I ordered #1 male crabs from Stuarts Fresh Catch 3 times in the last week. Each time, the crabs were generally a good size, with maybe one or two smaller ones, which wasn't a problem. However, during my most recent visit, I received what were clearly #2's instead of the #1's I ordered and paid for. I didn't realize this until I got home. I attempted to call 3 times before driving back to the store, but their phone lines weren't working correctly, no one could hear me on the other end. When I returned, I calmly explained the issue to the young lady at the register. Before I could finish, the gentleman who cooked the crabs rudely interrupted, checked the bag, and insisted on taking me outside to "prove" I had received #1's. However, the measuring tool he used actually confirmed that I was correct--they were not #1's. Despite that, he continued to justify the mistake rather than acknowledging it. I tried to explain my position, but he remained dismissive. I told him I wouldn't be returning and would be disputing the charge since I did not receive what I paid for. He showed no concern and walked back into the building. This experience was disappointing, both in terms of product and customer service. Went to this place brought three piece fish sandwich meal with macaroni and cheese, rice pudding, spoon bread and I ordered a two piece fish sandwich only, spent about 25 dollars and everything I ordered was absolutely disgusting. Don't bring your dog here to eat please don't. The fish had no fish between the skin, the rice pudding had no sugar in it as well as the spoon bread wasn't done and had no sugar. I was in the Richmond area and used to over 20 years ago stop by and eat here. I found out Stuart had died many years ago, and the man who worked with him many many years sold the business. I ordered the oyster dinner with 3 sides. The oyster were way too salty with the breading they used to fry them in so no taste to come through while eating the oyster. Oysters should have a taste of deep seafood, not here the oyster small and breading was soggy on the outside. Forget tasting oysters. The sides spoon bread was too greasy with butter, the green beans too salty, and coke slaw bland. The potato pie had horrible presentation, was too greasy as well. This isn't the original tasting food you would expect from the original owners so don't expect it, and I also noticed the parking lot had no one at the restaurant and it this was during lunch time hours. Was in the highland park area and was craving seafood. Looked up this place because I've passed it several times thinking it was just a fish market and not a restaurant! Came in there were two cashiers one had a mean mug and was very unpleasant to look at did not greet me and didn't look excited to be at work, but the other young lady working the front was nice and even gave me a suggestion since it was my first time.. got the food in a timely fashion I ordered a two fish dinner with shrimp and two sides fries and collard greens... to start the Catfish was soggy and very soft hot sauce couldn't change the taste the fries were crispy but had no seasoning in sight I guess you have to ask for the dry seasoning the collards, hush puppies, and shrimp were decent but by the end of the night I was tossing and turning due to food poisoning. No hoggie bun bread selection. The retail seasonings are a rip off...lightly seasoned flour with no distinctive flavor. Better to but Ardrys or other brands at the market that are less expensive. Should have checked the bag. Ordered a half dozen Jimmies, and got 6 teeny tiny crabs. I was shocked. They were closed by the time I got home and it was Saturday night so I couldn't get anyone on the phone until Monday, they asked me to bring the crabs back. If I still lived on this side of town this would be my go to for seafood. I still go by in the summer even if I'm not close as their crabs are always good. If you call ahead you can make sure that they have the type of crabs you want, i.e. male vs female, large, medium, small. The guys working the crab pots are always friendly and helpful. I've only ever had their crabs but the shrimp inside always looks excellent. We have had great experiences here and I will go out of my way to go back even though we now live 30 minutes away. read more

The fish seasoning and the spoon bread are the best. Along with every side item listed and yes I have eaten every item on the menu in 30 years. Sure there will be times at every restaurant when something did not taste the way you thought it should be. There has to be a medium when serving 1,000 customers a day as to how much seasoning to use Also when you write a bad review also give the establishment a 2nd chance and update your review. It was like anticipating your favorite football team's successful win but only to watch in horror as your team "Ravens" get drug down through the woods by the "Deadskins." Ok... last day in Virginia and was looking for a delicious whitting sandwich before heading back to jersey... it was very hard to find and I thought I found a gold mine..I notice no pics of food were up on yelp so I couldn't use my eyes to help decide. .. very disappointed in my meal. My whitting was the worst fish sandwich I ever had... it was overdone making it too crunchy on the outside and dry as hell on the inside. Now I don't know if that's how their usual customers like it but I'll pass. I will say the flavor was decent and suggest you tell them to fry it light. We like Stuart's, we have been going there for several years. The fish is good, the veggies are pretty good and on a good day, the spoon bread will make you wanna smack your momma. (At least it used to be. Seems like the food isn't as good as it used to be. I'm sure there are different cooks back there now.) My husband likes the bbq so when I stopped by there on the way home today, I got him a bbq meal as he doesn't like seafood. The green beans were good but there was such a tiny bit of bbq in that container! I told the guy I talked to, I can't bring that tiny bit of meat home to my husband! So I went back inside and purchased another 3 bites of bbq for $4.81. (I think the meal was $10.95 before taxes) I realize it is a seafood place so I didn't complain too much but if we ever go back, we will not be buying the bbq. Found this place ducking traffic in Richmond A total find. Good no frills Southern fried fish. Friends local told me one of the owners is almost always around. Which is a good sign. Lots of options. I'm a fish guy so I went in that direction. Had the Lake Trout and it was perfect not over done. Sides were to die for.
