The bottom of the cooler looked like a beer can graveyard. The store shelves were also empty, and they didn't have much except for some bread and butter. The only thing that was well stocked was their scratch ticket section as well as cigarettes. Their other well stocked shelf was their hair extension section that was covered in dust. In the end this little sketchy store would have been better if the coolers were full and clean.

We loaded up with snacks and drinks for a roadtrip back to the city and everything was as you would expect. Not only were the cashiers super friendly but one guy working the coffee machines let me have my coffee for free because "the red light is on, the coffee is passed it prime" lol that still tickles me thinking back on it. There were a few regular tables along the perimeter among the high top tables but I chose to sit at the bar. The other patrons were very friendly and included me in their conversation. The beer was crisp and cold. The food came out rather quickly. The nachos were topped with beer cheese, fresh pico de gallo, sour cream, and scallions. There was a very generous amount of sour cream so I didn't have to worry about just eating chips. The bartender kept everyone served and knew what the regulars drank. She checked on me regularly. My only disappointment is that as summer comes to an end I will have to wait until next year to attend the events they have at the brewery.

Well, I returned to Utica and came back to Florentine Pastry Shop as promised. But you know what? All I had eyes for were their Pasticciotti. So I ordered two "pusties". One vanilla and one chocolate. They are magnificent. Simple and humble to be sure. But crisp and tender pastry stuffed with plenty of creamy, custardy, true-to-flavor filling. I can't stop thinking about them. And there is absolutely no reason to deprive a bakery of a full five stars based solely on their specialty item and noting else. The pusties are so good, I'm going to ignore the fact that I saw a full sheet of pre-filled cannoli in the case. Florentine Pastry Shop is a regional gem and a historical treasure. It's well worth the detour from the highway should you find yourself driving past Utica.
