I didn't have much hope that this would be a "real workout" after reading about EMS training online…read moreI thought it was too good to be true. I was sore for 2 days straight after this!! When you walk in, you are given some long shorts and a shirt in your size to change into in one of the three dressing rooms. You can then leave your belongings in one of the lockers and start your workout. Your instructor will wet a suit and then help you put it on and get all hooked up to the machine. This suit is a $5 one time rental or you can rent more permanently I believe. Afterwards, you will workout for 15-20 minutes doing some movements guided by your instructor, who also adjusts the intensity of the pulses the machine emits. They let me know this equals about 4 hours in the gym. The workout does get quite intense as most people are not familiar with the machine's pulsing sensations, but tensing your muscles does help! Afterwards, they encourage you to rest, stretch and drink water. There are showers available here as well. As I only went for the trial session and am not too familiar with this kind of fitness, I can't speak on the total efficacy of consistent sessions, but I will say the soreness I felt was real, and I imagine that this would probably be beneficial to some looking to diversify their training, especially those that might not have a full hour to devote to a workout that day. They're on ClassPass as well and super easy to book!

My contract was for 6 months, but I was charged for 7 months of sessions, and the amounts billed were not accurate. For example, the contract stated $225, but I was charged $287.38. I was also told I had 6 sessions left, but when I arrived I was informed I needed to pay for another month. This is unacceptable and unprofessional. Please correct your billing records. Also, the vests were always unclean and smelled bad. Several people I recommended this workout to also stopped going because they all had bad experiences.

I now have…read moreto rethink my review of Dan in light of not only the bad experiences (which seem to have surfaced this year - which was a bit of a shock for me - after having trained with Dan for over a year prior). Indeed, I'll need to revise my 1-star rating to somewhere in between. For now, I'll select 3 stars. I just have to do some thinking. I suppose I will never know what was going on in Dan's life to witness a turnaround from a decent trainer to being viewed as unreliable. But then I have to believe that perhaps Dan is overcoming whatever struggles he was going through, and he can hopefully refocus his life on his chosen profession - personal training. I will provide a balanced update shortly. I would say that in spite of the difficulties that I had with Dan this year, since I started training with him in late 2016 through the beginning of 2018, I had gone from being out-of-shape at about 185 pounds and lost a great deal of weight through not only weight training, cardio, and a focus on core exercises, but also a completely revised diet that was initially difficult to undertake, but which became easier once it became routine (going to a low glycemic diet - Ezekiel Bread being the only starch I ate - and eliminating almost all dairy products such as cheese, milk, cream cheese, butter, ice cream, pizza - and also replacing juice with almond milk). Once I dropped below the 150-pound mark, I once again weighed almost what I did in college, and I dropped from a 34" waist to 30". I replaced almost all my clothing - shirts, pants, shorts, swimsuits, belts, t-shirts - everything except shoes and socks. I now work out with another trainer, but having started with a much thinner physique and very low body fat made it much easier to gain muscle mass. I've since regained about 10 pounds, but as muscle, rather than fat. Initially running on the treadmill for 5-10 minutes was difficult. And now I run 60 minutes without any problems. I have to stress that while much of the weight loss / increased endurance /gain in strength was a combination of my own efforts and that of Dan and my current trainer. Yet, the spark that ignited me was the initial encouragement that Dan provided that it was possible for me - indeed for probably anybody determined enough - to make great changes in their physique (which can also bring about an increase in self-esteem and self-confidence). Dan's coming through with the balance of the debt gives me a renewed faith in his turnaround to once again being a decent personal trainer. It also gives me renewed faith in people - that a person can be doing quite well and excel at something they are dedicated to but then experience some kind of unknown issues which causes a disheartening drop in what was once a determined focus. Yet, just as I was once in shape and became out-of-shape and then back in even better shape than ever, Dan (and other people) can also begin a renewed and even greater focus on their career and perhaps become even more dedicated and even better than before.

As a full time dentist, my body takes a real beating, especially my lower back, so finding the right physical therapist was extremely important to me. I came in dealing with ongoing back pain and was starting to think more seriously about whether surgery might eventually be necessary. Since working with Conner, that trajectory has shifted in a very meaningful way. I'm not claiming magic, but so far I've been able to avoid surgery, and that is a huge win. What I really appreciate is that this is not the typical fluffy PT experience with endless generic stretches and exercises that don't feel connected to real strength or function. Conner takes a much more thoughtful approach. We do careful progressive overload with real attention to form, limitations, and precautions for my back. So I'm not just getting physical therapy. I'm also able to keep up with my training and strength work at the same time. That combination has been incredibly valuable for me. Conner is also just a pleasure to work with. He is easy to talk to, a great conversationalist, and he makes the sessions feel fun, challenging, and encouraging without ever losing sight of safety. He knows how to push appropriately while still being careful. The new facility is another big plus. It feels modern, professional, and well set up for both rehab and training, which fits this style of treatment perfectly. It does not feel like a stale or overly clinical PT office. The early morning hours work really well for my schedule, and the location is very convenient and easy to access by the L train. Being so central in Manhattan makes it easy to get to. Overall, it feels like a win win. I'm addressing my back pain seriously while also continuing to build strength instead of putting my whole physical life on pause. When Covid came around, Ms West would not honor our karmic agreement for work and class exchange, citing that you can't just save up classes and that one should work at YU to improve their body. As an overweight woman, she was clearly body shaming me. Luckily, I won a dept of labor case against Ms West for the amount of about $1300 (which equated to how many classes I had store through work exchange) within the past few years. It does not compensate for the type of abuse Ms West extends to the world. It is upsetting that someone like this is within the yoga community but this is how the world works. She taught me so much.
