Jamie W. and I had a long wait for the 2:10PM departure on the uber-popular Flam Railway (review: https://bit.ly/3wVaSW2). We took the half-hour mini-bus ride to the Stegastein Viewpoint platform earlier in the morning (review: https://bit.ly/3dxIwe1), but then what.. Lunch, of course. We had seen a woman eat an appetizing salad here on the terrace the day before, so we made a mental note since we had a hankering for greens. We both ordered the 135 NOK ($13.50 US) Salad with Feta Cheese which featured sun-dried tomatoes, yellow peppers, sliced fennel and cucumber, hard-boiled egg, and croutons. All of it drizzled by a pesto herb oil (photo: https://bit.ly/3CXhDul). Pretty delicious considering it was a snack bar next to the visitors center. OK, now what... oh, look at that gelato selection, very impressive (photo: https://bit.ly/3qbkGHP). Alas, we both went for our primary weakness, the Softis (soft-serve in a cone), and a so-called medium was 50 NOK ($5 US)) (photo: https://bit.ly/3TFIwJf). Decadently creamy with a complete coating of chopped nuts and such a bargain by Norwegian tourist bait standards. Geez, we better stop finding more stuff to eat during our wait time. Is it time for our train yet? FOOD - 4 stars...both the salad and the softis hit the spot in different ways AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...really just a casual snack bar in a bigger building SERVICE - 3.5 stars...dutifully executed TOTAL - 4 stars...a good bite or three on your way in or out of Flam RELATED - Exploring Norway? Flam...an artificial town engineered for transportation and tourists...unless your hotel came with breakfast, this is your only place to eat before noon. Its just a self serve cafeteria....you may just want to get a yogurt or pastry at the Coop grocery store instead. My 65kr/$8.67 shrimp sandwich...gross! Lots of tasteless shrimp on top of a big scoop of mayonaise. But the wife's 63kr/8.40 salmon sandwich was great. 25kr/$3.33 for yogurt...or you can get it for 15kr/$2 at the grocery store. 25kr/$3.50 for a small cup of coffee...boo! But thats typical Norway. I'd normally give this 3 star, but since its your only breakfast option in Flam, I'll give it a 4. (Note: At time of this review, the US dollar was up 50% against the Norway kroner...$1 = 7.5kr vs $1 = 5kr just a couple years ago)

Great location right on the fjord & next to the ferry. These cheeses are yummy. The brown cheese cheesecake was uniquely delicious. Portions are more than enough. Good service.

"A neighboring clan went on the attack, And stole all the giant coco-yams from the barn out back."…read more Coco-Yam Song, Mountain Goats In a hamlet where the ratio of goats to people is 5:1, you are more likely to find grazing grounds than habitats for human grazing. But no need to get bucky! You won't have to get down on all fours and forage for your fiber along the mountainsides, unless that's what floats your goat. Instead, herd yourself to the Underdal Fjordkafe to chew the cud and ruminate over your travel plans while waiting for the return ferry to Flam. The café has the most unbelievable views one could dream up from the seating area on the deck as it faces the fjords, mountains, and falls. You won't likely see any goats sitting at the tables around you, but you never know...you just might meet a Billy! One of the café's specialties is reindeer meatballs (apologies to Dasher and Dancer), but we could only salivate over others' plates as the cafe had just closed for dinner by the time we arrived. Baaaaad timing on our parts, but luckily their ice cream stand was still open, along with refreshments for sale. With mini ice cream cups in hand and grumbling stomachs, we hungrily asked those at the neighboring table if their meatballs tasted good. They answered, "Totes ma goats!" There is a bathroom way in the back through the attached Eldhuset Museum...we were told we would be on the right trail when we passed the giant goat poster. This goat must have the right stuff that separates the sheep from the goats to be picked out of 500 as the poster boy! Right next to the café is the Underdal Brygge, where you alert the ferry to stop by turning on a flashing yellow light. Don't wait until the last pickup time if you can help it, because the ferry never came for the last call. Luckily the café has wifi, albeit quite spotty, so that we could get a hold of a taxi service to take us back to Flam. 4 hooves in the air for the view alone (5 if I had a fifth), a "meh-eh-eh" for the ice cream, and one head ram for our late arrival. "I ain't got no mouthful, I ain't got no tail." Night Goat, Melvins
