Robin: "Holy Mackrel Mac-Man, there's a young lady in distress!" Mac-Man: "Have no fear Robin, Mac-Man is on his way." [Cut to Mac-Man consoling a young lady on a bench at the local Library.] Mac-Man: "... so what you're saying is you're Mac laptop isn't working and you don't know what to do." Distressed lady: "Yes. If only there were someone who could fix my laptop on-site and perhaps offer some kind of training program where I could learn how to put right such problems in future." Robin: [Turns to Mac-man dramatically] "Sizzling circuits Mack-Man, looks like she's in luck." Mac-Man: "That's right Robin. With my expansive knowledge of Apple technology I offer a range of services, from home visits, where I'll try to fix you're Mac on-site, to training courses ranging from basic operations to advanced technical issues." Distressed lady: "Wow. That's perfect." Robin: [Interrupts] "...say no more pretty lady..." Mac-Man: "...let's just call it Mac justice!" [Cut to credits: nunah nunah nunah nunah Mac-Man!]
God bless The Mac Man!…read more When my Powerbook died last week, The Mac Man came to my rescue and saved it. They picked it up, took it home to Worthing with them, digged around inside and declared it needed more RAM and the system re-installing. They brought back it a few days later and it now runs like clockwork. The icing on the cake, is the fact they talked me through all the options without baffling me with technical descriptions. Oh and they also did all this for a bargain price. Like I said, God bless The Mac Man! As well as repairs and installation, they offer Mac training and support across Sussex and Dorset and lots of tips and problem solving solutions.
Starnet Internet
I've always hated internet cafes, and Starnet Internet exemplifies everything I dislike about them:…read morethe service is diabolical, the look dingy and dirty, and everything is overpriced. Add to that that this particular internet cafe has infected 3 different friends' computers with viruses, and you can see why my recommendation here is: stay well away. Internet cafes seem to have popped up all over Brighton, and they are all really one of a kind: dirty, dingy and ludicrously expensive. I cannot understand a good reason to go: when an hour on one of these computers costs you over £1, surely getting an internet connection in your house will be much, much cheaper over time. What on earth is the point? In Starnet's case, the above price is compounded with a really poor service. The computers are from the early 90s, about as slow as it gets and riddled with viruses, worms and that sort of thing. I wasn't exaggerating above: 3 different friends, on separate occasions and different computers, got 3 different viruses. If you do desperately need to go to an internet cafe, why go to the one where you'll definitely pick something up that you don't want to transfer onto your own device. Starnet also offers various mobile phone gizmos (who buys those?) and extortionately priced scanning, printing and faxing: service I have never tried, and certainly never plan to. Scanning simply does not cost £1 per page, that's just ludicrous. I wish there was a lower star rating than 1 to give, as Starnet exemplifies everything you wouldn't want in a business. This is the worst internet cafe I've ever been in, and possibly the worst business in Brighton. Cross the road to avoid.
This place is a handy little resource, situated half way up St James' Street. It's pretty dingy and…read morethe computers look very '90s, but it's very useful if you've got work to do and your pc crashes on you, or if you've just moved to the area and haven't got internet up and running yet. Prices are pretty standard - from 50p for half an hour. They provide other resources too like phone unlocking, repairs, printing, scanning, sim cards, faxing... It can look a bit dodgy though, with loads of different phone and pc accesories higglety-pigglety under the counter, for pretty cheap prices. One thing to beware of too - scanning is a rip off at £1 per page! And if you don't have a memory card they'll make you pay an additional 50p to email elswhere, plus more for printing if you need that - it's a bit of a bummer as I've found nowhere else nearby that does scanning.

Diamond are, indeed, diamonds. For a self employed student,…read morecomputing facilities are vital, but money to deal with problems is short. When my laptop got the dreaded 'blue screen of death', they tried their very best to revive it, sadly to no avail. However, if they had, the £120 it would have cost me would have been half the price of a new machine, and of course, I would have saved all my files. Thankfully, I managed to inherit a friend's old machine, but was nearly foiled again when the power cable died. I looked in horror at various chainstore websites, selling replacements for around £80 - then I remembered Diamond, who sold me a universal charger for under £30.

I'm a little bit of a geek with computers, and quite often have my friends bring problems to me which I'm all too happy to fix. I even built the PC I'm typing on now! But when a soldering iron is needed, that's when I'd get in touch with Diamond. Aside from what I'd consider an overpriced fee for reinstalling windows (£49 for 20 odd minutes work?) the prices seem pretty reasonable, with laptop repair beginning at £25. And if you aren't tech savvy, but don't want to shell out for a new computer, Diamond can give advice and lend a hand with selecting and installing components for you! If you have a computer savvy friend you feel you can trust with your laptop/ desktop its probably worth asking them first, but for a professional service, Diamond are there if you need 'em.

He was able to sort me out with cable at a fair price and I had a little chat with him about geeky computer stuff in general. He was knowledgeable about his trade and a pretty friendly guy. Aaanyway, he said it's be £100 for him to back up my files and reinstall windows. I'm not even sure it's not a hardware fault, but hopefully this'll fix it. It seems a little steep, and if I wasn't desperate I prob could've got a friend to do those things... but ah well! The guy was friendly though, he does the repairs himself so there's no sending it off and a long wait (he said it'd be done by tomorrow), and I like the suggestion of authenticity by his crazily cluttered IT geek office! Will keep you updated on actual repair... Note: the above opening times are the official ones but then he told me Monday is his day off... on the plus if you're busy he'll come to your's to diagnose the problem and pick the computer up most days.

I trawled message boards, emailed and called Apple for support, but the problem was physical and therefore needed to be seen by an expert. I was fortunate enough to have the Apple Care Protection Plan, which meant my computer was covered for free repair. The Authorised Apple Service Provider was Robert Harding Computers in Hove. At the time I found it both difficult to locate the repair shop (just at the bottom of Sackville Road: it's not that hard really) and to part with my beloved Mac. I reluctantly left my baby in the hands of Mr Harding himself, a charming chat, whose initial diagnosis made me feel confident he knew what he was talking about.
