told us the story behind the bar and all of the "stuff" everywhere. It really is a museum! It is the place to go if you are staying in Ontonagon for the weekend - you won't be disappointed!!! Ps. It's a cash bar so bring your cash money! read more

Stopped in on vacation Memorial Day for some drinks and to relax. Staff and local customers were friendly, fun and we spent hours there! No food served while we were there but jukebox was going, pool table was busy and all in all a great night. Eclectic decor of: military, motorcycles, firearms, antlers and antique trinkets. But there isn't much else to do in Ontonagon. Food options looked like they were limited to frozen pizza and chips, but it's a bar. This place is the UP. I'm not a local but they treated me and my coworker like we belonged but you could also tell they could put a good hating on an uppity tourist. Sat next to a vietnam vet and his wife and got a little history lesson from Connie the bartender. She's awesome but clearly doesn't take shit from idiots. Bring cash and a handful of "yes ma'ams". Don't be rude and don't look fancy. The music is loud, the place is dark, and the walls covered in guns and death. Just how a proper UP bar should be. Damn I can't wait to go back. read more

How I got there is unimportant. What happened once I did, is. Stubb's was the only bar I checked out in Ontonagon. So much fun, I couldn't leave. For over 4 hours the locals and I talked about everything, shot pool and listened to Johnny Cash and C.C.R. on the juke box. The people were so friendly, I almost stayed in town one extra night. But the road waits for no one. When I wear my shirt from Stubb's people always ask about the place and I tell them about that night, and I tell them - "Go there". The whole Ontonagon area is worth a visit, and Stubb's is a must see. read more

Stopped in on a trip to the Porkies. Reminds me of the bars I loved back on the South side of Chicago, but Stubb's is, as billed, a museum as well. Every square inch is covered with weapons of war, implements and trophies of the hunt and the backwoods life, and relics of the past in the base of the UP. The local customers seemed mildly hostile, but are all bark no bite; and the bartender is a charmer. The beer is good and cold and a third the price you pay back in the city - though at that, they probably figure they're overcharging the tourists. Don't go with an attitude, go with a thirst and soak in the dark beer and atmosphere. All it needs is some kind of bar food. read more

Stopped in last night to have a beer and I can't really say enough good things about this bar. It is a unique gem and a dying breed. While most bars are slowly turning into some random version of an applebees or tgifridays -milquetoast, Stubb's does not argue or make apologies for its history or decor. This place is the real deal. The walls tell great stories. It's darkly lit with an excellent jukebox and very friendly staff. Has a pool table as well. If you are driving through town this is a really cool place to stop. They have local beers on tap for $2.50 a pint. Friendly, cheap, and very interesting -great combo. read more
