Upon returning home, she showed me her hair and almost her entire braid was pulled out. I called the daycare immediately at 6:15pm and spoke to the director who stated "I don't know what happened. No one told me anything. ." This is the fifth incident in a year where my child has been a victim of neglect where someone either didn't know what happened or even it when it was too late. Once she ingested fish which she is allergic to, the second someone bit her finger, the third someone pulled dirt all over her to the point that she looked gray when I picked her up. At no instance was medical attention sought and I was notified either a day later, that evening upon pick up or not at all. In one instance the assistant director told me she called with an incident but my voicemail immediately came one. Way prior to that time I told them I worked as a therapist and I had to devices to be reached at and they had both numbers at the time of this incident. When asked why she didn't try the other number, she denied having it. However, upon pick up that evening she provided me with the sheet I filled out at the time of my daughter's registration, which had both numbers, to confirm the numbers on file. At which time I stated, I thought you only had one number to which she apologized. One time I went to get my child from the playground and no one could find her! Today was my last straw. I'm a single mom and full time business owner and depend on daycare for childcare. Despite the neglect, numerous times they've closed early, opened late or closed her classroom completely with little to no notice. I believe the center is too overpopulated for the current staff which leads to neglect and lack of care. They are allowing a child with severe behavioral issues to run rampant on the 3 year old room with no action being done. The director basically told me that my child, who's black, can leave. But the little boy, who's white can stay with no repercussions. He has autism and behavioral issues and needs to be in an inclusion center but nothing is being done.

This school takes a more curriculum/teaching-oriented approach rather than simple "day care". They follow a pedagogical philosophy similar to Montessori, emphasizing freedom and harnessing each child's own specific interests and motivations. The biggest strength of YS is the outstanding teaching staff, all of whom care deeply about the well-being and growth of the children. The different teachers within the "cottage" of four adjoining classrooms developed individual connections with my son and the other children, knowing well their various interests and quirks. The pre-k cottage director, Ms. Jess oversees the classrooms with expertise and a deep sense of empathy. She effectively fields informal chats with parents about questions and concerns that pop up on the fly. Between the wonderful teachers and cottage director, I always felt that my child was in very safe and nurturing hands. The classroom atmosphere is warm and inviting. There is lots of natural light and many learning stations with carefully thought-out objects left for the children to "discover". Kids get zero screen time at the Young School. Instead of punishing children, behavior is managed through redirection and talking. Healthy snacks are offered, and the staff teaches and practices good hygiene. The main area that could be improved upon is communication from the director. On several occasions, I received mass emails chastising (unnamed) other parents for taking screenshots of the live video feed, requesting child-specific changes to naptime logistics, incorrectly using cubby space, and calling in to the classroom during non-naptime hours. ("Any parent disrupting the day too frequently will lose camera access and a parent meeting will be requested.") I would prefer these types of issues be resolved by one-on-one conversations with the relevant parents, rather than public shaming. The unprofessional tone of these emails was underscored by a lack of basic proofreading. My child's classroom had high turnover, with three different teachers in a six-month period. Shockingly, when one left and was replaced by a brand new employee, parents were not given any notice whatsoever. I showed up one morning to drop off my son in his classroom and encountered a total stranger who claimed to be in charge. Luckily, another teacher was in the cottage area and vouched for the new teacher's legitimacy. Lack of preemptive communication on this type of matter is unacceptable. Another instance of poor communication occurred when initially attempting to enroll my child. The paperwork was confusing and I had trouble getting questions answered, as other reviews have noted. Overall, I recommend the Young School as a safe, nurturing, and educational environment for child; parents may have to deal with some unneccesary hassles.

I've received no phone call from the owners to discuss the experience. parents beware!

I visited for an informational meeting about one of the many certificate programs offered by the UMBC. The buildings main "reception" area is circular in design and not very large. I arrived a few minutes after the officially start time of the event, so I did not experience any crowding. However, after peaking my head in one of the large rooms located on the main floor, I thought the size of the front reception area could easily become filled quickly with the amount of people I saw. After locating the classroom my meeting was being held in, I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of windows in the room which provided a lovely view of a garden and an abundance of natural light. The classroom decor was modern and the seating comfortable.

There is always someone to help you along the way. Starting a new venture is an adjustment. Students come from different backgrounds. We are mothers' father's single household, caretakers and in the workforce. The first year one learns how to juggle your time. Everyone has a different study time depending on the needs of the family. Some study while children are doing their homework, others may get up early or stay up late. You must fine your place to maintain your studies. Many days will be harder than others but always remember this is your education and for whatever reason, you are doing this know you are important and never give up.

The students that went were part of our newcomer program which means they have been in the country just over a year. While many speak Spanish and laughed at much of the dialogue, the students from other countries enjoyed this musical variation of the Wizard of Oz. I know I did! It was spring break for Goucher students, so the campus was quite deserted. The production company that put on the show travels to various locations in Maryland. It took us almost an hour to arrive, but well worth the drive (we had charter buses, so comfort was key). I hope we get to see another show next year.

Upper class Students received a late night email on a Saturday that they had to move out then next day due to a problem. The students in apartments with kitchens and private bathrooms were being moved into deplorable conditions of a building that was closed last year for mold. The community co-ed bathroom has rat traps set everywhere and the shower stalls have rust on the soap dishes. The rooms smell terrible of mold and are very tiny.
