I honestly wouldn't recognize Norwegian cuisine if it was presented to me on a boiled goat carcass,…read morealthough I don't think they actually eat boiled goat. See how little I know? However, it was not until Jamie W. and I made it to the charming hamlet of Flåm deep into our Norway excursion that we went to an actual Norwegian restaurant for the first time. Unless you count the reindeer sausage in Bergen. Oh well, this was more a cafe with a large, two-level outdoor terrace on a hilltop just a quick jaunt from our hotel. I just noticed it on Google Maps and so apparently did a lot of the people who checked into the hotel at the same time. The menu was small with just six choices for meals plus desserts and snacks. I decided to try the Sognalapskaus. I believe it translates into a regional stew as we were in the Sogna area, but the real head turner was the 210 NOK price which was $21.60 in US dollars. It was a pretty satisfying homestyle lamb stew ladled right out of the stock pot (photo: https://bit.ly/3QeJrOZ). It came with a plate of Norwegian flatbread that was truly flat and somewhat tasteless on its own (photo: https://bit.ly/3da1bfK). Jamie went with the decidedly non-Nordic Chli Con Carne. Same price, heavy on the beans but with actual tortilla chips and sour cream (photo: https://bit.ly/3Q2rGCc). He didn't like it as much as my stew, so we ended up sharing both plates. I didn't think his was so bad. Things picked up considerably with the desserts though. Yes, we had desserts. We were on vacation after all. The 75 NOK ($7.72) Cheesecake was quite nice in a custardy way with a vanilla cookie crust and plenty of whipped cream (photo: https://bit.ly/3d4GhhX). The 85 NOK ($8.75) Carrot Muffin was huge with quite a thick layer of cream cheese frosting sprinkled with fresh lingonberries (photo: https://bit.ly/3JruwOI). It's funny to read one Yelp review stating it was the best meal he had and another stating it was the worst. I think it was definitely good food though pricey like most everything in Norway. Manage your expectations accordingly. FOOD - 4 stars...actual Norwegian cuisine (except for that chili) but hearty nonetheless AMBIANCE - 4 stars...pastoral setting worked well with the native food SERVICE - 3.5 stars...pretty reasonable though a bit clipped TOTAL - 4 stars...just so you can check Norwegian food off your list RELATED - Exploring Norway? Having said that we were starving from a day exploring the fjords and a little buzzed from the hotel drinks. My husband and I split the deer burger and lamb dish. Leaving one star out bc the burger sauce was kinda gross and we just used mayo and mustard instead...and the prices were ridiculous (which is not unusual for Norway but whatev).
