I drive down about once a month from Fredericksburg to buy crab legs, "fresh" fish, and sometimes hot lunch/dinner plates. I've been coming for over 2 years now and my food is ALWAYS made fresh. The service is usually exceptional with the exception of one of the Hispanic males (but I won't let him change the rating). It is carry out only and I suggest bringing a cooler during the hotter months because they won't give you that much ice. In my opinion the shrimp isn't that great (taste farmed raised), but I am very picky about shrimp. The wait time is generally pretty good, but during holidays and nice weather be prepared for a lengthy wait. If it is busy I suggest parking at the goodwill to avoid getting stuck in their small parking lot. You have to ask for cups for sauces on the side and they will charge extra for just about everything else (like bread, lemon etc). They can get a heavy handed with seasoning so I always request very light to light depending on who is taking my order. The establishment is very clean, organized, and well maintained. Large-jumbo crab legs run about $25/lb (now in 2026 price increase) , sometimes they have Dungeness crab legs too. Shrimp varies by size, but roughly $11.99/lb-$22.99/lb. Fish varies from $6.99/lb-$15.99/lb. I've only purchased red snapper (to cook at home) and it did not taste great to me. First time here, ordered the fried clam strips ($4.99) and the #1 special which was fried fish, shrimp and fries. The fries were good (and hot) the clams were decent the fish was very bland and the shrimp were tasty but they did not clean the digestive tract aka the poop shoot in the shrimp. Nasty. Had to ask for plastic fork and napkins. They did not offer any ketchup for the fries or tarter sauce/seafood sauce for the seafood. There were slices of white bread in the special #1. When I got to the car both Styrofoam packages were seriously deformed due to the heat of the food inside despite a whole or two poked in the side. If they changed from Styrofoam packaging offered packets of condiments and cleaned their shrimp, perhaps I would go back. read more

I started picking steamed, hard-shell crabs when I was six. Now I'm in my seventies. So I know about crab sizes and what the steamed, meat texture should be. Twice in the last few weeks I've ordered the hard-shells from the Bay Seafood Market and they have been quite delicious. The best I've had in many years and especially the best in the Richmond area. Both times the crabes were steamed hot and ready to go at the scheduled pick-up time. Both times they were all number-one males like I ordered and not a mix of the number ones and smaller. Both times the meat was firm and sweet not like the soft and mushy meat I've had from other Richmond dealers in the past. I highly recommend Bay Seafood Market for the best crabs in the area. We purchased a dozen live crabs today. After getting home we noticed 5 of them were missing one or both claws. You pay for them by the dozen, not by the pound. We called Bay Seafood to complain. They said sorry, sometimes they're missing claws. That's not the right answer. If they're missing claws you charge by the pound or pick them clean for meat. You don't sell them as whole crabs. We expected the staff to say "sorry, we'll check them better next time and throw in a few extra for you". He said "they come that way, sorry". We won't be going back. My husband and I have been eating blue crab our whole lives. We have never been given a pile of crabs with Hal Fb of them missing their claws. Terrible customer service. read more

I have been here twice and I am from a part of VA that boarders Maryland where crabs are a big deal so it can be very easy to disappoint. Now that I live in Richmond it's hard to find the seafood I tend to like. This place made me so happy! The prices are fair I don't feel like I had to take out a second mortgage to buy crabs and I have bought from them twice and haven't had a bad crab yet! The regular season option is perfect for me. This place is all around outstanding! One of the best fish market restaurants in the city. It's always impeccably clean and the service is always friendly. Unlike most other markets in the area, this place is completely devoid of the characteristic fishy smell. The fish is always cooked fresh and right in front of you for a great price. A fish sandwich, fries, and a canned soda are about $6.50 (and that's with tax included). Everything is always piping hot and served with your choice of condiments and seasonings, all conveniently located on the counter. In need of some steamed blue crabs to devour? Bay seafood is amazing. A half dozen male blue crabs were $17 and worth every penny. Fresh blue crab is hard to find. This location seemed a little sketchy to me, but the shrimp and crabs are definitely fresh. They also offered some prepared fried meals for those not looking to cook their own that seem reasonably priced if fried food is your thing. Their Snow Crabs are the best! Huge clusters. Tender sweet meat with Shells that crack beautifully. They do not have that fishy taste you find so many other places. I got the 2pcs fried whitting fish with French fries for $5.99. It was piping hot, they cook it right there in front of you. The pieces of fish are huge. The breading is good. It reminds me of the type of breading on fried shrimp I've gotten from other places. I seasoned mine heavily with some Old Bay, which made a difference. The fish tasted fresh and was moist after frying. The fries were basic crinkle cut fries FYI. The lost a star only because if I didn't season it heavily after it might have been kinda bland but that's personal preference. Definitely coming back for more. Bought 2 large lake trout dinners. It came with 2 huge pieces of trout, fries and bread. And it was HUGE and fresh tasting. Wish it was a bit more seasoned, but it was still good. This place has a large variety of seafood, various fish, crab, frog legs etc. It's a takeout joint but also a fish market so you can buy cooked and raw items. Parking lot is a little cramped for my liking so I ended up parking next door in the Goodwill lot...which I'd only recommend trying on a weekend to avoid Goodwill taking issue with it. The prices are reasonable and the workers are friendly. Not the best location in town, and they have a small parking lot that can get crowded quickly. Have been here numerous times but yesterday was the last. On yelp closing time for this location was listed at 8p. I get there at 5:50 the owner says they close at 6 and yells at me "I'm not tryin to stay here after 6" when I mentioned that it lists his closing time as 8p on this app he then snaps "that's not my fault!" I had a crab leg craving. After purchasing crab legs from a chain grocery store the week prior I knew I had to go to a seafood market. I called to make sure they had snow crab legs prior to the drive, they did. Prices were of market value so it was time to ride! I arrived. It was the attendant who helped me, another lady in the back, and a gentleman. I think he is who answered the phone and he was the only person who could take my money, must be the owner. The lady greeted me and took me right to the crab legs, they were a great size, at least the shell was. They were frozen, that does add to the price you pay because their measuring the crab legs, plus the frozen water on the crab legs. She offered to steam them, after securing the price but I declined. Fast forward to getting home. I cooked them, set down ready to dig in, I opened the crab leg and to my HUGE DISAPPOINMENT there was 1/4 of THIGH MEAT!!! When eating crab legs, you open the thigh shell, pull out the thigh meat, hold it up at the table and compare it to what whomever at the table was able to pull out. We were both looking crazy because there was nothing to compare. I paid $47 for three clusters of frozen water, shells, and a few meaty claws. Highly disappointed and unsure if I should give the establishment another chance. read more
