Don't at all be surprised if you meet an engineer or someone in the health profession (nurses, dentists, doctors, etc.) - it is not a requirement that you are in these professions, it just appears that many people have drawn together here. There are many families, couples and single people doing life together and you do really feel the community here. The 5pm service runs at the same time as a young adults group called Fusion, running from about 4:30-6pm, including dinner, during the school term. There's also a creche for the smaller kids that runs during the 5pm service. After this service, supper is had together in another part of the church so you can come have a hot beverage to warm you, nibbles to survive you till you have dinner and mingle with some truly genuinely lovely people. So, whether you want to come and meet Jesus, meet new people, meet a friend, or maybe you just want to ask a question or few, you will be more than welcomed.

Anyhow, this is your typical Catholic Cathedral, which means that stations of the cross are presented around the walls, and there are also confessionals for you to let the priest know your horrible, dirty, and rather dark secrets (if you so desire). The church is rather nice though, and the thing that usually attracts me to the place really happens to be the art - I think religious art is cool, especially if done in the more traditional style, and the art in this cathedral is no different.

St Francis Xavier, in my opinion is one of our prettiest and most idyllic churches. Whether or not you're of the Catholic faith, a trip inside the Cathedral is quite an ethereal experience. You can't help but admire the architecture of the beautiful interior and no matter your faith (or lack of) it provides a place for private reverie that is matched by few others. Not only is there an actual quiet inside, there is an amazing mood of hushed calm. Despite my feeling of calm and quiet, the 'owners' themselves describe it as a busy place as it is after all a parish church and it is true because there's always an abundance of people inside - they're just really people in quiet reflection. Construction on the Cathedral began in 1851 and it has undergone a variety of changes and additions over the years. The installation of the tower didn't happen until quite recently in 1996. Interestingly the Cathedral wasn't considered 'finished' until the tower was completed which meant the ceremonial dedication didn't happen until almost a century and half after construction had begun. The church is open from 7.30 in the morning until 6.30 at night, 7 days a week and everyone is welcome to visit. There are several Mass services daily as well as Rosary and Confessions and the Church is available for weddings, baptisms and funerals. Alternatively if you don't want to be involved in any of the formal services, you can take a self guided tour at your leisure using one of the brochures available in the vestibule. Photographs are allowed - I would however take care using a flash if people are in the midst of prayer - and they do ask that you turn off your mobile phone.

With a great team of pastors onboard, they truly act as role models and parents to the numerous international students here. It's a great, fun and family oriented church and one that I am fortunate to be part of sinced we made Adelaide our home. The best part post church service: we all head out for a huge Asian feast. Quick pointers: Sunday School, baby feeding room, cafe with drinks and warm rolls etc, mini indoor playground, toilets with disability facilities and accessible via bus or tram( walking distance from King William Road)

If you are staying at the Hilton Adelaide or orient yourself with Victoria Square/Central Market area, the church is about a 6 minute, 6 block walk down Grote. While the Catholic Cathedral in Adelaide is under renovation -- masses are being held in St. Patrick. St. Francis Xavier is a grand church. But St. Patrick's is small and beautiful. In the July 2015 time period, masses were held at a variety of times -- including Sat. night vigil mass and an early "no music" mass at 7am (very well done). If you attend mass, the readings etc. are on a nicely done white sheet which you pick up on the way into mass. Church was built in 1912-1914 period. Stations of the cross date to 1914. Stained glass windows are beautiful. Ordinarily hosts Croatian and other specialized language masses. I was glad that I got to attend mass here.

Flinders Street Baptist Church in the city is not only a beautiful building but it seems to be a…read morechurch with a difference. Building began on this church back in 1861 and was completed 2 years later when it opened for worship. This particular church is a popular location for weddings in Adelaide. What I like about their approach is that they will allow you to either have the resident minister conduct your ceremony or you can organise for a minister of your choice to do the honours. This is a stunning heritage listed church and would make a great location for any wedding. I do remember though when my brother was married there many years ago, it was at the end of a week long traditional Adelaide heat wave and the church itself was Hot! Mind you at that point everywhere you turned was hot. Every Tuesday at 1 in the afternoon there is a musical event at Flinders Street called 'Tuesday on Flinders'. Anyone is welcome to drop in and enjoy. Nice touch. Additionally there are rooms available within the church ground that are available to the public to hire for private events and / or meetings. While the church itself is only open for a couple of hours on Tuesdays and Wednesday - and of course Sunday mornings for services - the office is open 9am-3.30pm, Monday, 9am-5pm Tue, Wed, Thurs and 9am-1.00pm Friday.

Christopher Hitchens is my atheist of choice), but I'm a hopeful agnostic: one who is skeptical, and thinks generally that we'll never know about the mysteries of the cosmos, but one who always hopes he might. The church was locked tight, with some very flashy doors barring the way to peace and enlightenment. (I found out post-review writing that you have to enter the back way for some good old-fashioned pew-sitting.) However, there was a sign directing me to help myself to a sit down on a 'sofa of hay'. I found a tucked away sofa, assembled from hay, and decided to take a seat. To my surprise and exclamation, it was quite comfortable. This is the sort of absurd quaintness that I love to discover. It's the sort of thing we forget about in our age of technology, and it was a remarkable find I shall endeavour to visit again the moment I can. If you're ever on Flinders Street, gentle readers, seek it out.

They have also got a very welcoming attitude. The sanctuary at Scots is open for quiet contemplation Tuesday to Thursday from 10am - 2pm, and you are not expected to pay or be part of the regular church goers, and this is a fine thing if you need somewhere in the city to sit quietly with your thoughts for a while. There are a range of things you can access through Scots, so go to the office on the church site, which is only open Tuesdays to Thursdays as listed here; but the actual church is open more often than the office.

It has been ages since I've actually been into the church, despite actually living in Adelaide…read more Actually, I really do appreciate how some of these churches leave the doors open to allow people to wander in and walk around, and this church is certainly no exception (though there is some volunteer sitting there ready to help people out, and to answer any questions). I wouldn't necessarily say that it is impressive, not compared to some churches that I've visited, but for a cathedral in Australia, it still isn't all that bad.

They have regular Sunday services at 9am and 11am and then again in the evening at 7pm. I am not so much into the church for the worship - I love the building, and the history of the building. After all, Adelaide is the "City of Churches" and this one is 170 years old. It is quite large. The church is big enough, the church office is another thing entirely. It requires a Yelp of its own really.
