My experience with this place wasn't ideal to say the least. Initially the owner Tom was helpful over the phone when I called in the morning. I was up front from the beginning that I had a short time frame to get some marmoleum. A bit later I called ahead to let them know I'd be coming in. His staff told me he'd be around all afternoon. When I went in to look at the product he wasn't around though he showed up after about an hour and told me it would take 2 days to get the product. The next day I called early in the morning to order the product. Tom wasn't around - again. I left a message with his staff to please let him know I needed to order the product. He wasn't around - again - called me back several hours later and told me in a very huffy way there was NO WAY he could get the product for me in a couple of days. Very disappointing and pretty much a waste of my time. I decided to go elsewhere. read more

After reading all the great reviews, I had to check out Straus Carpet Co. The person who spoke with me on the phone was Felix. Nothing personal to him or anything, but my feedback is that the customer service was just okay. I spoke with him on the phone in regards to the price range that I was willing to pay and for him to give me some carpet options. This was an incredible task for him and frustrating for me. Then I asked him if he could come to Walnut Creek to show me the carpet samples and to do the measurements. He came and did the measurement. When I asked him to show me some samples, again this was very complicated for him. He felt that he did not know where to start and what to show me. I think I can understand his dilemna and frustration, but I can tell you that I was becoming impatient myself since I just wanted him to sell me something. After he did the measurement, I asked him if he could follow me on the road and come back to my condo so my wife can see the samples. He did but he was so nervous about my son giving him a cold. So besides the awkwardness and quirkiness of this whole situation, Felix is very knowledgeable and did not try to sell me something for a higher price. He wanted me to buy something that I could afford and was of quality. After negotiating about the price, we finally came to an agreement. The carpets were ordered and installed on time. I was very satisfied with the installers for their skill, professionalism and customer service. I am tempted to rate this place three stars, but considering the fair price, decent customer service, and very knowledgeable Felix... I will rate this place four stars because (funny enough) I do like Felix and I want to buy an area rug from him. Would I recommend this place? Yes. read more

I've been driving by this place my whole life, and always admired their vibrant and awesome paintings outside. So now that I'm all growsed up, and in need of carpet for my first home, I finally made it in there. Before I went in though, I went to a couple of the big box stores and talked with them to get an idea of price and what I could expect. The service at Straus was SO MUCH BETTER - Rita talked to us about what we wanted, gave us suggestions on what fit that, and then gave us space to talk it out. When we did decide, setting up the measuring and installation was EASY. And I didn't have to pay anything for the measurement. The carpet was installed quickly and efficiently once it arrived. We were working on a tight timeline, too, and Rita respected that and got it all done on time! We were so happy, when we decided we also needed two large area rugs, we went back. The prices were cheaper than what we had seen at a lot of places (keeping prices down, so: box stores, Macy's Outlet Store, Crate and Barrel Outlet, etc), we got a 10% discount for buying more than one, and the selection was large. When we asked they were completely up front about all their rugs being machine made - so no child labor went into the making of their rugs. And if we got the rugs home and didn't like them, we absolutely could have returned them. They even offered to let us take them home for a day or two before actually buying them. It's been more than a month now of us living with carpet and rugs, and we LOVE them! read more

I was in search for simple, soft runner carpets to place next to our bed. I searched online, looked at different stores, and didn't see anything I liked. Most were about $50 per runner (2'x9'). A friend recommended this place, and I went there not knowing what to expect. The lady (forgot her name) came out to help and suggested I take a look at their "scrap" pile. Turns out, I got 2 runners for $25, and they're super soft! What a great deal!!! I was in and out in less than 30 minutes. So happy. Bonus: clean bathroom. read more

When we decided to replace all of our carpeting several friends said, "Go to Straus, they are local and will take very good care of you." This turned out to be excellent advice. Felix de la Cruz ensured every part of our experience was excellent, following through on every detail. He began by patiently educating us on a number of carpet options and the quality, durability, and ease of care of each. Felix ordered and delivered samples, measured and helped us with a two phase installation to accommodate our other contractors' work (and our sanity!). Felix worked the schedule perfectly. The installers were very hard working and experienced professionals and are employees of Straus. They carefully moved the furniture that was too heavy for us to move. To finish a few thresholds Felix returned after our final tile was installed, going "above and beyond" complete the job beautifully. Our new carpet is beautiful! This review is long overdue. I purchased and had carpet installed by Strauss over 6 months ago. They are simply the best, from the selection to the installation process. The staff was soooo helpful and oh so patient. They were helpful in explaining many things about carpet and helpful with suggestions. The installing team was superb. I wish all businesses these days operated like Strauss. I felt so good about my decision and did not question whether or not I had been ripped off. ( God, peace of mind is so important) They act like they care and treat you as an individual with whom they are really happy to do business. Great flooring store with full selection of products and very knowledgeable people. We had a manufacturing problem with the bamboo they installed for us. Steven of Straus said they would take care of us and they did. He got the bamboo replaced with a hardwood floor at no cost to us. He was great to deal with through out the entire process. We just had two bedrooms recarpeted by Straus and we're extremely pleased. Steve and Tom in the showroom were very helpful. We picked out a wool remnant that works wonderfully in our master bedroom -- and it was a deal! The guest bedroom got a nylon carpet that looks great and is just right for what we need. Carlos and Jose installed the carpet and were extremely efficient. They moved the furniture, removed the old carpet and installed the new carpet in about six hours. I thought it would have been a much longer job. As it was the disruption was minimal. Highly recommended. read more

Good prices and excellent service. Ask for Rita. She was wonderfuly patient as we floudered around trying to decide what to buy, and she knows carpet. I've taken one star off because we had a bit of trouble with one of the carpet installers; he left a ridge in the carpet and gouged the wood on the stair molding. The carpet was fixed, and the other installer was great. Tom also gave us free binding on our left-over pieces of carpet, which we appreciated and which took away the bad feeling we had over the installation problem. Straus Carpet treats customers right---which is what good service is all about! (I'd have given back that fifth star, but we still have large gouges in our stairwell wood that we're going to have to fix. While they said they'd reimburse for the damage, it is annoying that we have to make the effort to repair the damage the installer did). I'd go back to Straus, but our carpet is good enough that it will be awhile before we'll need to replace it. read more

A few months ago I purchased my first home in El Sobrante. The house is 60 years old, and I suspect the old carpet was about 26 years old -- terribly stained and smelling of moldy dogs... After a consult with the sales staff at the Straus warehouse just off 880, I felt very well informed from their knowledgeable no-pressure staff. I told them about how large my space was to be carpeted and told them my budget of under $2000. Based on that there were able to show me several samples of carpet and scheduled a free in-home estimate. The sales rep helping me, Vera, came to my house soon after to look it over. Due to the awkward shape of my living space it was a little more expensive than originally estimated on paper, but still within my budget and Vera was very good at explaining the difference. The installation crew showed up as scheduled and did a beautiful job of installing my new carpet! We moved in the next day and noticed a very small ruffle across the large room carpet. I suspected this was from the roll not having settled in yet. I called Vera and she confirmed this was likely the case, and urged me to call back if it wasn't gone within a few days as all of their installations have a full warranty for material and labor and they would gladly come fix it if needed at no charge. The carpet settled in very nicely within a couple days and I'm still completely satisfied four months later. Thank you Straus Carpet! read more

This place is pretty cool if you're looking for either area rugs or small room carpeting. The place is a big warehouse and feels kind of empty when you first walk it. Soon you'll find that the service is quite good and the prices are very reasonable. They sell carpet remnants by the roll and will deliver for relatively cheap. WAY better than buying carpet at Home Depot or some place like that. read more

Upon hearing what I had in mind, Tom Straus helped me pick out the carpet and pad and we completed the transaction in less than 30 minutes. The showroom was large with an extensive amount of carpets to choose from. Their staff was friendly and knowledgeable. We worked with Vera who recommended a quality carpet at a reasonable price. Vera came to our home, measured and scheduled installation. Installer showed up on time and did a great job with the installation. We had a problem with one of the carpets and we contacted Vera. She came to our home, my wife selected a different carpet and the re-installation was completed a few days later. Zero issues or pushback from Straus on replacing the carpet. Today I went out looking for a carpet remnant to fit in the back of my truck. I yelp'd and found Straus Carpets, and that someone had mentioned they have remnants. I have to say that I am very pleased with their business. Every person there had a smile on their face, and was very good natured. My sales person was Steven Graff. He helped to measure my truck space, and showed me what my options were. He asked me questions about what I would be putting in the back of my truck after it was carpeted, and made appropriate suggestions for my usage. The shorter pile keeps the dirt on top and is easier to sweep out, instead of needing a vacuum. He was patient, and friendly. I didn't feel any pressure, and he didn't act as though he were going to try to sell me anything else. All in all, I was quite pleased, and am perfectly confident in giving 5 starts! They even folded up the carpet so it would all fit inside (it was raining out), and loaded it for me. I feel my money is well spent giving it to this business. read more

I have been to this business before today, more then once, and previously would have given them 5 stars. After my experience with them today, I will never go back. I went in to buy a remnant for a new art studio. I told the saleswoman the size I needed. She showed me what I assumed were all the possibilities. She took me to 2 places, one in the show room and one in the back area. Though the one I picked was ok, I was not thrilled with it, my choice though. So, I paid for the piece and while the guy was cutting it, I wandered around looking at other carpets, just to pass the time. Just as he was finished cutting the piece, I see another piece in an area I was not shown. There was a piece there that was beautiful, the same price and almost exactly the right size. I was upset that I was not shown this area and told there were other possibilities. I went and spoke to the saleswoman and told her I found piece I very much preferred and she said it was too late, they had cut the remnant I had chosen. I said I choose it thinking it was my only choice. I asked why she had not shown me this area of the store. She said she didn't know there was anything in that area that would be right for what I wanted. I feel like she works there, she should know her own inventory. So, it was a mistake. I asked that they let me change my purchase, since the other piece was something I really loved. She went and spoke to her boss ( the owner ) and came back and said, I could have my money back, but they would not sell me the other piece. So I went to talk to the owner, as I didn't understand. He said I was being unreasonable and I could have my money back, but then he didn't want to do business with me. He said I have been there before ( so he recognized me ) and that I know I could have walked around and looked myself. That doesn't make sense to me. Does he think that since I have been there before, I know the store inventory and what is where? Isn't that supposed to be the responsibility of the business to know what they have a show you all options? Now, I hear that he didn't agree with me. There were lots of other choices about how to deal with a customer who is unhappy. He could have asked that I pay more so we both took some responsibility for the misunderstanding. He could have apologized and asked what I thought a fair compromise might be. Etc... Basically, they both could have shown some customer service. I was treated really shabbily and I will never go back there. So, as long as you don't have any misunderstanding with them, all will be fine. Good Luck! read more

On the strength of Straus' five star review on Yelp, I didn't bother with any other carpet vendors, and I wasn't sorry. Steve was extraordinarily helpful in explaining the qualities of the different materials to me as well as ordering samples to be sent to me so that I could compare them at home. I couldn't decide between two of them, and when Steve came to measure the room and give me a price, I asked him which of the two he would choose. His choice was the less expensive of the two, and his reasons were sound. I thought that was impressive. The installers did an excellent job in every respect, they were competent, fast and neat. The carpet was installed in May; I have waited to post this review to see how the carpet and I got along over a couple months time -- I am very happy to report that the carpet looks and feels great. I would very definitely recommend Straus Carpet and would buy from them again. read more
