He's got two big yeti coolers on board for your drinks and food. You are guaranteed a good time. As soon as a reeled in my line, he had another one baited for me and my husband. We decided to book a fishing charter when we got down to Longboat Key. Pro Tip: Book before your…read moretrip (it's pretty rare you can snag a last minute reservation, especially during rainy season...i.e. summer, and during peak season in spring). Luckily when I texted Captain Justin Burger with Fishburger Charters, he had availability, so we opted to snag that reservation. We communicated over text and he was super responsive. We opted for a four hour fishing charter at 7am for six of us. That did mean someone in our party had to stay behind (which we knew going into it....coastguard rules are you can only have six people on that size vessel). I was upfront with him about the number of kids we had (3 total, and one being on the smaller size...age 4). That way he knew going into it that we may have a kiddo who loses interest quickly. He sent me the address of the boat ramp to meet, time and price. His price was fair. Based on the other captain we've worked with in the past, he was in line with him, and wasn't like the other captains I had called who were going to charge an extra $50 per person for each additional person (you get three in the fee for several I contacted, and then pay an extra $150 for an additional three people). He brings all the bait, rods, gases up the boat, you just bring ice if you plan on bringing your catch home with you and any food or snacks you want for the day. When we arrived at 6:50am, he was there with a smile on his face ready to go. You can tell Captain Justin does what he loves. He engaged all the kiddos and adults on the boat with his infectious energy and love of fishing. The pros of going so early in the morning is it's cooler out AND you get to see a pretty rad sunrise! We first tried our hand at fishing in the bay. Because of all the rain we've gotten in the afternoons, visibility wasn't great and the fish weren't hoppin. My kiddo managed to catch a catfish. Then he took us to another spot to try and catch some snook. My kiddo also caught a smaller snook. We stayed in that area for about 10 minutes, then he gave us the option of either going to Tampa Bay OR going into the gulf. He did warn us that the gulf may be a bit choppy, but since we were going that way, we opted to try our hand at the gulf. We went roughly 3 miles out and Captain Justin setup lines, one specifically for my kiddo to try and catch a barracuda. Less than three minutes there, my kiddo caught his prized barracuda (which we threw back). He wound up catching another one while we were there. While the gulf was choppier than normal, it was fine for most of us (minus two kids who didn't have their sea legs yet...). For the next two hours our group caught some grouper, trout, a flounder we gave to Captain Justin, because he said he'd cook it up for dinner for him and his wife, and a ginormous snook that had a shark's tooth in him. If you're looking for a captain who's safe, has passion for the sea and fishing, and was born and raised in Longboat and has been a licensed captain for over 25+ years, Captain Justin is the guy for you. Be warned, he gets booked months in advance during their high season, so contact him early to get on the books. He also does scuba charters and spear fishing charters. You're also sure to have an awesome time with him! He's great with the kids!
