Even tho they didn't sell what I was looking for the guy answering the phone was very pleasant and helpful.

PG&E notified us of a power outage scheduled for Oct 30th lasting about 6 hours plus or minus, so I pulled out our generator to make sure it was operational. We have to have power because of medical equipment required to run continuously. The generator would not start despite replacing the spark plug, checking the oil, and cleaning the carburetor. It just turned over and over and then backfired. I called around small engine repair shops, but all were backed up with existing equipment that needed repairs. I called Stroup's by recommendation from Dave's small engine repair in Weaverville, Ca. I was told they were backed up as well, but after explaining the nature of my problem, the gentleman I spoke to said he would call the repair shop to see if they could get me in. I was called back and told to bring in the generator and speak to Mark. He explained that it might not be repaired if it needs parts, but would try to repair it right away. It turned out to be a stuck valve, bad gas and gummed up carburetor. Mark called me back a couple of hours later and said he got it running. I brought in my Poulan chainsaw today, because, after trying to put the new chain on myself, i hadn't done it quite right.... (even though i watched an instructional you-tube video.. ) Turns out that i didn't have the right length chain, so Terry took it apart, shortened the chain, and fixed it for me right there at the counter. I brought my lawn mower to this place and asked them to replace the pull cord. Even though the mower ran just fine (besides a broken pull cable) They cleverly unsold me a very expensive tune up and said that it should be done in a week. Two weeks later I learned that they tore into the engine of my mower and discovered that a $250 part needed to be replaced. Since the mower was valued at $100 they suggested that I purchase a new mower from them. I declined and they scooped the engine parts into a cardboard box and charged me $20 for the trouble. For new equipment I'm willing to make the drive to Anderson. Sometimes though, it's almost 5pm and Stroup's location is right there. They sure don't know how to make a customer feel welcomed, it's kinda weird, always seems like I'm bothering them to ask a question or get a part or turn in a chain for sharpening. My husband went in and ordered a part for his chain saw. He was told it will be in in 3 days. went in on the 3rd day. The part is NOT there! He was told it will be there in 3 days, again. Went back on that day, no part. Was told the part had not even been ordered! In total it took over 9 days to get the part. Do to people not doing there job. read more

So I took my chainsaw in brand is a Polan. The gentleman who helped me told me how they don't work on Polens. And that I'm better off spending the money and buying a brand-new $600 Husquavarna. I told him I rarely need a chainsaw so I prefer to get my blade sharpened and a tuneup. He said yes we can do that took my saw and said he would call me back when it is ready. I never heard anything after a week so I decided to stop in to see if my chainsaw was ready, after getting in there they asked if I ever received a phone call I stated no I have not. I've purchased a number of items there in the past month including a expensive walk behind trimmer. After using it for twenty minutes or so I realized it wouldn't do the job on my property. I called them on the phone and they said bring it back for a full refund. My second issue was just two days ago when I purchased a pro Stihl pole saw based upon their recommendation. When I got it home, a HT 131 I discovered that Stihl had apparently discontinued this model two years ago. After speaking to the owner I found out that the replacement model, the HT 133 had so many problems Stihl had brought back a improved version of the HT 131. The pros all loved the 131 and so I'm now happy with my purchase. I were wrong and they were right. Top marks for Stroup's read more

I recently had a saw fail on me and had 4 long chains left over. They wouldn't fit the new saw i bought at Stroups. I brought the chains and the saw in at the suggestion of Gene on the phone. I thought maybe i could buy a new bar so i could use the chains. After weighing the cost of replacement chains vs a new bar I decided to go ahead and spend $50 on a new bar. Until.....Gene says, "Let's back up here. Did you save your old bar? If so, you can use that bar on this saw!" In fact, I tossed the saw but remembered I had saved the bar. I've had to bring our lawn mower in twice. The first time took 2-3 months since they kept "misplacing" it. Whenever I called to check up on the progress (since it was taking a ridiculous amount of time) they couldn't find our info on file or our mower. This happened more than once. At one point they offered to give us a different used mower. I didn't want someone else's mower- I wanted mine! They were supposed to give it a blade sharpening, full tune-up, and see if it had any other problems. When we finally got it back after $200 it worked for a while and then started spewing black smoke and would die. Soon it stopped working all together. And this is after they replaced the transmission. The drive train also didn't work making it hard to push. We brought it back in and asked them to please try to have it ready in a week's time because it was going to a relative in the Bay Area and that is when I'd be driving down there. 3 weeks later, after no word from Stroup's I called. Turns out they had my contact info in there wrong even though I checked to make sure the guy had written it correctly. 4 months later and another $39 we're done with Stroup's never to return again. I would definitely recommend not risking it with them. read more

I then went around the back to see if one of the guys in the back could help but they also were ignorant and rude. It took less than a couple seconds to fix it. They do not stand behind the equipment that they sell. I purchased a Huskavarna chain saw and it had to have the piston in the motor replaced. After two uses, the same problem exists and once again I am at Stroup's mercy to bring it back. This is an on-going problem with Huskavarna as many friends have had the same problem and the construction industry thinks that Stroup's and Huskavarna are covering up the problems and not addressing them. After the snow pounded the trees in Redding, I needed some parts for my Husqvarna 51 saw to go to work on clearing up downed trees. The line of customers was almost out the door. After a 10 minute wait and conversation with the customers in line, the crew was efficiently taking care of the many needs of us waiting in line. The young man that waited on me said my air filter could be cleaned and reused, and did just that for me. I appreciate the advise and service. Bought a new filter anyway. read more

I'll make this short as possible. I brought a Stihl 311 in and explained that it would not start on wet days but that it would on dry ones. (the day Stroups worked on it, 11/12/19 was a dry day, so it started fine) They fired it up and ran it for ten minutes, found no problems so they tore it down to look for performance issues, (Not the problem). They pressurized the case and found small leaks, so they called me and said it would be $265 to reseal the case. Mind you, I never had a performance issue, It had a cold, wet day issue and there had been a total of 5 tanks of fuel run through it. I asked how much an ignition module cost and was told that the air leak was the problem. I've been wrenching for a living since 86 and told him so. His response was " then you know exactly what an air leak will do to your compression". Wrong, the answer to that is nothing! They were obviously trying to steal from me because I knew the leak in the crankcase would only cause a run-ability issue not what they were trying to tell me it would. I went and got it back in a box and they charged me $37.50 for a mistaken diagnosis. While there, after I called them out, they tossed out insults, calling me "childish", but then tried to walk it back when they couldn't snow me. I still don't know how much a module costs. I just brought it in because I didn't have time, at my wife's request. Now I'm "childish", I'm out $37.50, and now have to make time to put the lemon basket case back together. To think I bought $1500 worth of new saw from them the week before. OOPS! read more

Bought a new Stihl ms171 there. Took it home and set it on the work bench. Next morning, bar oil had leaked all over my (wood) work bench. Took the saw back and was told by the owner," thats normal. get used to it." He then walked away. This is not my first saw and i've never seen a brand new one that leaks all the bar oil out overnight. Also had a bad experience years ago when i bought a new stihl 044 ($600.+) there. They said it was not possible to rebuild a string trimmer head on a wheeled string trimmer. Never mind I already did that for $15 at a local bearing shop - They wanted $150 just for the parts. The only place in town you can go for high quality power equipment. Have been there many times for tune-up and repair of my chainsaws and weed trimmers. Sales people treated me with courtesy and were prompt in explaining what would be involved in the repair or how to repair equipment myself. Once during a busy season for weed clearing they put a rush on my repair and I was back whacking weeds in a minimum amount of time. Very much appreciated! read more

They are dicks to women, sorry but that describes most of them perfectly and J is the worst they do have good products thats the only reason I go back.. although today I am going to al's to make a 400.00 purchase cause I dont feel like dealing with them and its worth distance to the other shop, Yes I have taken equipment in to be fixed.. it DOES take forever, they dont give you an written estimate or any thing to fall back on and several times the estimate price has changed from the verbal estimate they gave at first.. I went in there last week to get my Husqvarna trimmer repaired. The guy looked at it and said that it wasn't really a Husqvarna and wasn't even worth looking at, you should just get a new one. I told him it said Husqvarna right on the trimmer and he said that it was made by a third party and they wouldn't service it. I've never been treated that rudely in my entire life. I will never go back there ever again and I will never buy a Husqvarna brand again as long as I live. Rudest customer service ever! read more

I just purchased a heavy duty chipper/shredder from Stroup's. The customer service I received from Jason was excellent. I had come with several chippers in mind after careful research. Jason went through the models with me and helped me purchase the one that would best meet my homeowner needs. Today he delivered the chipper, all assembled and charged, ready to go. He gave us a tutorial at my home and some tips for proper use. Overall, I very much appreciated Jason's patience, level of understanding of the equipment, time spent with me making the decision, personal delivery and set up, and just the fact that he was a really nice, personable and professional person to deal with. I see by the most recent reviews not much has changed at stroups. I bought work pants there 15 years ago and tried to return them because they were too small. They refused to give my wife a refund while being rude and verbally abusive to her. I went there to try and "talk it out" and ended up with no refund and almost a fight. Needless to say, I have never been back there since. I have worked in the logging/ vegetation management field for 20 years and when asked by friends, family or customers about saw shops to go to, I always steer them clear of stroup's. read more
