I was a little hesitant to sign…read moreup due to the cost, but thankfully there was a free week being offered so I could get a sample of the classes. From the moment I stepped into the studio, I felt very welcome. The instructors/front desk staff are warm and friendly, and took the time to learn (and remember) my name. The class instruction is wonderful with every instructor (I think I have had 7 different ones!) energetic and enthusiastic. There has not been a single class I didn't like. The music is great. The workout is fantastic as well, and in one week I have already noticed a difference in the way my clothes fit (as well as a reduction in my body fat % for an objective measure). I signed up for a month before my free week was over, and I can see myself coming here for a long time!

A MUST try!! Rebecca, owner and instructor of Pure Barre Baton Rouge, is not only kind, but…read moreextremely knowledgeable and attentive to the needs of her clients/visitors. I attended my first class at any Pure Barre today and am so happy it was here. Even though I was fairly out of my element (new to this form of exercise and unsure of the format of the class compared to others), Rebecca went out of her way to make me feel welcomed and comfortable. The class was a mix of veteran and rookie barre attendees (though to me it seemed like everybody had a good idea of what they were doing) - which helped since I could look to others to ensure I was pulsing, extending, and locking at all the right times in all the right places. Throughout the class Rebecca made sure everybody was on track and during the moments anybody fell off course, she would quietly provide direction and guidance. She would do so while keeping everybody else going. The music was perfect, the building itself was clean and organized, and the workout itself was just what everybody needed. Based on what the other ladies were saying, the other instructors also lead fun and rewarding classes. I will most definitely be going to this Pure Barre when I am back in town!! Don't wait! Try it out.

They also offer nutrition coaching and body composition analyses. Having my body composition tested has been an empowering way to track my progress and keep motivated. At Iron Tribe, you're in and out in 45 minutes. I really appreciate their workouts that are designed to get me moving and working in an efficient way. There are no mirrors in the gym, so instead of looking at your form in the mirror, you'll need to listen to your body. In every class, you will learn standards of movement for the workout, and coaches will work with you to make sure your body is in safe alignment. I imagine that this greatly reduces injuries. There are well-stocked locker rooms with showers. Also inside the gym, they sell supplements and different kinds of energy drinks. They don't push them on you, but they're there if you need them/are curious. I look forward to my workouts. I've found that I'm no longer thinking about working out as torture or punishment. The coaches use language meant to empower you, rather than critique you. This was helpful for me as I was learning to use the equipment. It's also really fun, and everyone is nice. I was pleasantly surprised by what an encouraging and non-judgmental space it was. A membership is not cheap, but you're paying for more than a gym membership. It's more like a gym membership, personal training, nutrition coaching, and body composition testing. I'd recommend Iron Tribe to anyone.

I preferred the co-ed spaces because it had the better equipment for the most part (as least where free weights were concerned). I liked that this place was very close to my home and I liked the sauna. The workout space that was usually for classes but they let us do exercises in there when classes weren't in session..perfect for people who are doing no-equipment workouts. It also has these big mirrors. Now, here's the thing...I think this facility needs some upgrades. The equipment is old and several machines were broken or taped up. There's also this lingering smell in the facility that smells like chemicals but also something else that triggered my nausea a few times. I never felt like the place was clean. The floor in the main area was lumpy and uneven. The carpet in the "women only" area was stained and looked dirty. I was not comfortable working out in the floor even with my mat. And the women's only area had a sad collection of weights, as if women don't care about free weights and only want to use machines? Anyway, I personally wouldn't recommend this gym, but maybe I was just too pampered by the LSU gym during my tenure there.

Unfortunately the truck broke down in Baton Rouge, Louisiana after driving for 12 hours. I then had to wait 4 hours for a tow truck. After making it to a auto shop I ubered to get some food and then walked to my normal happy place. THE GYM...as I waited to catch my last minute flight that I booked to go back home to Savannah. I came across this gym and decided to check it out. I paid $11 for a day pass to use the entire facility. I wanted to shower and see if it woke me up enough to want to train and relieve some much needed stress. Unfortunately, I was too tired to train so I decided to look around at their apparel, snacks and supplements. As I'm looking I see the manager (old blonde lady) and the young girl Jenna talking about me and giving me looks...I guess because I was rolling around a small carry on bag with my RedCon1 backpack. I then approached them and asked about the smoothie bar that they have with seating available. I paid about $15 more for a large smoothie and a couple of snacks while I waited another 30 mins to head to the airport and get checked in early. After I drank the smoothie at the bar I went to the bathroom to wash my hands and leave. Before I began to leave, I was trying to figure out the specific address to type in the Uber app to be picked up from there, so I proceeded to ask the manager...she was very short and rude with her responses and failed to make eye contact, until I sat down at the bench in front of the sign in desk where the manager immediately said "um no, no...you can't just hang out here, you need to leave." I replied "I'm sorry?...(immediately showed her my phone) I'm booking an Uber right now to leave?" The manager said "if you're not training you can't just hang out here, you need to leave, there is a bench outside." I said "well I paid for a day pass?" The manager replied "yeah no...there is a bench outside, you can't be in here." I said (in shock at how rude she was) umm okay... and walked outside. I was completely dumb founded. It's not like I'm some homeless looking guy walking around in normal clothes...I was wearing gym clothes, and had a gym bag...and was purchasing things and paid for a DAY PASS to be able to use and experience the facility. I strongly do not recommend coming to this location and do not wish to visit or sign up at any of their other locations due to this experience. If you plan to uphold a strong reputation as a business I suggest choosing wisely of the people you wish to represent and manage the business.

The only downside is that I haven't been able to book any classes because I was told there is no instructor at this time. The parking lot may seem crowded at times but I've always been able to use whatever equipment I needed and find a space to workout. My daughter joined the free teen summer program and is really enjoying it. I signed up for the Black card and am satisfied with the price and amenities.

Since then another fitness club (Crunch) opened up in the Hammond Aire shopping center, and I needed to rejoin a gym to get my health back in order. Visited both gyms, pricing for both basic and extended services very similar. The new Planet Fitness location was spotlessly clean (especially the bathroom and shower area) & the equipment looked fairly new. I was familiar with most of the machines, but was pleased to see that the massage chairs had been upgraded and now not only massages your back and legs but ALSO your shoulders and lower arms/hands...very nice. They also added a 'Relax Pod' machine which personally I enjoy at the end of each visit. You lay down, similar to the hydro massage bed at a slight incline. There's a huge screen in front of you where you select choice of visual stimuli. I usually choose an aerial (drone?) tour of exotic places like the Scotland Highlands or tropical islands. The pod plays relaxing music during the video, you can heat the platform as well as adding scent to the air. I find it very relaxing. As for Crunch Fitness, I found their facility interesting in that they had a room where they schedule group exercise classes (mostly very early in the morning and in the evening when people are getting off of work), have a dedicated Spin room, and have a dry sauna in the ladies restroom. I LOVE a sauna, but my fitness level right now would not really benefit from group classes since I would not be able to participate fully at the moment. This gym might be one I would switch to at a later date as my physical fitness improves...time will tell. I found that the Crunch Fitness gym was NOT as clean as Planet Fitness and much more crowded with a LOT more young people. I was visiting both on a weekday before people were off of work. So comparing the crowds and attendance seemed very strikingly different. Although there was no spin or group exercise class on-going at Crunch Fitness when I was there, there were a lot of young people working out throughout the gym. Planet Fitness was a more relaxed atmosphere, in part because their attendance on that day when I first visited was on the light side. Both facilities had tanning booths if you're into that, I am not. Planet Fitness however also had the red light machine which I've not tried since rejoining but used previously and enjoyed. I don't believe Crunch Fitness had massage chairs which I also like to utilize at the end of every visit. Overall for my needs at the moment Planet Fitness was a better fit, but I have to say the dry sauna and group classes did lead me to at least consider Crunch Fitness. It's all a matter of what you're looking for I suppose. So far, my visits to Planet Fitness have been very pleasant with the staff being accommodating my needs. Just wish they would do something with the parking lot. Lots of holes and needs repair or new blacktop.

Check in was easy, there are cute, safe cubbies for you to put your belongings in. The owner of this location, Nicole, explained what we were going to do, what we needed, and how to get started. The pace of the class was great - enough time to warm up and breathe, open our lungs, get our blood moving. From there, there was a lot of pulsing, balancing, movement... she made sure to assure us the burn we felt was good for us. She also encouraged us to modify if we needed to. I have old wrist problems, and made sure to point out we should not push anything. She also came over and made sure we were pushing ourselves to a healthy burn point. The next couple of days, well, I loved the pain. I will be signing up for more classes for sure so that the burn lessens one day and I can really tell more a difference. Bring water with you. I forgot mine and really could have used some. They have little towels, but if you want a dry fit type of towel, that may work better. Wear socks. Breathe deep. Enjoy the challenge.
