If you are staying at the Hilton Adelaide or orient yourself with Victoria Square/Central Market area, the church is about a 6 minute, 6 block walk down Grote. While the Catholic Cathedral in Adelaide is under renovation -- masses are being held in St. Patrick. St. Francis Xavier is a grand church. But St. Patrick's is small and beautiful. In the July 2015 time period, masses were held at a variety of times -- including Sat. night vigil mass and an early "no music" mass at 7am (very well done). If you attend mass, the readings etc. are on a nicely done white sheet which you pick up on the way into mass. Church was built in 1912-1914 period. Stations of the cross date to 1914. Stained glass windows are beautiful. Ordinarily hosts Croatian and other specialized language masses. I was glad that I got to attend mass here.

They don't worry about being hip, cool and trendy so they can compromise on the truth. They preach the gospel and sow seed amongst the rockiest ground and amongst the hardest hearts. It is an old heritage listed church because of it's age and historical significance in the area. There is a school attached at the rear which no longer acts as a school, but is also part of the original (now) heritage site. It is very popular for weddings, but it does have a real life as an actual church in the area as well. David McCall is the priest and they have a Sunday service each week with a sung Eucharist, which is rather special and enjoyable if you enjoy that sort of thing.

The recent extensions are definitely contentious. Though I'm normally against mixing modern and traditional, I actually think they've done a great job of the extensions here. You can't notice them until you're at the eastern end, when you see large glass doors leading into a modern space. I like that you get a very different impression depending upon the direction you approach from. Inside, the new segment is neat, modern and functional. No complaints there. However the part really worth seeing is the old interior, which has been beautifully done up and maintained over time. My favourite part, in a place full of beautiful architecture, is actually the kneelers. Each has been embroidered by a church group, and they're all different. I love this little touch, and how great they look up against the wood of the pews. As a functioning church, they have a contemporary "jam" service, which seeks to move with the times, as much as a church service can. It's not everyone's taste, but it's great to have the option of a non-traditional service in such beautiful surrounds.

Not happy Jan. St Peters Anglican Church at Glenelg is a beautiful church situated on Torrens…read moreSquare just past Coles supermarket in Nile Street. So why am I not happy? Well they've just put an extension on the Church and it's not good. I was devastated on a recent trip to the Bay to see the additions to the church on the Eastern end. They completely detract from the style of the original building. Apparently the extension is a new Community Centre and a long overdue needed upgraded to the church's facilities but the problem is it just doesn't work. This addition just doesn't fit with the original building. I don't understand why, when you have a stunning piece of architecture you would muck it up with what just looks like a stuck on afterthought. Ok, enough whinging. Extension aside St Peters Church is actually a stunning old church and one that is filled with character. If you've ever driven to Glenelg you've probably driven right past it at one time or another. The fact it is located on the centre of a roundabout sets it apart from its surroundings. The building itself is on the state National Trust register and if you're into classic gothic churches, you're sure to love this one. Go inside and you'll see an amazing pipe organ and an impeccably decorated interior. I love this old church but am disappointed with the new extension. While I'm sure the new facilities will be welcomed the Church appears to have lost some of its charm.

For those interested in a religious sense, the church itself is of Greek Orthodox faith and named after the Patron Saint of potters and miracles. Father John is the main priest in this scared premises and he does a good job of holding services in both Greek and English languages. This is also the church I am most likely to attend come a rare Sunday or during Easter, like many other Greeks. My brother got married here (to a non Greek if that helps anyone- Greek churches can be a little funny like that) and there was no need for his wife to become of Greek Orthodox faith etc. It was of hardly any fuss, and their daughter was later baptized here and tear free through the entire ceremony- rare for a Greek baby not to cry during the "dunking"! The church itself is gorgeous and true to common Greek church architecture. There are arched tops and chanting bells visible from the outside, and then the inside is home to many religious icons, two levels of wooden seating, huge chandeliers and candles galore. Additionally St. Spyridon has a small primary school and preschool attached to it. For those interested in the educational aspect, my sister takes her two boys to ST Spyridon play-group, which she thinks is fantastic. Her and her husband are now seriously contemplating sending their sons to the primary school when they turn five. She has looked into a few schools, and so far is most impressed by St Spyridon. My brother in law also was also awed by the fact that St Spyridon kids have an undefeated soccer team. Typical.

You may be on a path alone or with a few other people; a lonely path but a spiritually significant one. Why are people even on a spiritual path ever? What do the flowers say about it? Do you hear what the Flowers say? I'm not making a joke of the Spiritualist Church or the Spiritualist movement. I think everyone is entitled to explain the world to themselves in ways that make clarity out of the chaos. Reading a flower or having a flower reading may be your idea of a party trick, but it is nevertheless a fascinating experience and sometimes that's all you need for a fair donation, to feel picked up and made whole again. Ray is the Minister, they have a service on a Sunday morning from 10.30am where people are welcome to come along, but don't come to be a skeptic, you'd just be wasting their time and disrupting their very regular worship sessions. They sing a few hymns and someone leads, and then they do some flower readings. I must say I find the process quite a work of poetry, and not completely surreal or absurd. I can not stress enough that these are good people and they are hurting no one, so there's no good reason to come along and be disruptive. Respect.
