They talked to us very patiently, and in excruciating detail about carpet construction and that helped us buy a very nice carpet that will last 20+ years. The installation went well, with only minor damage to the ceiling (which Straus credited us for the repair) when a closet door was not so gently removed. The new carpet looks great! read more

We've used Straus multiple times over the years and have always been impressed. Most recently they put new flooring in our kitchen and stairway. They arrived on schedule, did a beautiful job and left the place absolutely spotless. They discovered our floor was not level and used a leveling compound to address the problem before laying the floor. After a day or two we noticed one of the stairs was squeaking and they came out promptly and fixed the problem -- no charge. Straus is located in Oakland and provides sales and service in SF. I found out about them while looking at a review of another carpet company on Yelp. Liz, the sales rep, is fun to work with, stopped by with samples, and kept in contact throughout the sales cycle. The work seems to have been done perfectly, the carpet is beautiful plus comfortable to walk on, and though the install was only for one room matches surprisingly well with older wall-to-wall in the hallway and the rest of the apartment. Additionally, the installers repaired a patch in another room with carpet i had from the previous install - per my request and for a small added labor fee. And as a surprise little bonus replaced a metal strip from the hallway to the kitchen that badly needed it - much appreciated - no more scrapes and cuts walking in there with bare feet. The carpet is a good match to the other carpet in the apartment, is thicker and softer to walk on, and appears to be of a better quality. And Liz, the sales and customer contact, kindly did not to try to upsell me on replacement for the whole apartment. Liz did answer all my questions between first visit and installation, plus adjusted the estimate/invoice to include the extra patch repair when I asked her to do so. Payment typically by credit card but they also accept checks. Why one star off? There were some communication glitches during sales and installation. If I could I would give 4.32758185 stars. During the sales cycle there were questions i had to ask Liz more than once to get responses. The replies were helpful once i got them, i just seemed to have to work a little extra to not lose track of my own questions along the way. On scheduling, the installation was set for 9:30 a.m. but the installers showed up at 8:30 a.m. Early is better than late, but maybe give a range so i'm not out and about when they show up, so the installers don't have to wait or come back and i don't miss them when they arrive. On the plus I was told the job would take 2 hours or less, and they did get the job done in 1-1/2 hours - that part of the scheduling information matched exactly. Also the installers started tacking in the carpet before i had the chance to see the pad. I did get in there in time to peel back one corner to see the new pad, just would have preferred seeing all the pad on the floor the moment that part was completed. I also would have preferred that the installer had been proactive in going over with me the 18" x 24" patch on the order, to make sure he knew exactly where that was and didn't forget to do it. After I did remind him and show him the spot, the work was almost seamless alongside the rest of the room. When the job was done and Carlos, the lead installer, got it that i had wanted him to go over everything with me after all, he showed me all the old pad, the new pad and the old carpet, and he offered me the extra new carpet left over from the job. At that point everything was clear. Carlos had second-guessed when he arrived that i didn't want to see the steps along the way, because i didn't hover while they were working and I didn't barge in when they were working during a stretch they needed to have the door closed. What I think he actually saw was that i had gotten thrown off a little when they arrived an hour early. Maybe they could have asked if i wanted to have them go over stuff with me first or just do it. Sometimes you can tell where a customer's head is at without asking, but in general it's probably better to make sure. Overall I am happy with the job, and pleased to support a family owned business. I do recommend Straus Carpet and would hire them again without a doubt. read more

We got three estimates to do a fairly large office carpet replacement in two phases and Straus was very competitive. Patient and caring Alex Trujillo came to bid our job in August. He showed how thorough and organized he was by mapping out and labeling the building, then listening and confirming what we needed. The estimate was timely, even though he was getting married a couple of days later, and he answered queries quickly. While we pursued the other two options, it was clear which company stood head and shoulders above the others. Office move-outs are tough and Straus brought in a huge crew and completed the first phase in two hours, starting at 4 pm on a Friday. By six the first office was put together and operational once more. The work was skilled and the crew genial, clearly all got along well. Phase two was another Friday night, and the results we just as good. Alex came back to do a little touch-up two weeks later. Great follow up! He brought three long and beautifully finished runners cut from our carpet material for the warehouse entry points. These were done at no charge. We couldn't be happier with our beautiful new carpet and plan to have them replace the WC floor in November. My husband and I are in the process of remodeling our kitchen. We live in Alameda and pass Straus Carpet every time we leave the island, the cheery painted signs always catch my eye and brighten my days. We first went into Straus carpet looking for a rug for our oddly shaped living room. Tom Straus greeted us and helped us create a custom rug for the room. The rug turned out beautiful and was reasonably priced. While we were shopping for the rug we found that Straus not only sells rugs but all flooring. We were excited to find that he was a retailer for the type of flooring we were looking for, for our kitchen Marmoleum! Working with Tom and his installation team was wonderful (we've had to work with a lot of contractors over the last few months). They were honest, professional, punctual, flexible and did great work! It's true what they say--they will let you bring two rugs home and decide later which one you keep before they charge you. Pretty awesome. I'm so glad we took them up on this offer because we ended up going with the one we were more iffy about b/c it worked so much better in the space. The two salespeople were super friendly, and a little funny. The selection is pretty nice, and the quality is definitely there. We paid about $190 or so for our 5x8 rug, which is a little higher than you're going to find at overstock or other big online stores. But, they're local, and I like them, and you never totally know what you're getting in terms of quality/color/etc. when you order online. I will come back here when I'm ready to finish area rugging the rest of my house. read more

We are so happy we went here. Tom the owner took such good care of us from the second we walked in the door. We had about a week to get carpets in, delivered and installed and he made sure that is was on time and up to our satisfaction, even on our limited budget! Tom came to our condo himself to take measurements on a Saturday morning and also took a look at the existing carpet paid. He saved us about $500 by using the existing pad which was in good shape whereas somewhere like Home Depot would have just tacked it on to make the sale better. On another note, most of his employees have worked for him for 10+ years and are equally great people. We had the added benefit of joining in on birthday cake when we were at the store!! Honestly, go to this place. Great customer service - it was a pleasure to do business here and the prices were very reasonable. Our carpet looks and feels great! read more

Let me first say, that up until a few weeks ago I would have given this place 5 stars. Every time we went to the showroom we were greeted with a friendly staff. Tom even would approach us nicely and was very helpful. Unfortunately, my experience yesterday and today has really changed my experience and I am disappointed. I was trying to get some help buying from their remnant rugs. Tom helped me over the phone and I asked if they had any solid grey color rugs. He sent me pictures, which I appreciated. I told him I was in a rush to get this done and needed it within a few days. Luckily I phoned on Wednesday and the binder was not in until Thursday. He stated that we would have to finalize our selections that afternoon (Wednesday) or Thursday morning at the latest. I then emailed him that I would let him know Thursday morning, first thing at 8 a.m. because I wanted my husband to see what measurements I selected and to be on the same page as me. I also sent him the name of the rug I liked. The name I used was the name of the rug in the picture (one of their labels with price). No other rug had a label with name. Tom responded to my email asking me for a picture of the rug I liked. Since he never stated a deadline, I assumed sending it on Thursday at 8 am would be fine. He didn't object to the time I stated in my previous email and given that he said things needed to be finalized by Thursday morning at the latest, it all seemed to be fine. I call on Thursday morning and speak to Tom. I ask a few questions about commercial rugs vs. the rugs he sent over int he email and then once I settled on the rug, asked him for his expertise to help me figure out size. He was pretty rude when saying, "NO." I was a bit put off by his tone. It actually made me feel really uncomfortable. I will say I understood his reasoning - he didn't want to be responsible if the size turned out to be something I didn't like. However, I told Tom I understood that, had no problem making the final decision, and taking full responsibility for my selection but what I was looking for was his expertise since he is in the rug business. For example, how much of a wood trim is usually left or do people in the industry suggest? What happens if you have a door or furniture, do you give an allowance to those measurements so they don't interfere with the door etc? Perhaps some of you are reading this and know the answers. For me, I didn't so wanted to just pick his brain. From there, I could have easily measured the area and made a final call. When buying furniture, it is not uncommon for a salesperson to help you think about where to place it to make sure dimensions fit. Same thing with window treatments etc. In fact, when we bought our previous rug from Tom's store (not a remnant), the salesperson did exactly what Tom said he wouldn't today. The previous salesperson listened to us when we told him the size of our room, what we were thinking about etc. It was actually that level of service that convinced us to take the rug home and try it out. Without that, we wouldn't have even done that. Anyway, I was not going to hold Tom responsible if the size wasn't what we liked. All I was looking for was helpful hints/suggestions so I could make the right decision. Tom was pretty firm he would not help. The next issue was that Tom told me the rug could be bound on Thursday but when I phoned he told me to take my time to figure it out because the rug wouldn't be bound until next week. I asked him if I decided within 20 minutes if he could still get it done on Thursday. He said no. He said the binder was already there and working. If he knew I was in a hurry for the rug and knew I would be calling him at 8 am as I said in my email, why would he not communicate he needed a final decision earlier to ensure my rug would be worked on. Pretty disappointing. Overall, my experience is you get better and friendlier service when you visit the showroom. Also, I think they are nicer when you go and buy rugs that are not from their remnant section. Perhaps, the remnants are cheaper so maybe asking questions is annoying to them or maybe the price point is lower that they feel it warrants second class citizen service. I don't know. All I know is I had a much better experience when I visited the actual showroom. All in all, I loved this place and am just feeling disappointed now. I would have gone there for all my carpet needs, which I have done since I found out about them. Even if I didn't find what I was looking for, I would always check there first. Not sure I will anymore and not sure I will refer anymore. Even though I wanted a remnant rug today, I may have wanted a more expensive rug in a month. Also, when we moved maybe we would've used them for a full floor. Repeat business, especially with people who have a good 30-40 years of home buying in front of them seems like it could pay off. Guess they don't see it that way. Disappointing. read more

Liz came by, measured the basement family rooms, and ordered the carpet. When the installers came, they were able to do a beautiful job within 4 hours with no hassles. The installers were consummate professionals focused on getting the job done properly. Strauss Family Carpet was a far more refreshingly positive experience compared to the constant negativity and problem-focused Empire Today, who took three weeks to produce zero results. Well, they say that TRULY GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE reveals itself when something goes wrong post purchase: In this case, something must have gone wrong in the manufacturing process of our chosen carpet (carpet brand: Camelot http://www.camelotcarpetmills.com/) and three months post installation and subsequent cleaning, the chosen rug has continued to look soiled with each step we take on it -literally dark runways returned post cleaning within 6 weeks!!! Now, here is where Tom Straus and his team at Straus Carpets in Oakland won our highest accolades once again: Tom isn't just paying lip service to "I want you as a customer to be happy with your purchase" -he actually means it. He and his team never left us hanging but proactively supported our quest for a resolution. Net sum: We are ripping out all of the carpet (after 6 months of installation!) From this layman's perspective: The Camelot carpet is flawed (and there is nothing that a Tom Straus can do here as he is just a dealer outlet) and we ended up forgoing carpet altogether in our front rooms opting for wood! We picked a different brand of carpet for our bedrooms. Kudos to Tom and his team for KEEPING this customer happy and returning. read more

So my girlfriend and I needed two rugs of the same color in a specific size for our bedroom. Decided to check out Straus on Sunday since we always drive by it. As soon as we walked Liz pleasantly greeted us and was very attentive. She listened to what we needed and began giving us options. She let us browse around the store and assured us if we had any questions she'd be more than happy to help. We finally made our way into the remnant warehouse and that's where we found the perfect piece that we were looking for. We let Liz know this was the one and she immediately set it aside for us. We talked pricing and what they offered was better than any other place we had been to. I let her know I would be back the next day with the exact measurements we needed and payment to finalize the transaction. I went back the next day with my notes, and again was greeted by Liz who helped me right away. Made the final decision on what we were getting and that was it. She let me know the rugs would be ready by Thursday and off i went. Fast forward to Thursday, I call to make sure everything is ready and as promised it was. Head to Straus and this time I'm greeted by a gentleman, who's name I didn't catch, that was happy to help me. Quickly shows me to my two new rugs and helps me take them to the car, I didn't even have to ask. Overall I am one happy customer, everyone I met went out of their way to help me out. We purchased about 800 square feet of beautiful Shaw Platinum Texture Tonal Carpet and we love it! Tom dealt with us directly, we got to know him, his awesome cat Ray and my kids enjoyed the M&M machine. Our carpet is beautifully installed and a mistake our contractors made post install is going to be rectified by Straus. And, their prices were fair for an amazing product. Side note: we were looking at more expensive carpet (which we didn't need) and Tom was great about saying how that wasn't the right thing for us given our needs. Love, love, love this place. After reading my review on Yelp, Tom contacted me and offered me to choose another carpet and he would reinstall gratis. We accepted and chose to have the carpet installed wall to wall to ensure there would not be an issue with the attachment to the stairs. The customer service here is pretty darn amazing. I bought a remnant carpet including installation 2 years ago. I recently realized that there was a spot under my closet that wasn't replaced. I still had the leftover carpet so I went to ask if they would send someone back to fix it. I expected to get a significant push back from them but as soon as they found my receipt and knew that I still had the leftover carpet the readily agreed to fix it. SERVICE - SERVICE - SERVICE! I believe that my former landlord purchased my apartment unit's carpet from Straus. It's been over 10 years. I discovered perfect circles of wet carpet and my property manager's handyman said that the area was not wet. The property manager said that if my carpet was wet I either had intentionally done it or my dog had and they were not going to do anything about it. The handyman said that they didn't have a moisture reader, but that carpet companies did. I called Strauss Carpet in the afternoon on 1/20/17 and was referred to the owner, Tom Strauss. Tom was empathetic to my situation. He stated that the type of moisture reader I needed was not something he used, but agreed to come over to my apartment and give me his assessment that same evening after work at no charge. What a great guy! He arrived and we moved some furniture and he stated that the rings of wet carpet were not something he could comment on, other than they were not urine. We both had a good laugh about animal stains, in that they are not circular. He discovered that the carpet and pad was damp on the west wall with old water stains and that the tacks from the wooden strip were rusty, which would indicate water intrusion. Tom even wrote me a letter to provide to my property manager, again, at no charge. Who wouldn't want to do business with a company that goes out of their way to make certain that even their former customer's (once removed) were satisfied? Thank you Tom Straus and your staff. If I am need of carpet and am in the area, I will always purchase from you, but will always definitely recommend Strauss to my friends. read more

We had spoken with Felix on the phone who was very positive and seemed to understand our need for a quick carpet install. He made several calls on our behalf and located what we needed. We were not concerned about price, just needed the carpet fast. Unfortunately Felix does not work on Friday's and asked another young fellow if he could possibly come to our office on Friday for a walk through/Measure. The guy freaked out, started tugging at his pants and shaking his legs like a cartoon. Was yelling at Felix about a 140 sq foot install that was more important. ( our place is 1600 sq feet) We could not get out of there fast enough. Aside from Felix it's a freak show at Straus Carpets. Also note there is very limited parking and the location is Alameda adjacent not Oakland. read more

The Board of Directors running the HOA was immediately impressed by Tom's (the owner) professionalism, and especially by his caring attitude. He basically turned down thousands of dollars of extra profit by recommending us a smaller intervention to what we initially considered. Integrity and professionalism always pay back! Straus Carpet finished a complicated job in only two full working days, minimizing inconvenience for the local homeowners and leaving the work site spotless after they finished the installation. Like the other reviewers, I had an excellent experience at Strauss . I worked with Rita who was very helpful and knowledgeable about the different types of carpet available and about installation. They worked with me to get it installed within one day (!) on a Saturday morning and the installers did a nice job . I was also very fortunate to find a well-priced piece of natural fiber wool carpeting, which I prefer because it will not emit VOC's and will biodegrade at the end of its life, that was very soft and cozy. I did my research before buying this carpet and found Straus very competitively priced and well reviewed, and I am very happy with their service. read more

I measured my floor on a Saturday morning, took a pic of my living room setup, walked in the door at Straus, showed it to the lady, was directed to the area rugs that fit my floor, pointed one out, took it home on a trial (they didn't charge my card yet) and took it home. I recently had my upstairs and stairs newly carpeted and I couldn't have been happier working with Straus. Felix was incredibly helpful and patient. He brought by samples or had them mailed to us until we had the carpet and color we were happiest with. Despite some issues where we had to wait a few months, we never felt pressured. Felix helped us to determine how to best save money by seam placement. I liked working with Felix so much I didn't even get a second quote, the entire experience was positive and the final result is fantastic. I'd seen on Yelp that Straus had a good selection of remnants. I needed something cheap and the right dimensions to fill, after a few cuts, several awkward spaces. We were treated with courtesy, attention, politeness and warmth for our entire time at Straus, as if we were there for a $2000 order. Chairs were pulled up, dimensions were calculated, carpet types were explained and considered. All for a small remnant! It was amazing, personal and kind customer service. Three stars for the carpet install. The men damaged most of our baseboard when tearing up our old carpet. They also managed to tear a hole in our bathroom mat. ??? They moved things on their own when they could have asked my husband to move them. Bad experience overall. What a buzzkill to come home to beautiful new carpet, but loads more work for us to repaint almost every stretch of baseboard. It would have been two stars, but I really liked the staff at the company. Liz was very helpful, nice, funny, and made our selection process much, much easier. She even let us take home a sample book for a few days! I just wish they hired installers that were aware that they were in someone's home and were more careful. ***Update*** We did contact Liz to report the damage and she has really followed up with us. We plan to fix the baseboards ourselves because we have the paint and tools already. Liz offered to compensate us with a gift card to a restaurant we like. This is nice because it's hard to put a price on the repairs when we do it ourselves, but it's nice to be rewarded for our time. Straus gets four stars because they really do take responsibility for their installers which is great and have excellent customer serivce. read more
